1961 annum As the gradual .g class of nineteen hundred and sixty-one prepares to walk boldly into the future, it pauses to meditate its Alma Mater. Her many aspects are represented in the school seal of three fields: the dexter chief, the coat-of-arms of William Penn for whom Pennsylvania was named; the sinister chief, three garbs from the Seal of the Earldom of Chester, England, for whom Chester was nainea; and the bottom section the good ship Welcome which carried William Penn to the new world and is also representative of the school’s educanoRal values and athletic teams. The crest is the famous tower of Chester High School and the motto ribbon is the proclamation of the school’s name. Taken from our vast historical background, each field is symbolic not only of past accomplishments but also of future achievements. Although the seal is new, the virtues for which it stands are traditions which have always been associated with the fine name of Chester High School. f OR6UUORD D€DICRTIOn MR. JAMES DeROSE Our class remembers James V. DeRose, who came to Chester High School in 1944, and who was head of the science department for sixteen years. We remember him as an excellent teacher; as an understanding friend and as a brilliant man with a soft voice, keen insight, and a nice sense of humor. Mr. DeRose inspired his students to value knowledge, truth, and integrity. His own love for knowledge was reflected in his teaching. To our school, he brought the Chemical Bond Approach and the Physical Science Study Committee courses, which were at the time still in the trial stages and which emphasized individual thinking and understanding of concepts rather than facts. Every stu- dent who was fortunate enough to have these courses, has had a very valuable experience in learning. Although one cannot really measure the good he has done for our class and our school, we would like to thank him by dedicating the Nineteen Hundred Sixty-One Annual to Mr. DeRose. 4 Dr. Leah Jordan came to Chester High School in 19J5. In 1957 she became head of the English Department and served in the capacity until 1960 when she left to join the teaching faculty of Kutztown State College. In 1948 she founded the Karl E. Agan Chapter of the Future Teachers of America which has become an outstanding organization. Her dynamic personality and teaching skill not only influenced her students and professional associates while she was at Chester High, but they have instilled in those who remain, a desire to still pursue the high goals she set forth. Because of her great contribution to the school and community, the Class of 1961 takes pleasure in dedicating its yearbook to this outstanding American educator. DR. LEAH JORDAN ADmimsTRflTion The Board of Education Left to right: A. Przedzial, Rev. J. Link, T. Lyons, J. Vaul, C. Long. M. Peckerman, F. Donahoo (president), R. D’lorio, C. Kreivel, J. Sapovits, W. Pastuszek, E. Parry, C. Pennington. The Board of Education lays the basic foundation on which the school oper- ates. Each member of the Board is a behind-the-scene person who endeavors to give each student the best education, various opportunities in the field of his interest, and to remunerate the citizens of the community by keeping good schools and returning fine, responsible citizens to the community. The programs designed by the Board provide each student with a cultural background, as well as a well- rounded education; and healthful social activities. The school and the Board of Education work together for the welfare of every student, and every resident of the city of Chester. 9 Administrators CHARLES D. LONG Superintendent of Schools The school programs of Chester are directed by Mr. Charles D. Long, Superintendent; Mr. John J. Vaul, Assistant Superintendent; and Mr. Joseph M. Joseph, Coordinator of Curricula in Public Education. These programs are arranged to give each pupil every opportunity of securing the best possible advantages of education. Industriously they set about to manage school problems, to institute new educational programs, to carefully select textbooks and equipment needed for educational advancement, and to se- cure a suitable curriculum for the students. Through the efforts of these administrators’ educational program, the students are better able to achieve their goals so that they may become an asset to the community. JOHN J. VAUL Asst. Superintendent of Schools JOSEPH M. JOSEPH Coordinator of Curriculum 10 SARAH P. HOLCROFT Vice-Principal WILLIAM A. SLEZAK Vice-Principal CHARLES A. GILES Principal Mr. Giles met his untimely death in a tragic automobile accident in April. PATRICIA ENNAMORATO DOLORES PERKINS CHARMAINE TOBIN Coordinators 12 GENEVIEVE BURGESS One of the first duties of Mrs. Burgess, the attendance secretary, is to type the daily attendance record. Indispensable to the functioning of a class is the coordinator, whose purpose is to aid the students in achieving success. Helping students to adjust to school life, to choose suitable courses, to plan social affairs, and to select colleges are services they perform daily. With the cooperative endeavors of the senior, junior, and sophomore coordinators, by graduation a class is prepared to enter society as a credit to Chester High School. Office Staff Always busy, yet willing to help with prob- lems, are the school’s staff, consisting of Mrs. Genivieve Burgess, Miss Patricia Ennamorato, Mrs. Delores Perkins, and Mrs. Charmaine Tobin. This group is composed entirely of Chester High Alumnae. Usually Mrs. Burgess can be found working with the attendance records and transfers for stu- dents while Mrs. Perkins, secretary to Mr. Giles, completes college transcripts for those seniors planning to enter college. In the same office with Mrs. Perkins, Mrs. Tobin takes charge of the bookkeeping for the school. The newest secretary, Miss Ennamorato, as- sists Miss Holcroft with letters of attendance and with the consultation of students concerning their absences. Mimeograph twenty copies,” says Miss Holcroft to her secretary, Miss Ennamorato. Mr. Slezak, Mrs. Perkins, Mr. Giles and Mr. Tobin meet with Miss Holcroft to discuss a pending problem. 