Top Right: Mr. Dale Bru- baker. Mr. Dale Brubaker, the Orchestra teacher for 32 years, teaches 1 class of 15 students in the String Orchestra. He plays the viola and also enjoys playing the violin and performs in the Tucson Symphony. In addition, he has studied the cello, bass, and piano, Mr. Brubaker also teaches 1 class daily at Pistor Jr. High and 2 hours weekly at the elemen- tary schools of Miller, Lawrence, Warren and White. The junior high students performed with Cholla in some of the string programs. He stated, There are a number of promising students, but Vickie Espino is the concertmasterf' Students especially enjoyed playing mu- sic from the Baroque period and we per- formed a variety of classical and popular music. The orchestra has taken part in the Mountain States Festival at Arizona State University in Tempe for the past 5 years. Last year they received the rating of Excellent At the time of the inter- view the orchestra was working hard on the Concerto Grosso of Vivaldi and has eight performances planned. Jazz Band The Jazz Band, instructed by Mr. Neil Fishler, upheld their high level of excellence by giving many fine perfor- mances. Highlights included the trip to the Northern Arizona University Jazz Festival in February, and in March the All City Jazz Festival held at Reid Park and hosted by the Cholla Band Boosters. They also performed at the Pima County Fair in April and again in January with Catalina and Sunnyside High Schools. Some of the songs performed Wereg Strike Up the Band, Sweet Geor- gia Brown and Days of Wine and Roses. 142 Chollaires Awarded Superior The special performances by the Chollaires included Christmas con- certs at San Xavier Mission, Tucson Mall, and Levy's at the Foothills Mall. The Fall Potluck and concert was held in the Cholla Cafeteria. The Chol- laires also participated in Spring musicals and two showcase perfor- mances in May. Lisa Carriere and Tony Golden received Superior rat- ings on their Solofensernble contest at the University of Arizona in January. In the same contest the Chollaires also were awarded Superior Ratings. There were 9 returning Chollaires this year, and 10 expected for next year who were Denise Armenta, Veronica Esquibel, Tim Garcia, Carolyn Haucke, J ona Hodlicka, Alex McKen- na, James Ouellette, Tony Palma, Glen Parks, and Ramses Stevens. The parents involved in the Booster Club were President - Vola Carriere, Sec.!Treas. - Jane Aycottg Bill and Shelly Armstrong, Keiko Brown and Mrs. Ouellette.
