Pre- viously she was in charge of sophomore dues, the hat, ring, and Junior Prom committees. This June, Hrs. Dacey plays a prominent part in three graduaticms. She supervises the exercise of the Class of '51 ,and she attends, as a proud mother, the graduation ceremonies of her daughter Patsy at' St. Roberts School and those of her son Jackie at St. James High School, where her second son, Eddie, is a junior. THAT THEY LEARN THOSE THINGS The pre-vocational course offered to freshman boys is a stepping stone to the seven vocational courses open to them. In order that these students may choose the trade for which they are best qualified. they receive nine weeks of training in each of four shops: wood, print, machine, and mechan- ical drawing. Here they are given a general understanding of tools. materials. and pro- cesses used in industrial fields. ln addition they take related subjects. ...J Potential machinists. Will they qualify? The game of printing can be u vocation or nn uvocznlion. Contrary to the dual system of Euro- pean education. which stresses training for professions. the American system offers high- ly specialized courses to prepare boys for industry. Experience is the best teacher is the motto of the vocational course, students of which learn their trades by using modern machinery valued at much in excess of one- half million dollars. In fact new machines were installed this year, of which lathes, boring and milling machines are only a few. The use of modern equipment, how- ever. is but one example of the progress of vocational education. Today students choose from seven courses: machinery, electricity, patternmaking, building maintenance. auto body and fender. auto mechanics and ma- chine design. With the present training. in peace time and in war time, a large percentage of the boys are placed in excellent positions in industry both before and at graduation.