13 fflCULTY English Department The English Department, headed by Mr. Albert J. Buono, gives the students of Chester High School a good background in English. This de- partment supplies students with a rich vocabulary, reading skills, a mas- tery of grammar, and an excellent background in literature. Because English is indispensable for all professions, most students realize its values and work enthusiastically to master it. Along with this realization, the friendliness of the teachers also encourages the students to do their best. The combination enables the department to carry out its program successfully. ALBERT J. Social Studies Department Providing the students with a panoramic view of the world, the Social Studies Department strives to give pupils an understanding and appreciation of the world and its people. Directed by Mrs. Hannah F. Cassell, this department carries out its program through class discussions supple- mented by films and individual reports. In this way, the pupils regard the subject realistically—as a record of people and their actions. Students who take advantage of these courses enjoy many vicarious experiences and find pleasure in the knowledge of world happenings. 18 Mr. Madison and C. Wimberly discuss the Civil War while R. Meisil and D. Logeman look on. RICHARD MADISON HERMAN MAILMAN HAROLD HARTMAN Language Department Walking through the corridors of Chester High School, a blend of various tongues can be heard conversing in Latin, French, German, or Spanish. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Harold Hartman, the students are not only taught to read, write, and speak a language, but they are also initiated into the customs and history of the country where the language evolved. This enables a student to converse knowingly in languages of his choice. t department head, B. Moore, E. Bendhert, D. Washing- FRED G. ADDIS ton, C. Joynes, and W. Jen- nings look on attentively. Through class- room instructions and experimental find- ings, the students are able to enlarge their understanding of theories. The program of this fine depart- ment includes: biology, chemistry, phys- ics, general science, psychology, and pho- tography. Students who devote their at- tention to these courses graduate with a broader knowledge of the physical world. Mr. R. Smith looks on as students work on a problem in astronomy. Commercial Department W. ROBERT PROSSER To prepare students to accept positions in the highly competitive world of business, the Chester High School Commercial Department, under the guidance of Mr. Robert Prosser, offers a diversified curriculum. This course provides training in three major areas of business: Secretarial, Accounting and Distributive Education. Opportunities for commercial graduates are unlimited and the Com- mercial Department prepares its students to work efficiently, so that they can meet the many challenges offered by the business world. ALDA M. ADAMS GEORGE BAKSI EDITH E. BARTHA HELEN M. In this course mornings arc devoted to instruction and afternoons are spent working at jobs which are secured for students through the school. Unlike many courses, Dis- tributive Education is able to provide on-the-job training with classroom activities. Now, this coat is made to last,” explains J. Reilly, a Distributive Ed. Student, to an interested customer. Distributive Education School can be fun when you’re profiting b your experiences, muses J. Armstrong as she sorts files. 23 CHARLES F. This is evidenced by the fact that a large number of graduates from the department take their place in the industrial world immediately after grad- uation. ''Make sure it's on tightly,” says Mr. Clendenning lo R. Cooke and G. Becker. GEORGE M. McCAIN LOUIS K. MUTZES A. Reed, M. Collachi, S. Boyd, and C. Because of the great chal- lenges in this field today, the importance of this course cannot be overemphasized. Mr. Emile H. Huber, head of the department, coordinates activi- ties and insures students of a firm foundation in mathematical pro- cedure. , These courses, which include business mathematics, algebra, geom- etry, and trigonometry, provide students with versatile mathematical abilities. The splish splash of brushes echoes daily from the Art Department under the firm guidance of Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis and Mrs. Ella Lungren. Students in this department, encouraged to be free and creative, receive diversified training in all phases of art. Periodically, contests enable them to exercise their skills, and at the same time, to advance their knowledge of the subject. With such a fine back- ground