Lotin ond Sponish Recent developments in inter- national affairs have made us realize the need for a more thorough understanding of all the nations in the world and a closer cooperation with certain of these nations. This neces- sity for understanding and co- operation will continue, and we hope will result in an increased emphasis on the study of foreign languages. For pupils who have the ability to profit from their study, for- eign languages offer opportun- ities to develop enjoyable and lasting interests of an avocation- al nature. For those pupils who plan to enter institutions of higher learning foreign lan- guages have a preparatory fun- ction: in the case of certain pro- fessions this t'unction may be said to be vocational. For those few who will not continue their education after high school grad- uation. language study contrib- utes definitely to their under- standing of English. Students of Chillicothe High School are exceedingly fortunate in being able to elect two units of a language for graduation, either Spanish or Latin. In view ot' the fact that the courses are elet-tive, the nuiuber enrolled in the department is high. This year thirty-seven students are taking Latin or Spanish, twenty- three in Latin and fourteen in Spanish A survey shows that twenty-five per cent of this year's senior class have com- pleted two units of 3 foreign language. At the beginning of eavh year clubs are organized, each stu- dent of Spanish or Latin being eligible for membership. lt is a tradition of the school for the second year classes to induet the beginning students into the clubs through various kinds of initia- tion ceremonies. If Students are able to survive this evening of festivities they become full- fledged members of the clubs. -1 ,J linglishf Lit:-rriti Latin il 'sy ch ologjv 'sill'-'l'l4'2lII Hist0ryASs-coiul Hour I ui-lic Spcakiiig Socjiol Studies The emphasis i11 grade seven is on world geography and in grade eight on American history and government. Such topics as the school, the home, and the church are studied and their relations to the students every day life noted. The relation of a student to the local government is also studied, the objective of which is to train the boy and girl ot' today, to be better men and women of their communities to- morrow, and to enable them to make a. greater contribution to their government than they would otherwise have done. Following citizenship the next course in social science is world history, which is a requirement for all sophomores. This course picks man up at his earliest t'orm of civilization and brings him up to modern times. The formation of countries is followed and the rise and fall of nations is stud- ied which prepares the back- ground for American history. the requirement in the junior year. Americans should know their own history. The various na- tional organizations ot social science teachers cooperated on the Committee of Teaching American History in Schools and Colleges. This committee gave the following reasons why all Americans should know their own history. History makes loyal citizens because memories of common experiences and common aspira- tions are essential ingredients in patriotism. History makes intelligent voters because sound decisions about present pi'ob- lems must be based on knowl- edge ot' past. History makes good neighbors because it teach- es tolerance ot' individual dif- ferences and appreciation ot' varied abilities and interests. History' makes stable well round- ed individuals because it gives them a start toward understand- ing the pattern cf societv and toward enjoying the artistic and intellectual productions of the past. lt gives long views, a per- spective, a measure ot' what is permanent in a nation's life. To a pcople. history is what mem- ory is to ati individual: memory, express or unconscious. guides the acts of every sentient being. All this is true, but not in an exclusive sense, History leads to all these goals: so do other subjects studied in schools. Uivies, geography and sociology also aid in developing loyal in- telligent citizens: art and liter- ature help to create tolerant. sympathetic well-rounded indi- viduals. Each one has a definite place in the l'lll'l'll'llllllll. Formal history is needed to bridge the gap between the litnit- ed experience ot the individual and the tremendously complica- ted experience on which our civilizatiou is built. Mathematics Department The Mathematics Department in the Chillicothe High Sehcol has been organized to meet the general needs ot' all pupils. Every person uses mathematics in conducting personal business affairs and in working around his hotne. The greater part ot' this knowledge is attained by the student while he is acquiring his elementary education. All students who graduate from our high school are requir- ed to have one unit of mathe- matics aud it is usually recom- mended that they meet this re- quirement by taking general mathematics ir their freshman year. The objectives of this course are to develop the ability to solve more practical prob- lems that are met in everyday lite. to improve sltill and ac- curacy in the fundamental oper- ations ot' mathematics, and to become acquainted with some ot' the principles ot' algebra. geom- etry. and trigonotnetry. There have been several stu- dents from this treshtnan class that have an unusual aptitude for mathematics and have been permitted to take a'gebra in- stead of general mathematics. These students probably plan to enter a vocation that requires a better understanding of mathe- matics, and ot' course algebra is essential it' one wishes to pursue the study ot' higher mathematics. For the student who wishes to continue his mathematical stud- ies and who is especially inter- ested in physical science and nearly all phrases of engineer- ing. we offer plane geometry. solid geometry, trigonotnetry. and advanced algebra. Science Department livery individual ent-ounters ninnerous personal problems eat-h day in which an elementary knowledge ot' st-ienee is neees- sary it' he is to inet-t these prob- lems suet-essfully. Many pupils realize this need for soine cer- tain aequaintanee with applied st-ienee for living in a highly st-ientifie culture. To satisfy this need, five units of science are offered to students ot' U. H. S. nalnely, general seience, bi' ology, physit-s, and rlieinistry, one unit courses respeetivelyg eleetricity and niat-hines. lg unit eourses earh. General science, the regular freshnian course, gives pupils an opportunity to