Into The MELTING Published by the Senior Class CHESTER HIGH SCHOOL Chester Pennsylvania of Chester High School have gone the cus- toms, culture, traditions and ideals of the 35 nationalities that are represented in the faculty of 109 members and the student body of 1834. THE ANNUAL Our Purpose...TO ACT, THINK Through the understanding and appreciation of one another's prob- lems and with respect for the opinions and beliefs of all, both faculty and students work, play—live—together. Assimilation of the contribu- tions provided by two worlds—the old and the new—is daily enriching the lives of those within the portals of Chester High. A pupil enters as raw material, but he leaves, with his diploma, as a part of the finished product. An important ingredient used in the mixing process is Democracy. Loyal to our school, our foam, our country. AND FEEL AS ONE Our Strength LIES IN OUR WHAT’S IN A NATIONALITY Four-score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. COMMON BELIEFS . . . Thus we do not distinguish our classmates according to nationalities. Rather do we measure them in terms of their contributions and achievements. Pupils are rostered according to courses. Assemblies and study halls comprise cross-sections of the student body, enabl- ing freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to gather to- gether. Friends enjoy one another's company while passing WE SHARE A MUTUAL RESPECT Charles A. Giles, Viee-Prineipel; Karl E. Agen, Principal. Our administrators are master chefs, capable of seeing that the important ingredi- ents within our melting pot — all pupils — are well-seasoned and that they neither spoil nor boil over. Mr. Karl E. Agan, principal, came to Chester High School from P.M.C. as vice principal in 1935 and became principal in 1941. His degrees include A.B., Union College; M.S., University of Pennsylvania; Honorary M.A., Pennsylvania Military College. He is a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Delta Upsilon. Mr. Agan is president of the Chester Community Council, the purpose of which is to bring about cooperation of all people and coordination of all efforts for the improvement and betterment of the City of Chester. Mr. Charles A. Giles, vice principal, is president of the Exchange Club of Chester. He received his B.S. and M.S. in administration from the University of Pennsylvania, where he is affiliated with Theta Xi fraternity. He also boasts a gold track shoe and a Varsity P . Mr. Giles joined the CHS faculty in 1939 and became vice principal in 1947. mm FOR OUR ADMINISTRATORS SARAH P. HOLCROFT Guidance Head Sophomore Class Coordinator CLARA P. Pupils find variety in the general course. Commercials may enroll for secretarial, sell- ing, accounting, or general commercial work. Boys interested in industry have eight vocational choices, provided they do creditable work as general shop freshmen. Art major is offered to students desiring an art career. Homemaking trains girls inter- ested in foods and clothing. WITH A VARIETY OF SUBJECTS Kennedy is president of the Art Club, which is open students, regardless of their course. ART Some Of Our Inherited Artistic traits transmitted from their ancestors are apparent in the different types of work produced in the art de- partment. One may major in the field for four years or select electives for appreciation. Here are shown students learning to sketch, to paint, and to work with clay. With Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis and Miss Lillian Stalker, supervising, fine arts, advertising, commercial art, design, and illustration are fields of art to be explored. 68 Talents ARE REVEALED IN HOMEMAKING Here develops an interchange of ideas in patterns and recipes. Clothing ma- jors like the visits to department stores and factories, where they supplement their knowledge of clothing construction and textiles. Many career opportunities materialize for those pursuing this course. The homemaking department also conducts a nursery school. Top to bottom one sees clothing majors at work, foods majors preparing lunch, tiny tots engrossed in their story hour. Like stuffed olives—a gift from Italy? Foods majors can promise a well planned, well balanced meal. We Make Plans FOR NEW WORLDS COMMERCIAL Students with commercial interests may enter one of four fields: secretarial, sales, accounting, or general. This year, a course in distributive education has been added for seniors. Half the day is given over to theory; the other half is spent working in shops through- out the city. Top: Mary Mac Indoe pounds a type- writer Juniors interested in selling prepare for the course in distributive education. Above: Miss Elaine Farmer discusses cash register procedure with Julienne Wooters and Rose Lerman. Below: secretariats in Miss Alda Adams' shorthand class seem to be slaving. Senior secretariats have three weeks of practical experience in business and professional offices in the city. Thus, jobs at graduation are assured. In fact, the supply of CHS commercials is ess than the demand. OF OUR OWN MAKING COLLEGE Academic and scientific courses followed by the scholars of Greece and Rome are offered in the college preparatory curriculum. These divi- sions, leading to a C.P. diploma, prepares stu- dents for entrance