Squeeek! Blast! Crash! Boom! And a long oooozing groan--that is a Charlevoix High School band tuning up for a pep meeting. The Senior Band appeared between halves at all football games and was relieved by the Reserve Band at some of the basketball games. Both bands entertained us at the Candy Sale Con- cert and at the Spring Concert. The Senior Band was in more than usual demand during the summer. They helped dedicate the new Mackinac Bridge in July, paraded in Boyne City on the Fourth of July, and at the Cherry Festival in Traverse City. At home they welcomed the Shriners and the South America to Charlevoix. The Senior Band went to Petoskey, February 28,to qualify in the District Festival. Despite all the confusion and jitters the band earned another first division rating to add to its record. Rx -11' Sefwvlfi ' , X X, we S! 2 x X' fmiji . Homecoming was a time of looking back for alumni and looking forward for us. The classes that participated in the 1958 Homecoming certainly made it one worthy of remembrance. Thursday brought the traditional Snakedance and Rally with its coronation of Queen Char- lene and her court. Friday's parade was an unusually big one, with more floats than ever. The juniors' revolv- ing owl head won first price. Our team carried out its part and handed Grayling a sound trouncing. As a grand finale, Remember When. . . , the Homecoming dance, tied in the memories of the past with the realities of the present. 1958 Homecoming was., indeed, a grand reunion. junior float wins lst prize. ll 'cilhuun ta Eamtff' a 0 Ao, wa 5 Nil? You're on, and we numbly made our first stage entrance in our junior play, Down to Earth. The only ca- tastrophe, a minor one, was when loud crashes and clatterings burst forth instead of sweet chimes as the heavenly members of our cast as- cended in the last scene. 5. -A , 1 , SP w S Agnes and Wilfred with Pilone, the half angel, are descending to earth to collect their prospective clients. Herman has finally convinced Augusta that they should live out their remaining years together. This comes as quite a surprise to everyone. .7i1nel9utfo1LQingew .93' ,Qmuntfze fume ! 3' 3' . Despite dire predictions of an opening night disaster, our senior play, Time Out for Ginger went OH without so much as a director's torn hair. A pre-play raid on the silver grease pot added a few unwanted gray hairs to the heads of some of the cast, but a trip to the cosmetic counter quickly replenished the paint supply. For the seniors, though, this was a special year. This was their last year in Charlevoix High. The 1958-1959 year was one of innovations. Our first exchange student arrived. Ruby quickly made many friends and it seemed as though she had always been one of us. Mr. Odmark organized his long-desired mixed chorus. The additions of the boys' voices brough a new quality to our choral work. As usual, the juniors left the seniors far behind in the magazine sale. On the morning of October 21, the high school was filled with dizzy juniors and seniors taking a Scholarship Qualifying Test. Homecoming, with the teamwork of all the upper grades, was a wonderful welcome for our returning alumni on the weekend of October 24. Seniors had a chance to look ahead into the future at a very successful College Day in Petoskey, November 11. The 1958 football season was the coach's dream. Our team made the State Class C Championship with a total score of 321 to nothing. Our big tackle, Kenny Wojan, made All-State. Time Out for Ginger , the senior play, brought the well-deserved cheers of the audience on November 14. In one of the best-attended Christmas Balls to this date, King Larry and Queen Carolyn had a merry reign under the soft lights and sweet music of Mistletoe Magic . The winter was a skier's paradise. We had one of the heaviest snowfalls in many an old timer's memory. School was forced to close on one occasion and many stormy days left us without bus students. On Valentine's Day, the P. T. A. held its second annual Carnival. Everyone did his part and there was a wonderful turn out. Raised over 800 dollars. February 18, we were hosts for the first Charlevoix County Senior Government Day Seniors from all over the county came for the day and had some Very stimulating dis- cussions. The Friday night dances after the home games kept rhythm-happy feet going and, a good many times, gave a chance to celebrate the night's victory with the rest of the 83-118- The school year is not over yet. We still have a rosy spring of basketball tourna- ments and track, the junior play, the mass choir festival, the band festivals, and the J-Hop to anticipate. For the seniors, naturally, the grand fling will be the senior trip, followed by baccalaureate and commencement. This was the school year 1958-1959, in different ways for all of us, a memorable , w I W Y - 'ly , k'lJ' ity!
