This was the best record a freshman football team ever had! They were first in the league. The freshman struggled through daily 2V2 hour practices con- sisting of agility drills, offensive and defensive scrimmages. Practice al- ways ended with conditioning exer- cises. The offense was led by Quarter- back Julian Armaro. The offensive line helped block for the successful running backs Ronnie Gomez, Mike Carley, Peter Bustemante, Rollian Strokes, and Leon Bryant. This team had many strengths, but its strongest point was the defenisve tackling of the M.V.P's, Roman Ramierez, Joe Cowan, and Jeff Sleeper. Julian had 726 yards total passing. The leading back was Ronnie Gomez with 56 car- ries and 363 yards. The leading Re- ceiver was Jeff Sleeper who had 15 catches for a total of 410 yards. The total team rushing per game was 128 yards and the total passing was 90 yards. Despite the experienced coaching of hard working Head Coach Cur- tis Flannigan and student Coach Mike Bartly of the Junior Varsity team had a disappointing season. Sophomore players felt that there was a lack of individual as well as team- work effort. The 2V2 hour daily prac- tices consisted of the regular condi- tioning, scrimmages, and specialty teams for punting, kickoff, kick-re- turn. Sophomore Center Ben Jesmer, and Bruce Hunker CQBJ attempted to psyche players up for the remaining plays during the weaker moments. The team finished the season with a 2 win and 6 loss record. Cross Country Moves Boys cross country had a difficult sea- son because of the shortage of exper- ienced runners, but they were able to take 9th in the Divisionals out of 14 teams. They defeated Pueblo, Tucson High, Salpointe, Catalina, and Buena. They could have beaten Rincon and Santa Rita if it were not for injuries and illnesses. This was a rebuilding year with a lot of new runners at the start of the season. Sahuaro won State Champion- ship in the playoffs. The toughest run- ners to compete against were SunnySide, Palo Verde and Sahuaro. Coach Dick Browning, 14 year vet- eran stated that his runners learned a lot, improved, and developed their skills. The team met everyday after school since Aug. 20th. The team Worked con- cession stands at the football games and had an annual Candy Sale to raise funds. Basically, all the runners are returning next year. This year the experienced runners were: CSeniorsJ Julio Freire and Shawn Nothestein, CJuniorJ Manny Freire, and fSophomoreJ Carlos Nava. Other team members were Hector Soto, Albert Avila, David Dahlen, Brad McKenzie and Robert Peterson. By Letty Reyes The Girls cross country team, coached by Ms. Yvonne Clay, had a successful season. Although faced with many inex- perienced runners and basic rebuilding problems, the squad showed a willing- ness to work hard. The team practiced from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, con- ditioning their bodies to take on the grueling tasks that lay before them. The team consisted of competitors. The only senior that participated in cross country was Dawn Wells. The juniors were Moni- ca Valdez, Patricia Beaty, and Connie Childs. The sophomores were Bonnie Conners and Delma Gronodo. The fresh- men were Maria Valdez and Renee Se- gura.