into college, where they major in the field of their desire. Inasmuch as college requirements differ, students select and follow in high school a course of study that will enable them to enter the college of their choice. In the upper pletur Dr. Jordan's speech classes sweat it out for forty-five minutes. Nancy Reist and Leona Smith, college preps, study college catalogues in the office of M'ss Edna S. Emmott, adviser of girls. At the bottom, Mr. James DeRose’s chemistry class derives benefits from visual aids. ASPIRING YET PRACTICAL, We GENERAL In the general course, pupils obtain a broad and general education. Those not wishing to attend college may elect this course and then select subjects in which they are interested. Often pupils who find they are not suited to the course they have originally selected, switch to general. Above, Mr. Slezak who is also football line coach, is trying to put across the fundamentals of general science to a group of freshmen. This class meats five periods a week. Above, Mrs. Hayes, substituting for Mr. Lannen, keeps up her good work with a general math class. Opposite, Mrs. Keagle has a class in general English. The English learned is practical and needed by the students in whatever career they decide to follow. Prepare For A LIVELIHOOD GENERAL SHOP General shop provides ninth grade boys with ex- periences which enable them to decide on their voca- tional choices. Nine weeks are spent in each of four shops: wood, sheet metal, machine, print. The boys also study English, civics, math and science. After a year of general shop they are eligible for the vocational course, provided they meet requirements. Below, boys try their hand at soldering in the sheet metal shop. If they like this work and show ability, they may major in this field in the 10th, llth, and 12th grades. In the woodshop, boys receive a general basic training in wookwork and in the handling of tools. They learn how to use each machine and, if they show aptitude, may further their study in wood in the IOth, llth, and 12th grades. At the side, we see boys spending their nine weeks in the print shop. We Strive TO KEEP OUR SENSE OF In the electric shop Vernon Booth and Edward Trojan display practice while Hank Kulikowski, a D. P. from Poland, brushes up on theory. Boys in the machine shop learn to work many of the machines that they will actually use in industry. The machine design class gives an intensive train- ing in the field of drafting. Many boys go into tkis vocation after they graduate without addi- tional study. VALUES IN A CHAOTIC WORLD VOCATIONAL In paHernmaking, boys learn to mold and make patterns. They also receive training in woodwork and have turned out some exceptionally fine pieces of furniture. The artisans of old would be proud of these boys enrolled in the vocational department. Accepted at the completion of their freshman year on the basis of interest and skill, these artisans of the 20th century have for their use the most modern equipment. The boys spend half their day in shop and half in related subjects. Future automotive mechanics come from this shop. Students learn to take a car apart and put it together. There are no parts left over, Our clubs ADD MUCH TO THE FLAVOR OF SCHOOL LIFE Those outstanding in Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service are elected to National Honor Society. The Publications Board assists in producing the football programs and governs the policies of the publications. A Fellowship House bookshelf is maintained by Fellowship Club. Key Club —affiliated with Kiwanis, sponsors the March of Dimes drive. The Linguist Club comprises students interested in Languages. LIKE OUR FOREBEARS, We Prepare STUDENT COUNCIL Traffic rules are enforced by monitors, who have regular posts. Chronic violaters are brought before the court, which pronounces sentence. Last spring, Chester was host to the Suburban Stu- dent Council Association. All school elections are sponsored by Student Coun- cil. Potential candidates obtain petitions, a party backer, make campaign speeches, post their slogans throughout the school. The entire student body registers, and on election day goes to the polls, where they vote, as do the citizens of the United States, by secret ballot. The four wins came over Haverford, Upper Darby, Ridley Park, and Lower Merion. The last two wins came via the upset rout, stopping a Parker win streak of seventeen straight, and topping the Ardmore Aces, who outweighed the Chester line by 30 pounds per man. Losses were at the hands of the Ridley Township Raiders, Coatesville, Norristown, Eddystone, and Abington. The Raiders, who had an undefeated season, took to the air to set the Clippers on their heels; and Coatesville rolled in with a powerful eleven to lace Chester. Eddystone scored an upset win, and Abington topped the Chesterites, 15-2. Norristown had a tough time to edge the Clippers, 7-0. Day, keeping the Chester lads scoreless. The game was played on a mud-riddled field, climaxing the 1948 grid campaign. Pepper IN OUR GRIDDERS Highlighting the 1948 grid campaign were the stirring upset victories over Ridley Park and Lower Merion. The Clippers had never lost to the Parkers on the PMC gridiron, and the Red and White had not lost a contest in seventeen