This year, the staff of the -Blue gg, Gold has chosen as its theme A Small School Meets A Challenge . In our annual, we shall attempt to show you how Charlestown High, a small school, meets the challenge of better education and better living for both the students and the towns- people with limited facilities. The school must provide the best possible educational program for its students and at the same time provide a well-balanced schedule of extracurricula activities. Problems must be faced by every school. But the small school in the small town seems to be very hard pressed by problems which would be minute in larger communities. Problems such as increasing enrollment, which results in over-crowding of class rooms lthis year the number of students in the Junior-Senior High School increased from 233 to 26917 adequate equip- ment for use in classes, as in chemistry fbooks and other laboratory equipment! totals nearly SZ, 000 each year: hiring competent teachers, costs of transportation of students: and expenditures for special programs. How is Charlestown meeting this Challenge? The biggest challenge the school must meet is that of staying within the alloted budget and yet obtaining the best value for the money invested. Because larger schools are supported by a larger number of taxpayers, though they have problems similar to those of the smaller school, they are relieved of many of those resulting from inadequate funds. In Charlestown, the budget is broken into several categories, the greatest fixed expense being indebtness for our Junior-Senior High School building Kwhich amounted to S9, 995, interest and principal, for 1957l. This expense prevents us from building a new school or an addition to the present one. However, the biggest cost is that of teacher's salaries lwhich amounted to S77, 768. 98 this yearl. Since the market for teachers is ex- tremely competitive and the shortage of qualified teachers is continuously growing, salaries are always rising and each year these take up a greater part of the budget. Hazen, I Shroeder A bewildered Freshman Class entered their first year of high school faced with the problems of choosing a course and deciding upon a career. Next, they were put through initiation paces in the bothersome presence of the entire high school. Having survived this, and having been made to feel that they belonged, at last, by the fun-filled Freshman Reception, the Class of 1960 found their place as a hard working class in Charlestown High School. The Freshmen elected: Alfred Giovanello, president: Janice Hoskinson, vice-president: Donna Lee Woods, secretary: Charles Andrus, trea surerp and Charlotte Reed, student council representative to guide them through their first year of high school. In addition to putting on two successful socials, the Freshmen sold refreshments at two basketball games. Their one-act play, under the direction of Miss Heistad, took first place in the school play competition. Alfred Giovanello won the best actor award for his performance. This Is. .. The Iunior class realizing what they had to accomplish beiore they became the graduating class, settled down to a year of hard work. Since they are the last class to go on an extensive senior trip, their most important job was to raise money for the coming year. They did this through their Junior Dance, socials., food sales, etc. At the same time they contributed generously to school functions and sports. Many of the boys were members of the basketball team, and Judith Hood won the best actress award for the three one-act plays. 16 ...,,..T?..,,i,T 5 5 S li Per.