in art, new avenues in this field are sure to be opened to the conscientious students upon commencement. The Art Department of Chester High School is one of which the school can be proud. Mr. DeFelice listens for a discordant note while leading the school band. RUDOLPH DeFELICE Rehearsing for an appearance. Band members: R. Armstrong, F. Scibilia, J. Khuen, G. Mirolli, N. Marriner, R. Broadus, M. Fuller, J. Well, and L. Chandler play a piece for Mr. DeFelice. Music Department LEWIS R. ZELLEY Under the direction of Mr. Lewis Zelley and Mr. R. DeFelice, the Music Department, one of Chester High School’s greatest assets, offers a challenge that has led many students to a successful career in music. In addition to providing the students with a good musi- cal background, the department adds color to sports events and special presentations, such as holiday programs, com- munity projects, and guest appearances. VC hether at a foot- ball game or a Spring Concert, the audience always enjoys the performances of the music department. Consisting of the concert choir, the orchestra, and the band, the music department provides useful experiences for the participants in courses of harmony and arrangement, a means for development of musical talents and entertainment for all. Standing at attention and prepared to find an- other word for one District Band are P. Horn- ing, C. W'allcer, and R. Armstrong. Physical Department EARL E. BLAZYNSKY JOANNE DALY LEONA M. SEALEY RUTH W. MARTINEZ 30 'Block that shot!” What’s the score?’’ These are shouts which may be heard coming from the gymnasium dur- ing the physical education classes. Games and fun are not, however, the only activi- ties associated with this department. As the name implies, physical edu- cation is its main objective. This program consists of calisthenics, sports, and ap- paratus workouts. As a result of this ex- tensive program, the department has done much to bring about the healthy growth and physical development of the student body. How many baskets are you planning to make today, Rosie?” inquires Mrs. Daly, while D. Cummings and M. Crooks wait for the game to begin. Driver Education Going at an astounding speed of fif- teen miles per hour, Driver Education students may frequently be seen around the school, receiving instructions from Mr. Robert B. Grainger, the director of the course. In addition to the behind-the-wheel experience that they receive, the stu- dents are also given a classroom course in which they are taught the fundamen- tals of safe driving. The course has been a tremendous success. ROBERT R. GRAINGER Mr. Grainger, B. Yaich, and D. Pa- trycia prepare to enter the car for a driving lesson. Library Department HELEN B. THOMAS Although newly elected to the positions of as- sistant librarian and librarian, Mrs. Gill and Mrs. Thomas are doing an excellent job of running things smoothly. The students and faculty of Chester High School, through the school library, are provided with excellent and varied read- ing matter. Here can be found reference material of all types, current news and magazines, as well as the usual non-fiction, fic- tion, and periodicals. Mrs. Helen B. Thomas and her assistant, Mrs. Catherine Gill, who are new to the library this year, have done a wonderful job of making their new environment a quiet, yet stimulating place of study. 31 ROSE KACIUBAN MARGARET K. Sophomore Class Officers and Advisors Entering Chester High School was a new event in the lives of the sophomore class. Faced with the frightening experience of so many corridors, and new personalities, these novices managed during the school year to blend themselves within the varied population. The year’s curriculum lends itself decisive in the final selection of courses; that is, vocation for future years is usually decided upon during this period. Under the competent guidance of Miss Regina Hynes, the class coordinator, indoctrination into the school is made complete by tests and an explanation of the school’s policies. The Sophomore Hop, an annual function, was given with the help of the class advisors, whose aid and understanding is welcomed by every member of the class. H.R. B-1 (Mr. Cadman) First Row: B. This period has arrived for the Junior Class of Chester High School. Directed by their coordinator, Mr. Charles Zimmerman, this group of 640 students is constantly striving to reach this acme. To illustrate how vigorously these students arc dealing with their endeavor arc the numerous scholastic achievements. In addition to receiving cer- tificates from the Science Research Association in the National Educational Development Tests, some students received other meritorious awards. To make this project more interesting, the Junior Class had a Prom. Wonderland by Night, although constantly minded that their studies should have priority. With this attitude, the eminent juniors of Chester High School are looking forward to the challenge of the senior year. Junior Class Officers and Advisors H.R. 2 (Mr. Mailman) First Row: S. Clark, D. As seniors, we consider our final year in Chester High a consummation of our finest school experiences. We recall our impulsiveness as freshmen, sophistication as sophomores, jauntiness as juniors, and sveltness as seniors. On these past vears, the graduating class of nineteen hundred and sixty one will reminisce often. Coupled with these memories