The purpose of the Board of Education is to cater to the financial needs of the Chattanooga Public Schools. Remodeling new Home Economic Departments and the addition of the much appre- ciated art desks are two examples of improve- ments supplied to Chattanooga High School. Those and other needs are met by special funds set aside by the city commission. The Board of Education may receive these funds by request for the opera- tion of the schools. Presiding over all meetings of the Board of Education is Mr. Dean Petersen, Commissioner of Education. When an election or any matter is not decisive, Mr. Petersen's vote breaks the tie. Since 1936 Dr. John VV. Letson, Superintendent of Schools, has been in educational work. I-le received his B.S. degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, and his Master's and Doctor's degrees in education from Columbia University. Mr. S.
