Seneca Style has no fixed laws; It is changed by the usage MAJjHNNA ft Of IOa A school is mode up of mony people • from the county superin- tendent to the principol; from the teachers to the custodial staff. However, more important than oil these ore the students; for without the students, there would be no need for a school. And, contrary to o populor belief held by mony teachers, the student also has a private life. The CHS student hos o life that is both unique and similar to others. Some people may joke about life in o small town being boring, but they'd be surprised at the fun the CHS students hove. Mony CHS students dwell on the upcoming weekend. During the winter, o Friday night is usually spent of o football gome, and o Saturday night or the movies. After the movie, the students might grab o pizza or o ham- burger. But winter is only one of the four seasons in a student's life. Summer is the most exciting time of the year. CHS students long for weekends at the beach. One may find mony CHS students on Panama City Beach during the summer, especially during spring holidays. Shopping for that sum- mer wardrobe is also a favorite of the girls. If one would like to find out more about the CHS students, just go where the students are. There con be found a group of students hanging our ot Naomi's or the Junior Food Store absorbed in the video games. There can also be found o group of CHS students congregating in the parking lot in the morning before school or in the gym or lunch. There's a pretty knowledgeable group in front of the school before the first bell and there is another crowd behind the gym or lunch, (usually in o gome of football). 5TUDENT 18 student life LIFE However, life is nor oil fun and gomes. Believe if or not, there is a time for seriousness. There comes a rime when you must fight for what you believe. The Juniors proved this when it come rime to build the traditional Homecoming Bonfire. However, the Seniors, not to be outdone by any means, ran awoy with the poster contest. Also, any So- phomore would be more than happy to sit you down and scream SOPHOMORE M-A-N-l-A, SOPHOMORE MANIA! in your ear. The mighty Freshmen are not to be taken lightly either; they hold their ground at any pep rally. The eighth and seventh graders proved to everyone their spirit also. They completely dominated the Spirit Chain event. Another serious side to life is that one must make a living, somehow. Before school, after school, and on weekends, one can find many CHS students trying to make an extra buck or two. These are envied by those who ore less fortunate, and cannot find employment, bur that's life . .. And, this is life, too . . . Student Life. More importantly, it is the CHS Student Life. The program was presented to boost yearbook sales. Mr. CHS, Garry Reed, was a very busy student. He starred his day at 4:30 A. M. and went to work at Irvin's Bakery. Then he came to school from 8:25 to 3:25. His afternoons and evenings were usually filled with homework, television, earing, and talking to his girl friend. Prior to the 1982-'83 term he was appointed principal by the Gadsden County School Board. Various questions were pre- sented to Mr. Griffin concerning his first year as principal. What ore your opinions of the proposal to lengthen the school year? The school year does not need to be lengthened, instead more emphasis needs to be placed on the students performing to their capability during the time ailoted. What, if any, ore the plans for expanding our curriculum? If a sufficient number of requests ore received to offer more in our curriculum than is offered now, I would consider expanding the curriculum, provid- ed we have certified instructors and it could be placed in the current schedule without major conflicts. What complaint have you heard from the students most Charles D. Griffin. Principal often this year? I really have not heard many complaints personally from students this year. What is your overview and opinion of the new facility? The new facility is just great. It has adequate size classrooms, has on abundance of storage space for teachers, and since it is to be centrally heated and air conditioned it should provide a good learning environment for our students. In 1971 he was appointed as curriculum assistant at CHS, along with reaching senior English. He served in this position until his appointment as assistant principal for the current school term. Mr. White was interviewed about his responsibilities as assis- tant principal. What changes have occurred since you accepted this position? I feel that there is a lower incidence of vandalism. In my opinion, the students have a certain pride in their school.'' Do you like your present job better than your former one? I was never bored with teaching. I simply decided it was time for a change. Each job has its highlights.” What do you think of the proposal of lengthening the school year? Lengthening the school year isn’t the answer. I don’t think it would help academically. I'd like students to apply themselves in the rime they spend in school.” Nopollo White, Assistant Principal administration 121 In your opinion why is it fhor students hove leorning problems? another year of school had begun. This year was relatively similar to most in the past. There was a slight decrease in enrollment since the 1981-82 school term. There was a total of 409 students in ’81-'82 and a total of 398 in '82-'83 — o difference of 11 students. This decline seemed to be a continuation of the post several years. When rolls become fairly jble, the seventh grade hod the largest enrollment with 87 students. The eleventh grade was the smallest with 55 students. Falling in between were the freshmen with 82; the eighth grade with 62; and the soph- omores with 57. Fifth-eight students were registered os sen- iors onticiporing June 8, 1983, ond the day they would be GRADUATES. CLASSES CE5 The '82-'83 school term wos the thirteenth year for Corbin Scott os principal. The first two years were ot Sourhside, and for eleven years he has served of CES. Following ore some of his views on his job and on education. What are some of your duties as principal? Over the lost three to four years, the role of principal hos changed from that of administra- tor to one of manager. My duties include planning and im- plementing programs for K-6. This includes scheduling of special oreos programs which or CES enhances Chapter I, physical education, music, and library. Handling of discipline problems, evaluating personnel and pro- grams, counseling with students and listening to questions and complaints, both day and night, are other duties.” What ore some of the major problems you face as principal? Basically, there are two general areas. One is to satisfy the individual needs of students, teachers, and parents yet being able to stay within the county, stare, and federal guidelines. Second is the need to improve and broaden programs while maintaining the trend of ’back to basics’ ond staying within o limited budget. Do you see a big difference in attitudes of students of today in comparison to students a few years ago? The nature of today's students is nor as rebellious os that of previous students,- and in general they are easier to manage. Above: PRINCIPAL — Corbin Scon. Right: SECRETARIAL STAFF — Peggy Hutchinson. Betty Sue Gumonis. (Not pictured ■ Shirley McMillian) PERSONNEL Since you are principal, are you often expected to perform miracles? Yes, at all times I'm expect- ed to be all things to all teachers, all students, and all parents. Aside from report cards, do you feel that parents are aware of what their children do in school? Yes, at CES teachers communicate with parents through daily work, folders, telephone conversations, rest papers, in-danger of foiling no- tices, the pupil progression plan, and conferences. CES had thirty-nine instruction- al personnel for this school term. Seven of them were joining the staff for the first rime. In addition there were twenty-two non- insrrucfional persons. Along with regular classroom curriculum and the special areas of instructions special services were provided in speech and health and guidance.
