F3 Mr, Frank Trotter is Commissioner ot Education Mr. L. G. Derthick is Superintendent of Chattanooga Public Schools Although most ot the students of C. H. S. are not conscious ot it, the Commissioner and Board ot Education set the policy of the entire city school system. The chairman, who presides over the meetings, Commissioner Frank Trotter, is elected by the citi- zens of Chattanooga. Another important person in this behind-the-scenes work is the superintendent of Chattanooga Public Schools, Mr, L. G. Derthick. He works with the Commissioner and the Board of Education by informing them of the needs and the activities ot the school. After careful consideration ot all school problems, the Board ot Education makes recommendations to the City Commission, Another duty ot this group is the naming of the superintendent ot schools. Ml TRATIUT Another person who is more prominent in The minds of C. H. S. students is Col. Creed F. Bates, The principal of Chattanooga Hiah School. He is not only principal and the sponsor of The Student Council at City, but also a trustee of the University of Chattanooga, secretary of the board of trustees of Bonny Oaks School, a lieutenant- colonel in The Army Reserve Corps, and chairman of the Army advisory committee for Chattanooga. There are four more important behind-the-scenes office workers at C. H. S Every morning Mr. W. P. Selcer was seen carrying on one of his daily duties, that of writing out admittance slips for absentees. He was The assistant principal, The treasurer, and The summer school director at C. H. S, Another of his Colonel Creed F' Bolesf p'l ClpOl' 'e' minisces over twenty-three years as head duties was The direction of The activity calendar. Although of Chattanooga High School. This was his last year at C. H. S., Mr, Selcer's jovial per! sonality will long be remembered. Keeping all school records, compiling all class ratings, and figuring all personal and Test ratings are only a few of The many duties of The school registrar, Miss Ruth Scholze. She also helps students with college applications and sends grade transcripts of students to various colleges and business firms. A variety of duties fall upon The shoulders of the secretary of Chattanooga High School, Miss Ame- lia Bazemore. From early in the morning until late in the afternoon her day is filled with such tasks as checking absentees, making all reports to the Southern Association and the state, writing all school correspondence, and keeping the office in order. Mrs. Nan Martin is the assistant Treasurer and the sponsor of the Bankers at City. The proper run- ning of The bookstore and the responsibility for all financial business fall under The able direction of Mrs. Martin. Mr. Selcer directs the activity Miss Scholze and Miss Bazemore collaborate on the state reports. Mrs. Martin, assistant treasurer opens the safe for a new day.