is the excitement caused by College Board Examinations, placement tests, acceptance into college, and the awarding of scholarships. Successful interviews at jobs or col- leges leave seniors with an ecstatic feeling of accom- plishment. Highlighting the senior year were the Class Trip, the Senior Ball, Class Day, and Graduation, the zen- ith of our secondary education. During these years at Chester High School in which we were expertly guided by our coordinator, Mrs. Evangeline Jones, we acquired a golden harvest of knowledge. As we diverge into numerous walks of life, the memory of Chester High School will be deeply instilled within us. F. Evans. Vice-President; S. Chaplin, Treasurer; E. Jones, Advisor; E. Hinder- hofer. A few, however, remember this year with dismay, but for most, it is a time of supremacy and recognition. Busy with exams, term papers, and extra-curricular activities, the senior, somehow, has time to compile his hectic schedule into a compact, functioning routine. It is at this point, when so many things clamor for attention, such as college and job interviews and pressure is exerted from many sources, that achievement of past and present endeavors is sought. Perhaps the most versatile members of the senior class are those who have been chosen by the Chester Business Men and Women as boy or girl of the month. The following students received this coveted award based on scholarship, leadership, and integrity: Marjory Wilson, Mary Jane Dwyer, Murna Mandell, Ronald Gibbs, Franklin Evans, Andrew Kane, Carl Holland, Justin Polulack, Charles Silcox, John Struss, and Melvin Jackson. Certainly, knowledge is the key of success, and at Chester High there is living proof. Bestowed with the honor of being chosen finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Contest, Charles Silcox and Dennis Taylor proudly repre- sented their school, and for Charles it is a double honor, for he also received the American Legion Award. Thanks to Marjory Wilson, the feminine gender will not be neglected in this eulogy, for Marjy is the winner of the 1961 Betty Crocker Award, the D.A.R. Award, and the Thomas Edison Award, which is given to a student showing outstanding scientific abilities. All work and no play would make Chester High a dull place; and with so many sports events, our school is anything but dull. Participation in a variety of sports has not only increased spirit, but has brought honor to many students. In the field of football, Robert Crawford, who played on the All-Delaware County, All-Scholastic, and All-Suburban football teams; and Robert Warburton, who received the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award from the South Chester Optimist Club, and was named Most Valuable Player of Chester’s football team by the Coaches Association of Delaware County, will set fine examples for future grid stars. When Chester High isn’t tossing the ball for a twenty yard pass, then the ball is being dribbled down a basketball court by capable hands, and usually those hands belong to Emerson Baynard. Em” was a member of the first teams of All-State and All-American, and secured the most points in a basketball game in the history of Delaware County. And who can forget Lew Krausse’s numerous no-hit games! Not only is Chester High proud of its illustrious sportsmen, but also of its excellent musicians. The Dance Band was selected to first place out of competition with twelve schools, and a member of the band, Ralph Armstrong, was chosen as instrumentalist of the evening. This year, as a special request from President Eisenhower, the band had the honor of playing at the 1960 Republican Convention in New York. Although art is considered a delicate subject, it, nevertheless, plays a major role in the beautification of our school. An exhibit, created by budding artists, was displayed in the corridors of Chester High School. A few of these artists have already made claims to fame: First place winner in the Annual Window Painting Contest was Ernestine Beckett; and winners of the New Century Club Award, which is given to talented art students, were Lana Bilisnansky and Claudia Robbins. The skills and efforts of these young people, who will be the citizens of tomorrow, contribute to the warm atmosphere found in Chester High School. 107 ORGRniZRTIOnS Student Council First Row: L. The Student Council of Chester High School performs many services for the school. Led by Mr. Alfred Antonelli, this or- ganization orientates students to school life, enforces school laws, supplies school necessities, announces coming events, and takes charge of social activities. In addition, the Student Council supervises school elections and money-raising campaigns for philanthropic organizations. The most important function of this group is school govern- ment. Pupils who break the laws set forth by the Council are liable to punishment. The Student Council is one of the organizations responsible for the friendly spirit and co-ordination of the school. L. Key Club The Key Club, under the direction of Mr. Frank Hashorva, contributes ex- cessively to Chester High School by working with its sponsors, the Chester Kiwanis, in performing community projects as well as school services. The members, boys displaying leadership, dependability, and adequate schol- arship, are selected by the recommendations of the principal, of the faculty, and