The girls who looked better than average and who would probably come out on top Were LuAnn Capper, Max- ine Poh, Helen lest, and Wanda Starling, heading the singles 5 and Erma Cornu and Lillian Loos listed as the most probable for first doubles. This is the first year that regular badminton matches have been scheduled with tennis matches at League schools. Games were scheduled with Puente, Claremont, Bonita, Corona, and Citrus. Wanda Starling served as this year's badminton manager. At the time the annual Went to press, the G.A.A. tennis team had not been chosen. Outstanding singles players were Betty Harris, DeeDee Hausman, Marilynne Shanks, Arlene Boyer, and Elsie Weber. ln the doubles playing position, competition was keen be- tween Barbara Ryitel, Geraldine Wagner: and Vera Snyder, Annie Morales. At the Corona playday, Chino placed as the top of the Tri-county League schools with three Wins and one tie. Chino seniors tied with the Corona team, lO to lO. Seniors were the Winners in interclass playoffs. The juniors, sophomores, and freshmen placed second, third, and fourth, re- spectively. Geraldine Wagner was captain of the seniors, Vera Snyder led the juniors, Arlene Boyer captained the sophomores, and Margie Wright and Helen Ryckman were the frosh captains. DeeDee l-lausman acted as speedball manager. Basketball SEATED: Vera Snyder, Beulah Tripp, Helen Byckman, Hannah Thompson, Louise Pierce, losephine Rodriguez, STANDING: Arlene Boyer, Annie Morales, Erma Cornu Senior and junior teams tied for first place in interclass basket- ball playoffs held this year. I Pattison When El Chasqui, 1948 went to the press, the definite ladder of the Chino Cowboys racqueteers had not yet been established. It is anticipated that the Vagueros will be well up in T.C.L. standing, however, for there were many returning lettermen that reported to Coach Paul Deacon when tennis season began. The following ladder is expected to be the one used throughout the l948 season with Very few changes forseen: First singles, Fred Bartlett, second singles, Robert Bertschinger, third singles, Stan ford Tomlinson, fourth singles, Robert Brooks, and fifth singles, Dale Bowman. D l As El Chasgui, l948 goes to the press, the Chino High baseball team, caoched by li' rank Elder, is making itself felt as a power in Tri-County League Competition. This year's nine is composed almost entirely of lettermen. Three are back on the Cowboy horsehiders from last year's varsity sguadg seven are up from the l947 junior varsityg and three letter- men in other schools transferred to C.H.S. before the season began and reported to Coach Elder for the Vagueros. Coached by Shirley Moore, the Chino layVees are entering Tri-County League competition for the first time. This year's squad is a strong one, and is making a good showing. The teams also ranked very high in the T. C. L. finals. Excellent coaching, fine teamwork, and the whol e hearted support ot everyone in the school and the community all combined to bring victory to the Vaaueros. Since they were the shortest team in the League, the Cowboys played the run'em to death type ot ball made possible only by flawless training Robert Chavez, this year's captain, was an excel- lent leader. Pat Guillen was chosen the most val- uable player on the squad, and Harold Holder, the m o s t improved player during the season. With a pre-League loss by one touchdown to Coachella and a victory over Valencia, the Vaaueros entered the Tri-county League play with the will to win, and they kept this spirit in the face of heavy odds. Their record was two wins, one tie and two defeats, and Chino High can point to the l947 team with pride, for the fellows always demonstrated the best of sportsmanship. The team voted that William Robles was the most valuable player of the season, and that Robert Bertschinqer was the most improved player on the team. Each year an international contest is sponsored by The Gregg Writer, and awards are made to students all over the world who submit the most artistic shorthand copies. Classes practiced several months before their best single copy was submitted for membership. Usually only one gold pin is awarded, but this year there were ten winners. Under the able leadership of lvan Mayfield and lohn Young, agriculture instructors, the members exhibited live- stock and won awards at the Orange County Fair, the Bank of America judging contest at Palomar, the Great Western Livestock Show at Los Angeles, and at the Cow Palace at San Francisco. The group also participated in activities at the lndio Date Festival. One of their number, Salvador Diaz, won first prize in the Co- operative Quiz contest, and Walter Rohrer, Howard Morter, and Don Rix took second, third, and fourth places, respectively. Farmers did not neglect the lighter side of life, either, and at their annually sponsored dance they crowned Patricia Mauzey their queen. The annual Parent-Son banquet is held in the spring. For the past s e v e r a l years the fellows have been aatekeepers, ticket sellers, and have served as student officials at most of the athletic contests he l d at C. H. S. This year B weight letter winners formed themselves into a like organization, wearina a white school sweater rather than the blue Varsity sweater, and the blue letter and stripes rather than the white which the varsity lettermen sport. During the 1947-48 school year, the members of the Chino chapter of the California Scholarship Federation, under the advisorship of Mrs. Genevieve McCrossen, have enjoyed several social events together as well as their yearly Honor Day which was spent at Lake Arrowhead. Four seniors became the proud possessors of life membership CSE pins, making the grade of at least six semesters' membership. Those were Helen lest, Margaret Grant, Henry Norton, and Stanford Tomlinson. This organization was led in l947-48 by Stanford Tomlinson as president, Ray lto, vice-president: loe Snyder, secretary: lack Garcia, treasurer, and Harold Wilson, sergeant-at-arms. Henry Azhderian served as faculty adviser. Monthly meetings, during which sports movies and talks were a feature of the program, culminated in a Bean Feed at the close of the school year. At this annual affair much fun and many sports events were the order of the day. Mr. Qbert Rod and his students in printshop deserve recogni- tion tor their cooperation with the paper staff in getting the Lariat to everyone every Thursday.
