J tu Chester Zownship Schools The consolidated school building at Chester Center was the outgrowth of a need that had existed since the old building at Keystone was conden:ied for high school purposes in 1919. Actual construction work was not begun until the spring of 192Z by contractors, Gordon and Reiff, of Liberty Center, under the direction of Architect Everett I. Brown of Bluffton. Labor troubles hindered the work considerably during the first season, but by the time winter set in, the building had been enclosed and roofed. Work was resumed early in the spring of 1923, and the building was completed and occupied for school purpos- es on September 24, 1923. At that time, students from ten other Chester Town- ship Schools were consolidating into one school which was called Chester Center. Those ten one-room schools were: McCallister, Slocum, Noe, Red, Chester, Gavin, Maddox, Shields, Five Points, and Keystone. The building was one of the largest and most completely equipped in the county, and one of which the good people of the township were justly proud. The grounds were improved and beautified during the summer of 1924. The iTiembers of the first graduating class were: Doris Arnold, Myrtle Brinnen:ian, Chauncey Ladd, Mary Minnich, Gladys Smith, and Ruth Weaver. The members of the last graduating class are: Rose Abner, Michael Frantz, Cathy Hamilton, Dennis Hendricks, Lee Hilkert, Dedria Johnson, James Johnson, Charlene Katte, Karen Keller, Lamoine Nusbaumer, Jackie Riesen, Mike Sutton, and Judy Walker. During the 1956 school year a nevv ' Agriculture Building was erected near the present Chester Building. In the November election of 1962, the four southern townships of Wells County voted to consolidate their schools. On January 1, 1963, Chester Center, Liberty Center, Jackson Center, and Petroleum became known as the Southern Wells Community Schools. Pleasant thoughts of true fellowship with school mates and faculty, now vivid and seemingly in- delible, will gradually fade and pass. Therefore, we give this in book form--lest we forget. We, the class of 1966, wish to extend our sincere appreciation to those who have iTiade these books possible. May they always stand as tributes to the periods of happiness, joy, cheer, and honorable achieve- ment which the graduates have cherished in their hearts. The State Department of Instruc- tion was re -evaluating each school in the state and requiring immediate changes. Verlice Crosby was elected as trustee to head the school board in the i960 elections. Jim Ogle, Kenneth Kennedy and Ward Showalter were elected to the Chester Advisory Board to help advise on school affairs. In the spring of 1962 the four southern townships of Wells County- - Chester, Jackson, Liberty, and Nottingham re -organized into Southern Wells Community Schools and a new School Board was appointed. Those forming the first Southern Wells Board of Education were Ward Showalter, Charles Day, Donald Williams, and Howard Baker with Lloyd Biberstine chosen as superintendent of the school. Bill Payne, who was named principal in 1957, continued as the Ches- ter principal through the 1965-66 school year. Soon after Chester became a part of Southern Wells, a Ball State Survey Team headed by Dr. Merle Strom was called in to make a study of the educational needs of the school district. Pictured below is the sur- vey team and a community discussion session. 45 Many high points throughout the school year have been anxiously awaited by Chester studeiits The elementary children dress for their annual Halloween party in the gymnasium. Preceding the party, they would parade through the high school class rooms to be viewed by the students. The Student Council scheduled special convocations during the year which were enjoyed by the entire student body. Pictured below is Mr. Hansen and his bird show. Junior class members nervously awaited their stage debut in the annual Junior Class Play. Then as they readied for their Senior Class Play, they were old pros and would inform the play director how it should be done. The seniors each year looked forward to their Senior Trip. This annual affair was inaugurated in the late forties and continued through the ' 66 school term. Magazine sales, sock hops, raffles, Christmas card sales, bake sales and other campaigns were used to raise the necessary funds. Pictured below is a group in front of the Nation ' s Capitol Building and in a United States senator ' s office. Athletics have always played a very important part in the Chester educa- tional process. Chester teams continued to battle the opposition throughout the sixties although not winning any tournament crowns. Since the Chester gymnasium was last used for high school games in the mid fifties, it was neces- sary for Chester athletes to play their home games at Roll, Montpelier, Poplar Grove, and Jackson. A feature of the basketball season was the annual Homecoming Game which included the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. This ceremony was begun in 1955 and the following girls were Homecoming Queens: 1966 Karen Keller 1965 Connie Haines 1964 Judy Wood 1963 Judy Musselman 1962 Sheryl Friar 1961 Nancy Beavans I960 Marilyn Crosby 1959 Carole Canady 1958 Barbara Dalrymple 1957 Karen Mounsey 1956 Carole Myers 1955 Myrna Sue Ogle 47 Another feature of the Homecoming Game was the special guests who came home. Pictured below are Chester Center Coaches who were in attendance at the 1964 affair. Ralph Huddlestoii, Clete Johnson, Eldon Games, Bill Payne, Owen Wemhoff, Dave Craig, Keith Showalter, Al Spandau, Bob Baumgardner, and Oscar Diehm. Also, the oldest graduates in attendance at the affair were presented gifts. Pictured below is Principal, Bill Payne, presenting gifts to Mrs. Charles Wolfe and Robert Shively. Chester students were privileged to have two guest students from foreign coun- tries during two school terms. Pictured below are Matti Vasama of Finland (1960) and Hans Ebel of Germany (1965). 