Cherry Hill High School East Kresson Road Cherry Hill, N. J. 08003 Oct. 9, 1981 VOL 16 No. 2 INSIDE Pretenders II ..... p3 Opinion On Spirit Week ..... p2 Mr. Shaw Drama Group Visits East: England Invades America How does a two week tour of California become part of Cherry Hill's history? Ask Mr Nation, head of Easr's Drama Department Yes. California was the destination of East's first touring company E-st's drama exchange program started in 1976 when we were contacted by San Francicso's El Cammo High School, who wanted a base while their touring company was in this area Their idea led to the tour of the 1976 production Godspell After that, the drama exchange program stood sail until last fall, when a talented group of students - the company of Music' Broadway' America! actually went to England They toured from London to Canterbury and found such hospitality everywhere that they invited the drama department of St. Edmund's School in Can- terbury to come here, which they did from September 8 to 12 this year They attended classes here at East. when sightseeing in Philadelphia, and performed at both Cherry Hill East and West Finallv th Fridav hefrwr ! f this country, the warm-hearted East The drama department of East felt the program was a good ex perience for all involved students, giving them a chance to get close to other cultures Because of this they want to put together another touring company for next year What will the destination be- Europe. or a tour m this country? Whatever the destination. East's acton and actresses will doubtless do a great job As Mr Nation puts it. We are very proud to have such a high caliber of talent at East and we are anxious to share these talents and to represent our school and community Has Spirit Week Become Too Competetive? By Albert Park I am not a loud, fiery radical out to beat the system nor am I a Mr Goody- Two-Shoes I am not here to get some- one assassinated or to cause student riots First. I probably would not succeed if I had tried Second. I would not graduate and third, it would do more harm than good The editorial in this section will concern my views on certain events or issues in this school I will try to usebest judgement in being fair and honest Spirit Week began on Monday. September 21 That Monday began like any other typical school week, with sports talk orabout school However, the sounds of students could be heard from the halls, looking for hidden paper cougars In my yean at East. I have never found one (It is not that I did not try. but. thenagain. I can never find my toothbrush whenever I need it) Tuesday, elections were made for Spirit King and Queen Wednesday. The Seniors won the most points in the cake com- petition The ones who won fmt place all-around made the same cake that they did last year, disregarding this years theme I heard about a cakethat was made of cardboard and frosting, and another one that had orange peels and a pickle Thursday, there were hall decorations and costumes I dressed as an American student going to school (Sec SPIRIT WEEK P r 2) One Back, Two Ahead Cougars March Again by Andrea Gross Cherry Hill East almost started this year's football season without a marching band, but fortunately the band is now back and getting ready to perform. Football games would never have been the same without the familiar spirit and beat of the Cougar band The marching band got off to a terrific start this year Their many hours of practicing this summer during band camp paid off when it was announced that they had come in second at the Miss America Parade in Atlantic City. The band and the band front were looking forward to a spirited season Then the trouble began At a practice one afternoon their director. Roy Hough, announced his resignation as head of the Cougar band. Ed- mund Moore, assistant director of the band, and color guard advisors followed this example and also resigned in support of Roy Hough Mr Hough explained to the devastated mem ben of the Cougar band that his resignation was caused by a personal conflict within the music department Thu conflict was thought to be a duagreement over the placement of a new director for the Wind Ensemble The band and the band front now had an imponant decision to make Would they too refuse to perform in s support of Roy Hough or would they try to learn the field show without the guidance of their instructors? Refusal to practice and perform would mean a cancellation of their performance on October 1 at Veteran’s Stadium for a Phillies' game. Luckily the decision did not have to be made. Roy Hough apologized to the school ad- ministration, instrumentalists, color guard, and Cougarettes and resumed hu position as director. The band u now working diligently on their field show eager to start football season, and especially excited to perform at the Phillic's game Career Resource Center Helps In Sorting Facts From Fiction by Debbie Kaplan This year the Guidance Depanment will have a special center for looking at career op- portunities The Careers Resource Center, located in A-ooJ. will have films, cassettes, books and pam- phlets concerning educational and career opportunities If all goes as planned, it will open November 1 The center, coordinated by Mr Sabin and Mrs Zalusky. of the Guidance Department, will be a place where any student can do research concerning their career interests. If used wisely, it should help the students fo determine the programs that they would like to apply for in college , said Mr Sabin He also stated that a counselor and a secretary will be there every period. All a student has to do is get a pass from their counselor before going down. One of the reasons the center is being set up is that there a a new state law requiring each student to complete one semester of career work in order to graduate Many of the departments in school will be using t the center in order tro help students fulfill this requirement.
