Carroll will never die. Her influence in training and guiding young people towards worthwhile pursuits and character development was immeasurable. Its impact was too great to express ade- quately in words. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Miss Carroll earned her MA. degree at Michigan University, where she became a member of Pi Lambda Theta, the national honorary educational fraternity for women. In 1935 she began to serve as an adviser for the Annual, and in 1937 took over full responsibility for both the Annual and the Welcome. Under her wise and patient guidance, these two publications won many top awards in state-wide competition. From 1938 on she was active in the Pennsylvnia Scholastic Press Association serving as vice president for two years and president up to the time of her death. In March, 1951, she received a distinguished citation from Temple University for her outstanding leadership in school press work. Her nomina- tion came from her colleagues in the field of school journalism in recognition of her constant, brilliant service. When the light of a candle is snuffed out, the circle of light that it spreads is goneg but when Mary V. Carroll died, she left in the hearts of her students and co-workers a lasting light of ambition, constancy, patience, hard work, and success. To Mary V. With that definition as the keynote, we have inaugurated a continuous, dynamic curriculum improvement program at Chester High. Composed of seven courses of study, Chester High's educa- tional program is designed to meet the needs of each and every participating student. In this manner, the demands of the community for intelligent, capable citizens can be best filled, for here, at Chester High, the student is able to obtain all the factual, practical and social education needed to enter a wait- ing community. 'I'he scientific phase presupposes a liking for mathematics and science, whereas the academic phase probes into the mys- teries of the foreign tongue. Pl-XRLEZ-VOUS FRAN- CAIS? Miss Margaret Mul- doon asks. Certain basic subjects are required for admission to college. This course provides an extensive training program in these par- ticular subjects. Research and experimenta- tion are a part of this curriculum which includes studies in science, higher mathe- matics, and develops versatility in linguistics. MRS. WEAVER discusses family relations with Betty Raughley, Foster Webster, Natalie Spector, and Oscar Key. KEYS TO SUCC Chester High maintains a fine commer- cial department. Extensive training is avail- able in four specific divisions: secretarial selling, accounting, and general commercial. Elementary training begins in the sopho- more year and follows the same pattern for the four branches. Specialized study in the respective divisions begins in the junior year, and all commercial students are scheduled for the fields of their choice. 1 ESS The distributive education course is offered in the senior year. Students who choose this course remain in school through- out the morning, their afternoons are spent in local business houses. Assistance is rendered to graduating commercial students by the Placement Bureau, which aids students in securing positions with prominent local industries and firms. ASPIRING TYPISTS study correct techniques in the hope of obtaining top posi- tions. SENIOR STUDENTS acquire valuable experience operat- ing the school switchboard, Chester High is one of the few schools in this area that provides this opportunity. SENIOR STUDENTS become acquainted with the various business mcrchines in office practice clcrss under the care and supervision of Miss Helms. HERE DREAMS TAKE ON REALITY In the early days ot Chester High School, art, as a rule, pertained to the prettier things in life and a few equally refined forms of drawing for the young ladies. Through the years, however, it has come to cover all visible and tangible forms from the study of architecture, to the creation of a fine piece of jewelry and connects all studies of art as closely and naturally as possible with other lines of work and forms of activities. The art major course of Chester High i ,,., School is now primarily designed lor those students who are interested in all phases of art and wish to continue their studies in the field after graduation. Students receive train- ing in commercial art, interior decoration. and in graphic and fine art. Minor electives for art appreciation are also available. Art majors submit work in such projects as Scholastic Art Awards, and look forward to their annual art exhibit held at the Dela- ware County National Bank. This preview is designed to aid the students in determining whether or not he is qualified to enter one of the seven shops in the vocational curriculum. Ever since its organization in 1934, Student Council has worked toward the promotion of better school spirit, a more direct cooperation between teachers and students, and the encouragement of greater participation in school activities. Council sponsors an all-school election program, dances, pep rallies, collections for charitable organizations and needy families, clean-up cam- paigns, and other projects which will benefit our students and our school. The Student Council is composed of three governing groups-the