Language peaks The English Department, headed by Carl Johannesson, maintained its goal to instruct students in the areas of foreign and English language. Skills and writing emphasis classes were added this year along with several more French classes and additional Spanish, Latin, and German classes. The department of- fered GATE ffreshman and sophomore levelj, English as a Second Language, Bi- lingual English, Reading Improvements, Business English, Writers Workshop, Beginning and Advanced Journalism, Modern Rhetoric and Senior Survey. The two new teachers who joined the de- partment were Mrs. Julia Jorgensen and Mrs. Debra Rodieck. New teacher Mrs. Julia Jorgenson has a greater chance to focus on the liter- acy problem and to do something about it because she is an English Teacher. Mrs. Jorgensen teaches English because she believes there is freedom in a literate society and help students achieve it. She also taught at Sunnyside, C.D.O., Alter- native school, and Tucson High, and be- lieves teaching is important work. Her hobbies and interests were theater dance, scuba diving, and reading. She stated, I find a lot of good feeling here . . . It is a good place to learn and a good place to work. 1 Wave Lengths Mrs. Debra Rodieck always taught because it is a part of her per- sonality. Mrs. Rodieck loves her work. She teaches advanced English, and chose this subject because that's what she does best. Mrs. Rodieck wants to implement a peer teaching program in her writing emphasis classes which she fomulated while participating in the Southern Arizona Writing Pro- ject. Mrs. Rodieck hopes that some- day she can be published. Her hobbies and interests are writing, playing pi- ano, singing, going to church, and tak- ing long nature walks.