of the Key Club Membership Committee. Serving as host to the International Convention, aided the Key Club in es- tablishing a reputation that has proven advantageous to the well-being of the schooh A. These fran- tic flurries of activity are all a part of the tri-weekly duties of the young knights of the pen known as The Welcome staff. Advised by Miss Barbara Zerbe, the busy bees ’ of the Annual could constantly be seen feverishly projecting words onto the data sheets, perfecting the layout, craftily snapping profiles, and energetically striving to secure finance for publication. Such an agenda in no way disillusioned the industrious future edi- tors”; and as a reward for their perseverance, students eagerly rushed to publications to receive the Annual,” one of their most prized possessions. Upon completion, the Annual” staff ambled out of publications to reminisce, along with other seniors, over their finished product. 117 Here and There Planning the schedule for the year are B. These decorations create a pleasant atmosphere through- out the school. Members are kept busy preparing for their exhibition at the Parents’ Club each year and by sponsoring differ- ent activities to raise money for trips to art museums. Because it performs such vital functions, the Art Club is of great value to the school. Mr . Ellis and Mr . For the tenth consecutive year the Pennsyl- vania Industrial Chemical Corporation has do- nated 20,000 to Chester High School for the promotion of its students’ education. Students are eligible for a scholarship if they meet certain spe- cified requirements. These include: three years attendance at C.H.S., good scholarship, need for financial aid, fine character, contribution to school life, and planned matriculation at a degree-grant- ing institution. The mammoth job of publicizing these schol- arships is in the hands of Mr. R. Granger, Mr. Robert W. Ostermeyer, Sr., President of the Home Office of the Pennsylvania Industrial Chemical Corporation, is responsible for the school’s re- ceiving the designated funds each year. Mr. Martin Fricke of Drexel Institute is on the Dean’s list and is working for his Ph.D., in Science. Mr. John Young, a Howard University pre-medical graduate, is a resident at Hahne- mann Hospital. Donald Sparks, a noted local lawyer, works for Mr. Sapovits, Solicitor of the School Board. These young men have created successful places in society for themselves as a result of the aid given them by PICCO. Miss Beldecos and Miss Harlan, both teachers at Chester High School, were recipients of PICCO scholarships. Without the aid of PICCO, it is certain that many capable students could not com- plete their education. The Future Teachers of America Club was or- ganized in 1944 by Dr. Leah Jordan. The purpose of this organization is to enable students who wish to be teachers to become acquainted with the programs and history of educators. Proving their ability as fu- ture teachers, they assist the faculty and teachers from other schools in maintaining class functions. This organization headed by Miss Harlan is one of the school’s most active organizations. Each year the FTA raises a sizable sum by means of profit- able activities such as the sale of Chrysanthemums for the Thanksgiving game and cake sales. The funds raised from these activities go towards its scholar- ship fund and on Commencement Night this organ- ization awards a scholarship to the most promising student. First Row: B. Taylor, L. Ray Rogers, president of this industrious group, directs the activities and provides capable leadership. Because he is seriously planning to pursue the field of electronics, this position has proved to be a fitting one. There is in the making at Chester High School a potent army of All-Americans who can tackle, throw, and run. What a team! Inspired by this year’s performance for the Varsity squad, the succeeding team is eager to emulate its pre- decessors. With Mr. Caia, Mr. Udovich, Mr. Bodds, and Mr. Beissel providing expert coaching, this objective is sure to be materialized. The hustling, driving football team of Chester High School has developed into a formidable host of bruisers. This was brought about through the know-how of Coach Anthony Caia and Assistant Coach John Udovich. This year the club romped to an improved 4-6 rec- ord, and would have done better had fate spared them the injury of several key players. Running, running, always running, never stopping . . . that is, until they cross the finish line. Whether exhibiting their Mercurian or Herculian qualities, Chester High School's track and cross country teams sjiow their re- markable strength and stamina. The track team, coached by Mr. Sholly, Mr. Russell, Mr. Caia, and Mr. Udovich, is an example of thorough conditioning, which is enhanced by the enthusiasm that these boys put forth. Such events as the Penn Relays, Lower Merion Relays and Delco Champion- ship keep them training arduously to bring home a victory. The fleet feet of Mr. Reigner’s cross- country team are another asset to Chester High. This year, as in former years, they have brought honor to the school, proving their ability to display sportsmanship. Although track is not one of the favorite spectator sports, these boys' work will have not been in vain; for the harder they have trained in high school, the better their chances are of making the 1964 Olympic team.