Senate, which is composed of five council officers and ten senators, the Court, which consists of six members who, like the senators are elected by the student body: the House of Representatives, which is made up of two members chosen from each homeroom. After years of preparation, each senior will be given an opportunity to prove himself a competent citizen. In this important role, the knowledge and skills acquired in school years manifest themselves, thus, offering the well- equipped person new realms of opportunity. It is Chester High School that has done the most for the graduat- ing student. Here, he received the key to every phase of adult living. Classroom knowledge is only a small part of the educa- tion he has received, for he was given the opportunity to experience all the customs and practices of social living. Now, however, each senior must leave the protection of the Alma Mater and bravely face the world-a complete, well-rounded personality. This color- ful outfit, composed of 96 members including 73 instrumentalists, ll majorettes, 7 flag twirlers, and 5 color guards, is always certain to make a hit with any crowd. All spectators at a CHS football game may see them forming elaborate formations such as a Stairway to the Stairs or watch the popular majorettes and flag twirlers, dressed in their warrior feathers, doing a spectacular Indian dance. One formation that always draws applause from the crowd is the Charleston, played and danced by this outfit. 'I'his year, in addition to football games. the band paraded in the city l'lallowe'en, Memorial, Firemen's Parade, and the Chester Pike Kiwanis Festival. The concert band also participated in the All-City Instrumental Concert, the Crozer Lawn Pete as well as presenting their own Spring Concert. FLOYD DAVIS edzto THE WELCCME The school newspaper, the Welcome, is published every Wednesday in the Chester Times by a student staff of editorial, news, sports, and special features reporters. It is the job of these students to keep not only the school but also the entire city informed of CHS happenings. This year at the Pennsylvania School Press Association conference held in Reading, the Welcome, as in past years, trotted off with a first award, in addition many reporters were acclaimed for their excellent writing ability. Our advisor, Mary V. Carroll, who was president of the PSPA, was unable to attend the convention because of a serious illness. She died here at home while her staff was still receiving awards at Reading. For the first time in the history of the Welcome, repre- sentatives were sent to the Columbia Scholastic Press Asso- ciation convention held in New York. This publication requires a great deal oi work on the part of the staff members. Therefore, in the junior year, each homeroom elects a representative to the Annual staff. Thus a group of interested seniors is obtained. Chester may be proud of its yearbook, a first award winner in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Press Association contest for many years. The Annual, under the wise supervision of its past adviser, Mary V. Carroll, has brought honor and distinction to Chester High. 'I'hen came a series of four defeats which included losing to Wilmington 18-13 in the last 15 seconds. This heartbreaker was followed by defeats by Upper Darby and Norristown with the score being 13-6 and 18-U. Chester broke out of its slump at Atlantic City. The team played its finest game there only to lose in the last 40 seconds 18-13. Then the Clippers snapped back by upsetting Chelten- ham 27-13. Getting by Abington l3-6, the team was beaten by Lower Merion 33-14. 'I'he season ended on a happy note as Media was defeated 33-6. Chester's Varsity football squad under the direction of coach Dick Madison completed the season with a record of four wins and five losses. Tackle Walter Spangenburg was elected team captain for the season. Fullback Ioe Soroka won the Lion's club most valuable player award. Backs Soroka, Towns. Williams, and Lee lead Chester's ground attack, while the regular quarterback Clayton threw the ball to the ends Dublisky, Komarnicki and VanPatton. In the line, Spangenburg, Arnbrosino, Caldrone, and Wallis played great ball. Starting off with a rush the Little Clip- pers won seven straight games before drop- ping a game to Abington. They finished in a. tie for second place in a tough Section I. Even with 5 key players moved up to the Varsity during the season, the I. V.'s managed to win 15 games while losing 4. The Little Clippers won the I. V. Fine shooting on the forward line was executed by Doris Light- cap, Ianet Maddox, Callie Miller, Iane Collins, Ioan Landis, and Alazada Tanner. Captain Willie Maudlin starred all season along with Doris Nelson, Ioyce Hamilton, and Dora Arrington. Under the fine leadership of coaches, Lilyan Wright and Leona Sealey, the spirited jayvee team Won seven games and lost one to Eddystone by one point. Sammie lessee, Leah Lewis, Nettie Iohnson, Peggy Palo, Syrena Heyman, Barbara McCormick, and Gerry Goldsby are expected to move up to fulfill varsity positions next year. Under the excellent guidance of Coach Leona Sealey, the potent frosh team enjoyed an undefeated season. Captain Sarah Lou Peck and Kim Manship were high scorers in eight games played.
