CLASS HISTORY Most unconcerned about the proper way of entermg Hlgh School, the Class of 1947, a very large class of 84, seemed to be a l1ttle bew1ldered w1th the routxne We were a l1ttle shy and green about the g11ls, but we seen became acquamted and felt we were part of the school Perhaps we were all frlght ened because we had heard so many thmgs about the m1t1at1on that was gomg to be glven to us by the Sophomores Well, we survlved that m a brave way and proceeded wxth our own busmess of electmg class offlcers We expected that every member present would recelve one vote, but Jerome Burg was chosen Pres1dent, to assxst h1m jack Merkel, V1ce Pres1dent, Marcellme Hmderer, Secretary, and Clara Miller, Treasurer Mr Cameron, our class adv1sor, found he had a hard tlme keepmg us 1n order, but he worked Wlth us patlently, and we spent the rest of the year work1ng and plannmg for the years yet ahead In 1944, we went back to school as mrghty Sophomores Our class off1cers for the year were Ray Kmckerbocker, Pres1dent, Jack Welln1tz, V1ce Pres1dent, MarJor1e Ferguson, Secretary, and Paul Schalble Treasurer Our ma1n mterest was to g1V6 the Freshmen a n1ce, horrrble m1t1at1on, wh1ch we thmk we succeeded m do1ng Later 1n the year we were gxven a return party by the Freshmen We fmzshed our Sophomore year, and soon were waxtmg patxently for our Iumor year to begm Havmg completed our Sophomore year and recover1ng from the summer vacatxon, we returned to old Chelsea Hlgh to start our Jumor year We had many tasks before us tlus year, and wxth M1ss McMahon as our class adv1sor, we 1mmed1ate1y held a class meetmg We elected the followmg offrcers Ray Knlckerbocker Pres1dent Bob Damels, V1ce Pres1dent, Eldean Elsele, Secretary, and Marjone Ferguson Treasurer We cons1dered ourselves very fortunate to recelve our class rmgs before Chrlstmas, mstead of 1n the Spr1ng To make our Treasury r1se to meet the expenses of the junior and Semor Receptlon, we sold statlonery and high school emblems In the sprmg under the d1rect1on of Mxss McMahon, we presented our Iumor Play ' Beyond Reason In order to brmg tlus successful year to a close, we put on a recepuon Ln honor of the Semors Everyone, when arnvmg at the Receptlon saw the gymnasmm gally decorated Ill a Spanxsh theme After we had fmlshed d1n1ng, a program was presented at wh1ch lack Merkel acted as master of cere mon1es The speaker for the evemng was a former Chelsea Hlgh School student, Mr Iames Danxels who was enyoyed by all When the program was over and the tables and cha1rs had been cleared from the floor, Knxck Iabe and Orchestra furmshed muslc for the dance wluch lasted untll twelve o'clock, thus completmg one of the greatest thrzlls of our l1ves Now, after a few weeks of well earned vacatlon, we shall return to Chelsea I-hgh as Hopeful Semors In September we began our fourth and fmal year 1n Chelsea Hlgh We started the year Wlth very eager plans to make a great success of our last days here lack Merkel proved to be very capable of managmg the class, so we elected lum as Pres1dent To help h1m, we elected Wllma Koengeter, as Vlce Pres1dent Eldean Elsele, as Secretary and Helen Hankard as Treasurer Mr Chandler was our class advmsor and helped us falthfully all through the year, for wluch we are very grateful Our f1rst and foremost goal was to fmance our tr1p We started out to meet tlus goal by selllng magazmes for the Curt1s Publ1sh1ng Co , and Wlth the co operatxon of our folks and frxends, we fmally ended the campalgn wlth a sales record of S1 785 We recelved a plaque for out standmg accompllshment, by sellmg the most magazmes per person of any school m the Un1ted States Later we mcreased the bal ance 1n our Treasury by sellmg magazmes for the Curt1s Crowell Co Then our play, 'A Connectlcut Yankee 1n Kmg Arthur's Court, was glven January 10 It turned out to be a great success We also sold Pal Pms, sponsored dances, and conducted the Semor Stand at athlet1c contests throughout the year We ended our Hlgh School careers by tak1ng a crulse around the Great Lakes to Ch1C3g0 Tlus IS the fru1t of our four years work, the class of Nmeteen forth seven Dor1s, june, and Ruth 22 . , - . . . . , . . . . l . . . , 9 , . .