bet-oine fainiliar with eertain elenientary prinei- ples and faets ot' seienre and their eonnnon applit-ations. lt. also. gives elementary training in the seientifit' method. Biology, the usual sophomore eourse. ac-quaints pupils with the fuudaniental prohleins which all living things inust solve and helps them understand and ap- previate the living world about theni. The huinan phase is pare tieularly stressed. There is also a possihle vocational interest in this eonrse. t'hen1istry deals with the coni- position of all known matter. The relatfonship of ehetnistry to industry. eonservation ol' natur- al resourees, agriculture. pur- ehasing and producing eeonoinie goods. the honie, health and na- tional defense is unmistakable. Physies deals with the natural physical laws ol' the universe and their praetival, intelligent. si-ientifit' use in our daily lives. Nlavhines and elertrieity are spec-ialized courses in the field of physit-s. which were intro- dueed into our high sehool' enr- rit uluni as pre-induetion training eourses, This year three air- plane engines, sextants, preci- sion nieasuring deviees, and other equipment have been ob- tained froni the Arny Air Fort-es for use in these Courses. A eourse in seienve for junIor high Ifll1lilS was added this year. This work rovers material neees- sary as a hasis for general st ienee. The seventh grade takes up the study ot' science and what it has done tor inan in the explora- tion ot' the world. The eighth grade work is based on the Con- tinuous t-hanges taking plaee in the world and the scientific: reasons for these vhanges. Health is studied in hoth grades the last ot' the year. Commerciol Deportmerit The Secretarial Division ot' the f'ommercial Department is com- prised of the two elective sub- jects ot' typewriting and short- hand. lt is not the aim of this department to turn out a fin- ished secretary or stenograph- er at the end of one year, but rather to give a thorough back- ground in the fundamental skills and traits to be used as a basis for further study either before or on the job. ln typewriting, the ability to operate and maintain the mach- ine efficiently and the applica- tion of this ability to various uses of a personal and semi-per- sonal nature is stressed. This includes such divisions as letter writing, straight-copy work, ar- tistic typing, rough drafts, out- lining, tabulation, manuscript writing, and footnotes. Typing is a valuable subject in the de- velopment of such traits as emo- tional control, cooperation, con- centration, judgment, and re- sourcefulness. Shorthand. at the present time, is purely a vocational subject. The first six months ot' the course are given over to learn- ing the principles ot' the Man- ual and to developing an easy and fluent writing style of these common words. During the last three months, more time is spent in rapid writing practice, devel- oping a larger vocabulary of usable words. and transcription on the typewriter from the stu- dent's own notes. The Commercial Club is open to any junior or senior who has at least two credits of commer- cial work. The members this year voted to affiliate themsel- ves with the national organiza- tion of the Future Business Lead- ers of America and they are now the seventy-sixth chapter to ho'd such membership, 'l'yping:-'l'hir1l llo Art-lfifth lloui' Music-Ti' Fort y - one 44... l 1-111111. 111111111 H011 X 1111111 U11-x 111111 Houi 5911101 Nt1111x H111 Home Ecomomtcs T1111 V111'11ti111111l 111111111 1111111111111- il'S l'lll'1'1l'll1ll1l1 is 1111 1111-1-tiw l'1l1l1'H0 Wlli1'l1 Ul,l'Q'l'S l111'l'1' 1-r1'111ts t11w11r11 gfillillillillll. P. llazelton ot' Tarrytown, New York. made to the l'hillicothe High School a two per cent donation on the S2t0,000 bonds which he held on the old l't-ntral School building. This money was to be used in establishing a library which should be known as Hazelton Public School Library ot' Chilli- cothe, Missouri. On Mr. Hazel- ton's death he left to the library at beautiful marble bust and two handsome glass cases containing curios culled from the sea. There still remains in a back alcove ot' the library two sec- tions ot' books from the original school library. The books are interesting through comparisons made with the advanced books that girls and boys are reading today. ln 18210 the library had grown to 5,000 volumes. ln the inter- vening t'it'ty-six years it has grown to 11,972 volumes, with a circulation of between five and six hundred books per month. Between torty and titty monthly and weekly magazines which are concerned with every subject connected with the school's work, are on the shelves and have a large daily circulation in the school. All books in the library are catalogued and distributed by the llewey decimal system, and all work is kept up to date in its administration. Diversified Qccgopotions Objectives: A student has the opportunity of learning an occu- pation on the apprentice plan, The learning plan includes study and actual experience on the job under the joint supervision ot' the sthool and the community. A student is placed in the occupa- tion ot' his choice and in the one he is best fitted tor. Related in- formation is given in the class- room and actual experience is received on the job. A student earns while he learns. Eligibility: Students must be at least lti years ot' age and a junior in high school. Types ot' stations: The very highest types ot' stations and em- ployers in Vhillicothe cooperate. Plan: The student works halt' a day and goes to school halt' a day. Activities: Annual employer- employee dinner. Skating party each year. Each class selects the student most apt to succeed in life. Adult committee selects the student who does the best job in dealing with the public. Uredits: One unit of credit is allowed for time spent at work, and one for the classwork, 539 ' P KN KRW IX 11lKlDN XTH rout ron Fl! on L stopnx x 1 rm N N In 1 N ink Lllllb pher Xxlul Daan xmlth op row edrum lmhaxt Ivonxh Iudvnz tkl g NluL,..ue-I XX 1 x 1Qu en! .Iumox Alexau ex Agriculture Deportmpmt c al gn ult 1 1x..e xx xv nut' 1 n . .un ho The pxogram IQ diumled into Clt1Nb10OIU work supcxnserl 11101911 SKIOU and LXIIdfl1IllLlll3l actlsl ne- xx th emphaws on the eupmsx td proymr proerxm The dPIPdlIlIl9l1t has a Ohqxtelui clllpten or tortw llxe futlw IIIFIIIUOIE Twemx mue boys nompleted Ioxtw me production plojects tor 1 total labor IXILUIHQ ot S111438' tor the wear I- ortw four Bays' Physical Education The prime purpose of our physical eduvation work is fun at all tinies.