48 The Chester School is indebted to Dr. Paul Burns for the generosity and services accorded the graduates for the past nineteen years. Mr. Burns has awarded scholarships to the girl and boy with the highest scholastic average for the four years of high school. The recipients of these scholarships were: 1966 Judy Walker Lamoine Nusbaumer 1965 Marilyn Gaiser Bill Morris 1959 Carolyn Canady Dee Harold 1953 Norma Woodard Paul Zimmerman 1964 Judy Wood Dick Shannon 1958 Rose Marie Blair Richard Watkins 1952 Carolyn Musselman Robert Dallon 1963 Judy Musselman Ben Hamilton 1957 Eleanor Velasquez Jerry Gearheart 1951 Marjorie Ford John Reff 1962 Mary Price Charles Sills 1956 Carole Myers Tom Wamsley Pei Rol 1950 ;gy Davidson )ert Dalton 1961 Nancy Beavans Kent Roush 1955 Nancy Blevins Ronnie Clamme 1949 Betty Williams Joe Gilbert 1960 Marilyn Crosby Brady McCoy 1954 Mary Farlow John Williams 1948 Helen Carnes Billie Fuller 49 This painting was presented to the school by Mrs. John Nestleroad in memory of her granddaughter, Deborah Harris, and her daughter, Susan Harris, who were victims of the Palm Sunday tornado which struck Chester Township April 4, 1965. We also dedicate this miemoriam to all deceased graduates of Chester Township. IN MEMORIRM 50 s c H E AT T S E R I G H 51 F7 P!? In the 195Z election Thurl Rogers was elected trustee to head the Chester School Board. Joe Pond, Olin Gilbert and Charles Crosby were elected to the Advisory Board. Then in the 1956 election, Glen Jamision was elected trustee with Ward Showalter, Vick Mounsey and Kenneth Kennedy elected to the Advisory Board. Huber Settle, who became principal in 1941, was principal of the school until the fall of 1957. William Payne, former Indian coach, succeeded Mr. Settle as principal of the school. Since the school did not have a secretary, senior girls who were majoring in the business field worked in the school office one period each day. Pictured below are a group of office workers. Sue Michael, Emma Hunt, Marilyn Ford, Jean Cheesman, Mary Farlow, Helene Schortgen and Cynthia Apt. 55 Students also worked in the cafeteria. Most students enjoyed this particular duty since this entitled the workers to seconds. Many films and other visual aids were involved in the educational process each year. Pictured below is a group of film projector operators. The library facilities were quite limited at the school. Students were permitted to use the Bluffton Library and the Bookmobile which visited our school each week. Students manned the library located at the rear of study hall. Pictured below is a group of student librarians. 56 Chester basketball teams played their home games in their own gym until the late forties. Then many games were shifted to other local gyms due to the small floor and seating capacity of the Chester gym. The last high school basketball game played in the Chester gymnasium was during the 1954-55 season. The Chester B team under the guidance of Bill Payne won their own invitational tournament. Robert Baumgardner led his 1956-57 team to the championship of the Montpelier Blind Tourney. Pictures of the 1954-55 and the 1956-57 teams are shown below. te iv rr The school paper and the yearbook were published by the Journalism class which consisted of seniors. The first yearbook was published during the 1924-25 school year and was called the Memento. As the 1940 ' s rolled around the Chester School was still standing but shaking from the previous ten years of wear and tear. Wayne Lee, who became the principal in the fall of 1938, was the principal through the 1941 school year. Huber C. Settle became prin- cipal in the fall of 1941 and remained through the 1940 ' s. Everett Carnes was reelected to his second term as trustee in 1940 and served through 1944 as the school ' s chief administrator. Advisory Board members serving with Mr. Carnes were Harold Carter, Joe Pond and Jess Miller. Then in the election of 1944, Edward Cochran was elected to head the Chester School board. Also, elected to the advisory board were Ed Carmichael, Leslie Hamilton and Charles Crosby. In the 1948 election Edward Cochran was re-elected to head the school board. Charles Crosby, Herman Osborn and Win Noe were elected as advisory board niembers to help with the administration of school affairs. Chester athletic teams were doing quite well up to this time, but sectional crowns had eluded them. As the new decade rolled around things were about to change as far as tournaments were concerned. Keith Showalter, a 1933 Chester graduate, was coaching the Indians during the 1939-40 season and the drought came to an end as the Indians beat Liberty Center Z8-27 to win their first Sectional Crown. 62 Left to right: Principal Wayne Lee, Ralph Gilbert, Ernest Cochran, Eugene Couch, Ward Showalter, Keith Showalter - Coach. FIRST ROW: Wayne Hamilton, Arden Kunkel, Bill Carnes, Bob Rogers, Elmer Bennett, Calvin Lincoln. The ball used by the Champion Indians is shown at the right. 