The art of the western film was unique in its time, and the presentation of this craft of cine- matography has carefully been interpreted by East Film Produc- tions with choice illustrations

Though a bit ghastly to some, bringing back memories of some old horror picture, the Annual Cougar Blood Drive was a roaring success. Almost meeting the goal of 200 pints, with a total of 175 donors, the Cougars will have aided those most in need of the life sus- taining fluid. A sweet sense of giving filled the air. even the library's annex was open to do- nors. who enjoyed donuts and orange drink after making their contribution. Of course there was a bit of pain involved (just a pinch), and several sick- ly looking souls who disliked the red bags, but it was all a part of the great cause. When the American Red Cross truck finally rolled off with its pre- cious cargo, the Cougars knew they had done their share. 71

The World Ourside Eosr Gubernororiol Race In November of 1981. New Jersey had a new gov- ernor-elect. Republican Thomas Kean. In a hotly contested election. Kean emerged victorious with one of the smallest margins in the history of the state. Impounding and chaos followed the poll clos- ing. as each side claimed victory. Florio ordered an immediate recount of the votes, but later conceded the election to Kean. As the new governor took office in January, the former one. Governor Bren- dan Bryne. stepped down. As for the national scene. Kean promised to follow suit in some of President Reagan’s policies, but he carefully noted that he would not endorse all of them. The voting front revealed a grand turnout of 2.28 million vot- ers, proving that each vote in a democracy main- tains the power of the people. Jupiter Effect 1982 was just the beginning for the seniors, but some of them thought it would be the end. During the week of March K). all the planets in the solar system were to be arrayed within a ninety degree angle from the sun. Some said the resulting gravita- tional (or ’’Jupiter’ ) effect would unleash fierce solar winds on the Earth resulting in a chain of tidal waves and earthquakes shattering the globe. But, when the fateful day arrived, there were no trem- ors or walls of water . another Doomsday passed. Mosr Eligible Bachelor Marries St. Paul’s Cathedral in London was the site of the most glorious event in British history. Prince Charles was married to Lady Diana Spencer on July 29. 1981 in the wedding of the century. This wed- ding was televised internationally as about 750 mil- lion people celebrated the happy occasion with the Royal family. This extravaganza is also estimated to have cost one million dollars. After the elaborate ceremony, the bride and groom set off on a two week honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean. Subsequently, the happy couple announced Prin- cess Diana’s pregnancy and the royal baby was expected to arrive some time in late spring. Norable Deaths Natalie Wood. Harry Chapin. Paul Lynde. John Belushi. The Philadelphia Bulletin. Egyprion Turmoil The death of a great man brings sorrow to the hearts of the world. Anwar Sadat, long-time Presi- dent and peace maker of Egypt was tragically mur- dered on Wednesday. October 7. 1981 by a small group of crazed military men. Sadat was celebrat- ing the anniversary of the Egyptian victory over Israel during the Yom Kippur War. Although a for- mer foe of Israel. Sadat realized that enough was enough and attempted to secure a lasting peace between the two ancient enemies. As the parades marched on. the deranged soldiers infiltrated the President’s security and assassinated him with their guns and grenades. The wounded were quick- ly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Among those injured was Sadat’s hand-picked suc- cessor. President Mubarak. Firsr Female Justice After Potter Stewart’s decision to retire as a Supreme Court Justice. President Ronald Reagan lived up to his campaign pledge by appointing San- dra Day O’Connor to the high court. She replaced Stewart and became the first woman justice. This nomination had set aside the old tradition of only men serving on the highest court of the land. Judge O’Connor was graduated from Stanford University ranking in the top ten percent of her class. Because she is a conservative Republican, but had supported both abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment in the past, there was a controversy over her nomination. The appointment was finally approved by the Senate. Serving as a Supreme Court Justice, she is described as meticulous and conscientious, ’ and is expected to perpetuate the conservative spirit that presently exists in the Court. All-American Strike One of the major events in the sports world in 1981 was the baseball strike. Lasting from June to August, the strike caused a split season and some frazzled negotiations by Commissioner of Baseball Bowie Kuhn. The players were fighting for a salary hike and for the abolishment of arbitration con- tracts. By the end of a long summer (during which the players were forbidden to use any sports areas associated with their organizations), they settled for a compromise. In spiet of the fact that there were fewer games, they played well into October, when the Dodgers finally got revenge on the Yan- kees in the World Series. 73
