Their being selected was based on scholarship, leadership, and academics. Throughout the year, the club had monthly fundraisers and com- munity services. These included donat- ing a turkey to a retirement home, and during Christmas they donated Christ- mas bags with candy, fruit, etc. to an orphanage. This year's officers were: President - Steve Warrior fSeniorJ Vice-President - Barbara Garmen CSeniorJ, Secretary - Lorraine Fisher fSeniorJ, Treasurer - Richie Sander- ville. The advisor was Mr. Len Bryan. Students Against Driving Drunk was a new group whose goal was to help pre- vent alcohol related accidents. The offi- cers included Tiffanie Cahill CSeniorJ, Vice-President - Steve Anreacola CSophomoreJ, Treasurer - Joanne Corral fSeniorJ, and Secretary - Robin Runge CSeniorJ. The 15-member club wanted to make people aware of the hazards involved in driving drunk. Statistics showed that over 21 deaths occur daily from driving while intoxicated and that a high per- centage of deaths were people between the ages of 16 and 24. S.A.D.D. members did not condem drinking but the act of driving drunk. The students recom- mended that a parent-child contract be discussed in families which would en- courage teenagers to call their parents for a ride home from parties when one or more of their friends had been drinking heavily. Prosecution vs. Defense Mock Trial representative was Mr. Towne Bishop. There were four tri- als which took place April 13, 1985 at the Tucson City Court. The twelve ac- tive members were fSeniorsJ Jeff Bishop, Martha Valdivia, Brad McKenzie, Margie Walker, Crystal Cooper, Mike Archuleta, CJuniorsJ Chris McBride, Lamont Nesbitt, CSophomoresJ Peter Lippert, Tyrone Vincent, J.B. McElfresh and CFresh- menl Kim Apel. The same criminal case was tried repeatedly. All students played four roles. Each student got to know all four Witnesses so he could play each Witness and develop skills as the attorney for the prosecution and defense. The German Club Cornpetes The German Club's main goals in- cluded sending a student to Germany, and entering in hopes of winning the Southern Arizona Language Fair. Students explored the German Club through guest speakers, projects, car- oling at Winter Haven and a nursing home. Field trips were to Sahuaro High School for the meeting of the Arizona Association of Students of Germany fA.A.S.G.D and special high- lights included the Arizona Foreign Language Competition. Mrs. Carla North sponsoredtheGerman Clubfor the second year at Cholla. Fun- draisers this year included the sale of advent calendars, cookies and Gummi-Bear candies. The club met on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. in room B- 8. The German Club consisted of 18 active members. Officers were Presi- dent-JamesThorton,Vice-Presi- dent-RobertSpyers,Secretary- Mike Jennings and Treasurer - Lammont Nesbitt. By Grace Granillo. French Club guest speakers were Alexandra Krahling - German For- eign Exchange Student, two Ameri- can Foreign Exchange Students from A.F.S. who spent a year in France and Germany, and Christy Schpansky, one of our fellow students, who spent last summer in France. The French Club advisor, Mrs. Marty Diaz- Smith has sponsored meetings at Cholla for the past three years. The meetings were held in F9 every other Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. The fund raisers were sales of Reesels pieces and the selling Croissants at an International Bake Sale with the German and the Black Culture Clubs. Club President - Jennifer Cook stated, I really like the French Club. I encourage people to go on trips to foreign countries. I Want to share foreign languages with other people?
