Injuries to key men was the determining factor in the outcome of many of the games. Bud Riggin, Charles Von Kennel, and Paul Uhrig all had the misfortune of receiving ankle injuries during the season. Scholastic ineligibility also played its part in the outcome of the season, but despite these handicaps, the Cavaliers undauntedly attacked their foes and every opponent felt their fury. Frank Lee, who was chosen honorary captain by his teammates, for the second time was placed on the Central Ohio League all star team The Cavaliers started the season by defeat mg Iackson 14 6 on touchdowns by Frank Lee and Bud Riggin Continuing along the victory trail our gridsters coasted over Washington C H 26 F3 ln our third game however a power laden Zanesville aggregation throttled the Cav aliers 34 U This contest saw Bud Riggin and Bob Kelley, the running threats, along with Paul Kysor, seriously injured. Following this de- feat the Cavaliers journeyed to Lancaster. Here the battered Chillicothe eleven was held to a l2-l2 tie by a lighter Golden Gales team. At Newark a week later Chillicothe again fell in defeat as the Wildcats ran wild to the tune of 40-O. ln the thriller of the year Marietta scored a last minute touchdown to gain a hard fought 20-19 victory. The Cavaliers finished the game threatening to score from the Tiger's twenty- seven yardline. At Dover the following week, the Cavaliers seemed exhausted and the Tor- nadoes romped to a AO U win ln this game for the third straight year Captain Frank Lee was unable to finish because of iniuries Next Coshocton handed the Cavaliers the worst de feat a Chillicothe team has taken in seventeen years The score was 56 O Ending the season at Cambridge in the next week the Cavaliers rebounded to take a 7 U victory VARSITY FOOTBALL SQUAD Standing A sistint Q nh Edward R sstr A sisiant Coarh Howird Atrr B t K lly l M iris l roy H iwk Coach Fllls Hatton Third Row Dick Klepinger Kenneth Dennew1t7 Bob Cutright Bill Hess Fur no Miller I H s Second Row George Griesheimer lim Cutrzght Frank Lee Charles Riqtii How rrl DeLon1 Charlc s Von Kennel Front Row Piul Uhrig Dick Clark Denny Newt erry Paul Kysor Wil tri F rrk Neil Du ty Page Fifty six N r . . . . . .1 if . . . . , , , , I 1 . The next game was the egnith for the Red Devils- they defeated a previously unbeaten Portsmouth Trojan quintet 57-25 for a victory unequaled by a Chillicothe team. Neil Iohnston and Roy Taylor accounted for 45 of the points Neil with 25 and Shode with 20. The Devils slowed down when the Hills- boro lndians visited them but had little trouble in amassing a 33-22 victory. Half a fortnight later some Cowboys from Colum- bus West galloped into Chillicothe but were surprised by a 49-29 defeat. Neil lohnston made twenty-five points for the second time. Another twenty points was grabbed from the Hurricanes of Wilmington who were taken by the Devils in their stride 46-26. Seven days later the Troian s tasted sweet revenge at Portsmouth as they downed the Red Devils 44 34 Getting back in the victory column again Coach Young s boys went round and round the Roundtowners at Circleville handing them a 40 24 defeat Then the Devils scored their sixth league victory of the season by defeating the Blue Lions at Washington C H 36 24 The next night the Wildcats came over from Newark hoping to avenge the ear lier defeat but they didnt count on the fight ing spirit of the Chillicothe quintet which overtook a six point lead in the final minute to tie the score and overcame a four point lead in the overtime to win the game 38 37 The next Friday brought the return engage ment with McClain The game was a ding tied at the half However Chrllicothe had that big third quarter and won 33 26V This game gave them undisputed possession of first place in the league The next two games were away from home The Red Devils traveled to Hillsboro to down the Indians 31 19 and went to Wil mington to play the title clincher They led all of the way until the Hurricanes tied it up in the last minute ln the first overtime neither team scored but in the second sud den death one Buss Morris sank one to win the game 33 3l The final game of the regular season was played here with a Lancaster team which went on to win the District Tournament defeating Chillicothe 47-37. In the only game which the Red Devils played in the tournament at Portsmouth they lost to Ironton 32-20. Although the boys didn t finish the season in a classy manner they have much to boast of. Neil lohnston was given honorable mention on the all-State team and Morris McCloskey and Iohnston were given po- sitions on the All-League second team. And of course they won the league champion- ship. Unless calls from the service intervene all of the lettermen and CAAS except Don Martin who is sure to be called, will return next year giving us an even better team.
