S i. Zfaej-ze' QQ' M 1957-58 FOOTBALL SEASON The 1957 Tigers anticipated a rugged year following an undefeated 1956-57 season. Losing ten lettermen, the fans, nevertheless, enjoyed a thrilling year watching the team work itself into one of the outstanding teams of the state, with an 8-2 record. The football season got off to a wet start with the postponement of the Clanton game. The Tigers invaded Columbiana and trounced them 51-0, sparked by Ovcrtvrl, Shoemaker, Hixson, and Saue r. On their second game, Lincoln put up a fight but was downed 6-O, with the help of Overton's touchdown. In the Tiger's next game, fine play by the whole team resulted in a 32 -3 defeat of Comer. In the fourth game of the season, the Tigers met Wetumpka and, although they scored first, we came back in fine style to override them 27-12. .Tohn Carroll was the next victim of the mighty Tigers who downed them 26-7 on Homecoming night. It was in this game that Joe Sauer hurt his leg. The fabulous C.H.S. team finally dropped its twenty game winning streak by losing to Talladega 13-O, in a heartbreaker. Undaunted, the Tigers came back the next week and whipped Walter Welborn 13-O. Childersburg met Sylacauga November 15, in the game which, as always, was the game of the year. Sylacauga scored the first two touchdowns, but the Tigers came back and scored on a kickoff return of 92 yards by Ronnie Hixon. Sylacauga scored again, making the score 19-6. A pass from Clark to Overton provided the Tigers second TD and the game ended 19-12, with the Tigers in Possession of the ball on the Aggies l yard line. The Tigers downed Clanton in their ninthgame to end Clanton's hope of an undefeated season. Overton made a fine one-handed catch with the help of Kallenbach, Giddens and Nix. Hixon returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown. Clanton's highly-rated team was defeated 27-8. In the final game of the season, the Tigers whipped a tough West Blocton team 28-O, with the help of Wayne Giddens dependable toe. The statistics of the 1957 year are as follows: AVERAGE AVERAGE RUSHES YARDS PER RUSH RUSHES YARDS PER RUSH Sauer G2 365 9 Bush 46 190 4 Hixon 141 l035 7, 3 Vincent 13 105 8 Shoemaker 73 461 6. l C.H.S. scored 222 points to 73 points for the opponents. Shoemaker attempted66 passes, completed 29 which went for 674 yards. His average yardage for passes was 23. Overton threw 14 passes for 346 yards with an average of 24.7 yards per pass. TD's made Hixon 10g Shoemaker 7, and passing for 7g Overton 7, Bush 5, Vincent l. Childersburg moved the ball aggressively for 3, 028 yards against the opponents 1,514 yards. This concluded what many spectators believed to be the outstanding year in the history of football at C.H.S. The prospects for next year seem equally bright to the returning Tigers who elected as their 1958 Captains, Bill Kallenbach and Fill Bush. 68 -r .: ', ., 'ef-ffv. E cf? Wana JQD A !