starts, laying two streaks on the line. Chester cashed in on a second period drive and held on to a 6-0 margin for victory. The Ardmore Aces came to Chester with wins over the Orange and Black for five seasons in suc- cession. Chester and Lower Merion battled on a muddy turf and in a downpour of rain. Joe Cresta intercepted a first period pass and raced forty yards into the end zone. Don Davis then added the all important extra point. Lower Merion came back for a six pointer in the second period, but the try for the extra point was wide; and the count remained 7-6. The Clippers made two goal line stands to stave off last minute rally by the Aces. A HARD SEASON---BUT--- Before playing their games on Saturdays, the Clipper footballers had to go through stiff work- outs during the preceding days of the contests. The coaches had the boys doing calisthenics, running the hundred-yard dash, scrimmaging among themselves and with other schools, and working on the tackling dummy. The Chester High grid coaches worked had during the past season to build a crack squad. Although the squad did not turn in an impressive record, future prospects on the gridiron are brighter. During the last, campaign the Subur- ban Class A Football Conference was formed Participating teams were Chester, Lower Merion, Abington, and Haverford. Kneeling: The Chester jayvees did not have so good a season as expected, but they did show improve- ment under the combined efforts of Coaches Jim Vermeychuk and Bob Grainger. They battled Upper Darby, Eddystone, and Abington to ties but lost six games. Spirit was low with few fel- lows coming out. Poor pass defense on the part of the members of the team played a big factor in the losses. Coach Robert Grainger led the freshman squad to a fair season on the grid- iron. The newcomers also scrimmaged the jay- vees quite frequently. Bob Shinn demonstrates the proper stance for a game. GOOD BALL PLAYED Jim Harper, Chester Halfback, is hauled down in the Lower Merion game. The Clippers went on to upset the Ardmore Aces by a 7-6 count. Chester and Haverford jump high into the air to gain pos- session of the ball. Under the capable supervision of Coach Dick Madison, Chester High's Varsity basketball team closed a fair season on the court with 7 wins and 14 losses. The squad got off to a good start in their court campaign with a very impressive 45-20 victory over Glen-Nor. However, the wind was soon taken out of the Clippers' sails as they went into a tailspin. St. James High invaded the Chester gym during the latter part of December to recapture the city Championship with a rousing triumph. The Orange and Black squad finished sixth in Section I. Norristown again captured the crown for the third consecutive season. Prospects for next year's squad are brighter. Chester's Clippers advanced as far as the semi- finals in the 27th Annual Kiwanis Tournament be- fore bowing to Upper Darby, 58-51, the eventual tourney winners. In other games Chester topped Springfield and Ridley Park but lost to Eddystone in the Consolation game. Our Speedy Courtiers Pictured left is the Varsity Court squad. Paul Dixon tales a two-hand jump shot from the corner. Under the tutelage of Bob Forwood, the little Clippers ran winning streaks of four and six before being stopped by Ridley Township and Norristown in very close ball games. The Chesterites won out over the St. James' quintet for the junior city crown, 39-26. In Section I play against junior op- ponents, the jayvees had but a few close contests, nipping Cheltenham on a half court shot by Tony Cornacchio as time ran out and losing a tough ball game to Norristown, 22-21. when the Chester shots wouldn't drop as time also ran out in that game. Under the direction of Coaches Hal Brewster and Bob Forwood, the boys seemed to have the ability and fight that the coaches wanted of them. With track mentor, Jack Crawford, keeping a watchful eye, the Orange and Black cindermen had a good season on the field. The boys ran in the Inquirer Invitational meet in Philadelphia during January. At the meet Benny Wright equalled the record for high school runners in the 50-yard dash. The Orange and Black X-Coun- try squad had a very successful season, being topped only once. Don Fryer was harrier captain. Fryer finished first in the meets, second in the District I meet, and sixth in the state against 175 con- testants. Cross Counfry runners are Coach Craw- ford, Kinder, Soifer, O'Brien, Cowdrighf, Harris, Brown, Coiro, Eddy, Fryer, Nel- son, Anemone, Moore, Mareavage, Davis, Walker, Eddy. The thinclads again closed a good sea- son on the cinders as well as in the field events. Last year eight members of the squad represented Chester in the State Championships. The 1949 Annual staff extends its sincere appreciation to Edward Ursprung, of Campus Publishing, and to Charles S. Moulder, of Merin Studios, both of Philadelphia, in recognition of the friendly interest, coopera- tion, and personal assistance they have given in the publication of this yearbook. The work this year has functioned very smoothly, perhaps, because of the fact that the staff selected co-editors, Francis Butler and Eleanor Wahowski. Therefore, the responsibilities were more evenly divided, thus expediting the production of the book.
