Amidst the darkness and the strife we pause and think and look ahead, and realize our past is dead. With graduation comes a world of hope and faith and love irapearled. Twelve years of labor, maybe more, we worked; and now this door of learning is unlocked to us. We pause upon the threshold, thus, and ponder at our future years. Our hearts feel sudden, stinging fears; suppose we fail at our new task? What should we do or say? we ask. Before—our work was planned and set. We studied hard, we thought, and yet—Those times when minds were out of doors on baseball games and foreign shores (on any varied thing but this), we could not help but fully miss that topic. But some future day, someone may look at us and say, What of this, or that, or these? We would not know, and soon disclose the folly of that wasted time. But lo--we hear the distant chime that summons us to leave you here. The notes ring loud and clear. We must depart and leave behind our schoolday treasures and our books. And now, with no more backward looks, proceed ahead, and carry on only thoughts to build upon the hopes and fears of youth itself. We put all else upon the shelf, and start anew, with strength of heart, to plunge into this fearsome part. ’Where do we go? What shall we do? The ones who know are very few. Our voices quiver as we talk; our courage trembles as we walk upon the summit of the Bridge. We step alone from the last ridge of childhood, where we were as one; together, happy; now—alone. We face toward new horizons; hope and patience is a wider scope of thinking that we had known before. For faith in God and love of man have upheld youth since Time began. So onward we will trudge our way, and hope that those behind will say, We won't forget you: we'll not fail to tread this same well-beaten trail. —Lovan 8 President JOHN DAVIS Band 1,2,3,4 Football 1,2,3,4 Basketball 1 C Club 1 Junior Class Play Student Council 4 Clee Club 1,2 Class President 4 NANCY ALCORN Citizenship Award 1 Pep Club 1 Glee Club 1 Basketball 2 Class Officer 4 Homecoming Queen 4 G.A.A. In answer to your recent letter we will try to tell you what each reember of the class of '52 is doing now. First, let us tell you about Estelle. 7f0 hear that she's very happy in her cottage across the river. And they have 6 kidst Budcfy- and Harold are really going over big on the Grand Ole Opera— they and their guitar. They go by the narce of The Country Hicks from Chattahoochee Sticks. 'Tell Shelley finally reade.it. He’s pastor of the First Baptist Church in Pansy, Alabama. In his spare time he picks cotton. Cecil Johns is, believe it or not, a Staff Sargeant in the Marines. Pfc. Bill Chapman is the cook for their platoon. He got a lot of experience in Home and Family Living, remember? Jimmy S. is another of the lucky ones that made the Armed Forces. You’ve probably heard about him as he's leader of the Navy band in Washington. Betty Jane and her family moved back to the old home town last year when she took over Mr. Jessup's job as pharmacist. Netty is a foreign missionaiy. We think she's in New York now. Jimmy Me plays professional football with the Los Angeles Rames. And Charlie took Bob VTaterfield's place when he retired a few years ago. You remember Polly ’Tester I'm sure. Well she's head nurse at F. S. H. Naturally Jimmy '.V. is the dentist he was Planning on being. If you're wondering ’That's wrong with the world today I guess it’s because John Davis is the new president of the U. S. Do you remember what a good artist Charles Clark was? ’Tell he draws the Esquire Calendar now. I'm sure you've seen some of his work. Nancy is teaching school at old C. H. S. now while she's waiting for a certain person to finish college. Last but now least v:e'll tell you about ourselves. Mary is Secretary to the Secretary of the Air Force and Ruth is Secretary to the Secretary of the Navy, while Pat is head nurse. That gets us all. Congratulations on getting your Doctor’s degree and professorship at University of Tennessee. Sincerely, Pat, Mary and Ruth 54 We, the Seniors of '! 2, leave these few words as our last will and testament To Charles Addison, Cecil Johns and Jimmy Williams will their way with the women. Nancy Alcorn leaves Billy Runkle—to the boys. John Davis leaves his good looks and strength to Tommy Gentzel. Harold Andrews and Buddy Rowan will their love of Hilly Billy music to Joanne Johns. Estelle Oliver wills her timidity to Ermie Jean Dickson. Polly Wester Wills her interest in Home Ec. to Delorese Curlee and Jimmie Lee Hines. Ruth Daniell gives her seat in the English classroom to whoever wants itl Jimmy McDonald and Shelley Crooms, alas, leave nothing, realizing they need all they have Bill Chapman extends an invitation to visit F. EDITOR Bettye Jane Johns 58 Dear C. H. S., ‘.Then I look back on the four years I've spent with you—I realise they have been four years packed with ary wonderful nen- ories. I shall cherish these as four of the golden years in ny life. Through the splendid cooperation on the part of you faculty, student body, other organizations and people of the town, and because of the tireless hard work on the part of the members of the band, we have been able to establish a record hard to beat- as a band—-that of Superior ratings each of the four years on all entries on the district level at festival (a feat not ever reached before in our band's history) and to capture for two years in row—the highest honors in the state for a class C band. lluch more important than Superior ratings has been the wonderful spirit of the students and faculty—the feeling that we were all comrades together. I shall remember you all for the nary kind things you did for me—and thank you for the privilege of working vrith such a grand group of youth. gay that wonderful spirit of C. H. S. never die I Yours sincerely, Mrs. E. Lamar Yatson 59 AT THE CROSSROADS You to the left and I to the right. For the ways of men raest sever- And it well may be for a day and a night. And it well may be forever. But whether we meet or whether we part (For our ways are past our knowing), A pledge from the heart to its fellow heart On the ways we all are goingI Here's luckI For we know not where we are going. We have striven fair in love and war. But the wheel was always weighted! We have lost the prize that we struggled for. We have won the prize that was fated. We have met our loss with a smile and a song. And our gains with a wink and a whistle,- For, whether we're right or whether we're wrong. There's a rose for every thistle Here's luck! And a drop to wet your whistle! With a steady swing and an open brow We have tramped the ways together. But we're clasping hands at the crossroads now In the Fiend's own night for weather; And whether we bleed or whether we smile In the leagues that lie before us. The ways of life are many a mile And the dark of Fate is o'er us. Here's luck! And a cheer for the dark before us I You to the left and I to the right. For the ways of men must sever. And it well may be for a day and a night And it well may be forever! But whether we live or whether we die (For the end is past our knowing), Here's two frank hearts and the open sky. Be a fair or an ill wind blowing 1 Here's luck! In the teeth of all winds blowing. -Richard Hovey 60
