USS Cl-HPOLA is named for a river which flows through the state of Georgia and Florida in the Southeastern United States. She was built in V944 at Baltimore, Maryland and after her initial tricl cruise, left the East Coast for duty in the Pacific where she refueled battle-ships, cruisers, carriers, and destroyers during the maior engagements which brought the war to a close. Cl-llPOl.A was in Tokyo Bay for the ceremony aboard USS MlSSOURl which brought a welcome peace to the warring nations. Post war activity saw her carrying fuel to various ports around the world and serving with the Seventh Fleet during the Korean Conflict. For her participation with the United Nations forces she received the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. Placed out of commission in August l955, Cl-IIPOLA was back in service for the Suez Crisis but was taken out of commission again in late l957. Cl-IIPOLA remained in reserve until l96O when she was called on to resume her role as a fleet oiler . She was recommissioned in Baltimore, Maryland and in January l96l left the East Coast of the United States for Pearl Harbor, l-lawaii, which remained her home port. Since her last recommissioning, Cl-llPOl.A has made two previous deployments with the United States Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. Cl-llPOl.A's record of service is an impressive one.
