Jeannette York If Death should beckon me with outstretched hand and whisper softly of An Unknown Land I shall not be afraid to go For though the path I do not know. I take Death's Hand without a fear, For He who safely brought me here will also take me safely back, and though in many things I lack. He will not let me go alone Into the Valley That's Unknown , so I reach out and take Death's Hand and journey to the Promised Land. Carolyn Sherrod 33 Energetic Sophomores carry a heavy load at CHS. Membership in more clubs is open to them, carrying with it more demands and responsi- bilities. They are able to give a better display of their tremendous school spirit this year than ever before. Much of their talent and determination is applied to schoolwork, resulting in that warm glow of pride which only honest achievement can bring. When the last day of school cames around, the sophmores welcome summer vacation, but can hardly wait to begin their junior year and make it even better than this one if possible! Back (L to R): T. The first year of actual high school brings new activities and amusements, but it also brings new duties and obligations. Since freshmen are eligible for membership in some clubs, they find new interests and tasks in this area of high school life also, they find themselves included in all the other various activities of senior high. Extracurricular activities do not monopolize all their hours, however. Much time is spent on preparing classwork and other assignments. Their studies are difficult but worth the effort. Williams 41- 8th Grade Last year’s seventh graders are this year's eighth graders, and what a difference a year makes ! Life at C.H.S. is familiar to now, and they have no problems adjusting to it. Upperclassmen are not quite so awe- inspiring this year; they may be human after all! The football and basket- ball games, the pep rallies, the day to day events—-all these have added meaning for eighth graders. Still school gets rough sometimes: teachers expect more, and homework increases, accordingly. The eighth graders, however are equal to the task and form a firm foundation for an exciting high school life. 42 (L to R): B. Parker - S. C. Rep., J. Hopkins - S. C. Rep., N. Davis - Sec., S. As time passes, however, the seven- the graders are able to settle down and make a place for themselves in the busy CHS routine. Their courses are more challenging than in grammar school, requiring increased concentration and effort. Involve- ment in sports, social events and other school activities available to seventh graders enrich their lives and prepare them for constructive high school years ahead. L. to R.: F. To preserve the high standards of teaching and to supply the personel needed in the next few decades, teachers have a responsiblity to attract able and talented students to their profession. The FTA has become and will continue to be a vital source for encour - ing able students to enter teaching, a developer of professional and civic leadership and an important program of state education associations. It was founded in 1955. The members of the Honor Society are chosen on a basis of scholarship, leader- ship, character, and service at a tapping ceremony which is held in the fall and in the spring. Some projects of this organi- zation include publication of the school paper, The Voice of CHS, aiding teachers, and partici- pating in various other school and community activities, such as mobile TB, X-ray unit, March of Dimes, and Magazine drive. Faculty The Varsity vs. Faculty is an annual event, sponsored by the C Club. This year there was a new addition, the women teachers played the volleyball team. The students as well as the faculty look forward to these events. These games are played strictly for enjoyment and to help build better communication between teachers and students. In the volleyball game this year the girls came out on top, however the boys were not as fortunate. With the leadership of Coach Scott the faculty strolled to a two point victory. 103 C” Club The C Club is made up of boys who have achieved certain goals in athletics. It has an annual tapping ceremony which all new members are required to attend. Its chief goal is to promote good sports man- ship in all athletics.