63 Cletus Johnson followed Keith Showalter as coach of the Chester Indians, and led them to their first County Championship in the 1941-42 season. School officials were unable to find licensed coaches at this time so the Chester agriculture teacher, Oscar Diehm, took over the coaching duties. Mr. Diehm did quite well as he led his 1943-44 team to the Wells County Championship. Pictured below is the 1943-44 team. f P f F. Meyer, D. Reff, H. Meyers, T. FIRST ROW: Bill Pearson Wamsley. SECOND ROW Coach Diehm, M. Simpson, L. Bennett, J. White, B. Myers, R Carmichael, H. C. Settle. Again the following year Coach Diehm led the Indians and this time they won the Sectional tournament. FRONT ROW: Paul Carnes, Dean Mounsey, Alfred Pearson, Bob Murray, and Bill Pearson. After World War II was over Coach Diehm returned to his former job of agri- culture teacher. Since Mr. Diehm took over coaching due to necessity, he had one particular slogan that he used to give the boys more drive. When the boys left the huddle to start the game, he would state Remember Pearl Harbor. Mr. Diehm will always be associated by his former players with this slogan. Albert Spandau replaced Mr. Diehm and led the Warriors to Sectional Cham- pionship in 1946-47 and a County Championship in 1947-48. Pictured below are these teams. FIRST ROW: L. Huffman, B. Riggs, E. During World War II rationing of gasoline and tires caused a great handicap on students as far as transportation was concerned. Unless you had extra coupons, a bicycle, your thumb or your own two feet came in very handy for transportation. The econoniy of the county was moving very slowly as the 3 0 ' s entered upon the scene. The Great Depression was in full swing and was keenly felt all over the country. Chester students and their families felt the money pinch as well as anyone else. Although money was quite scarce, and luxur- ies at a minimum, this didn ' t dampen the enthusiasm and spirits of the iTiany students walking around Chester High halls. T. P. Charles was the school principal through the 1930-31 school year. Then in the fall of 1931 Hugh Tate took over the reigns of the school and was principal through the 1934 school year. H. R. Brunegraff was the principal during the 1934-35 year, and he was replaced by Hobart Black in the fall of 1935. Mr. Black remained as principal until the fall of 1937, and then Wayne Lee finished out as principal through the 3 0 ' s. John Osborn was elected trustee and served through 1932 with Carl Huffman, James Ogle, and Herschel Gilbert as his advisory board. In the 1932 election Calvin Shadle was elected trustee. Cleophas Myers, Francis Gilbert, and Curtis Arnold were elected to the advisory board. Mr. Arnold died during his term of office and was replaced by James Thomas. In the 1936 election, Everett Carnes was elected trustee of Chester Township. Those selected as Advisory Board members were Joe Pond, Harold Carter and Omar Smith. Chester athletic teams were very active as they participated in basket- ball, Softball, and track. The Indians won their first tourney in 1936 when they won the Montpelier Blind Tournamient. The first was written in the fall of 1923 and is as follows: In the galleries of memory, There are pictures bright and fair But the ones of Chester High School Are the brightest ones that are there. Alma Mater, how we love thee, With a love that ne ' ar can fade And v e feel we owe a debt to you That never can be paid. Then in the fall of 1936 the students desired to change the song and under the leadership of Dorothy Burns the following song was arranged and was used through the school year 1966. Cheer, cheer for old Chester High. Grab up the ball and throw it through the goal. While our fans sit watching near, Oh, yell like Indians while you ' re here. Whether the score be less than theirs; Baskets will ring from everywhere. While our Indian Braves are playing Better to win this game. 74 Chester students were also doing fine in other acaden iic and extra curricu- lar activities. In the Wells County Safety Contest, Chester dominated the affair and won the huge trophy. Warren Adsit won the contest in 1936 and 1937 and Marianna Nusbaunner won in 1938. Betty Schmidt won a very nice trophy for the school as she won the W. C. T. U. Contest in 1938. Chester School received another nice trophy in 1943 as Clara Burns won the top journalism trophy for the district. Chester Township has been very fortunate in securing willing, sincere, and patient men as school bus drivers throughout the years. This was a big, modern constructed building hous- ing grades 1 through 12. Distinction came to the town of Keystone through sports. In the early 1900 ' s the Keystone football team was unbeatable and the basketball team won the State High School Championship in 1901 by defeating Muncie. There was no State Athletic Association at this time and games were played mostly by invitation. All reports stale that Muncie residents were a little unruly after the Keystone boys defeated their team and rumors stated that the team was very happy to leave the town in one piece. Basketball was introduced at Keystone, the first in Wells County, by County Superintendent A. R. Huyette, who became principal of the Keystone School. The girls and boys were no different than those of today in many ways. They enjoyed activities, parties, and their vehicles.
