The ideals and integrity of Col. Creed Fletcher Bates as principal of Chattanooga High School have taught dignity, happiness, and beauty to generations of boys and girls to prepare them to take their places as re- sponsible citizens and outstanding leaders. Col. Bates, interest in the individual has always predominated all others. He has culti- vated thousands of young minds, molding each into a distinct contributing entity. The com- mon-place, the second best, has never been enough for Col. Bates. Under such inspired and dedicated leadership, Chattanooga High School has become renowned as one of the quality schools in the South. Last year Colonel often expressed his pri- mary wish, I want to see my people safely over Jordan. Now, this wish has been granted, in this final year of service Col. Bates brought to the new location all the warmth, depth, and excitement of a great heritage. Through him, the great traditions have survived, the high standards and spirit of the past are now en- compassed in new walls. Chattanooga High School is prepared to meet the challenge of the future! Col. Bates graduates this year. Emblazoned across his diploma are the words: You have acted well your part, therein all the honor lies. ln the past months many individuals and organizations have paid tribute to this great leader, and thus do we, however, the most fitting monument Chattanooga High School can erect is the students - past, present, and future - who are living and will continue to live by the precepts taught and lived by this builder of men, Col.
