In remembrance of Signalman Seaman Dennis Patrick Loomis U.S. Navy SMSN Loomis was born on 1 1 March 1969. He grew up in the town of Arlington, Vermont, and graduated from Arlington High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in June of 198 ' ' . After graduating from Signalman School, he was assigned to USS CHARLESTON in December. 198 ' ' . He quickly became known as an energetic and enthusiastic young man. He rapidly qualified on all of his watchstations. and served as a role model for his peers. SMSN Loomis enjoyed athletic activities, especially softball. M ' ith his assistance, the CHARLESTON Softball Team reached the 1988 Forces Afloat Tournament Playoffs. SMSN Loomis joined the Navy partly so that he could travel in foreign countries and experience exotic cultures. He was excited about the propects of deploying to the Mediterranean. He died on 20 July. 1988, while on pre- deployment leave. He is sadly missed by his shipmates. In remembrance of Lance Corporal Javier Nunez United States Marine Corps LCpl Nunez was born, on 21 July, 1965, and grew up in the metropolitan New York area. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 13 March. 1986. Assigned duties as an Armorer with the Service Support Group of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, he embarked in CHARLESTON in August 1988 as part of Marine Amphibious Readiness Group 2-88 for a six month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. LCPL Nunez died onboard CHARLESTON the morning of September. 1988 at 38 degrees, 58. 1 minutes north, and 013 degrees, 41.1 minutes east (approximately 43 miles north of Palermo. Sicily). He is sadly missed by fellow Marines and CHARLESTON sailors alike. 97

In remembrance of Seaman Michael Patrick Marusa , ' U.S. Navy Seaman Marusa was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania on 28 December, 1968. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August, 1987. after graduating from Homer Center Senior High School, Homer Center, PA. Following Recruit Training in San Diego, CA, he reported aboard CHARLESTON for duty. Seaman Marusa, a steady and reliable worker and a good shipmate was well liked by his peers and respected by his superiors. In Rota, Spain, on 13 January, 1989, Seaman Marusa died while CHARLESTON was conducting vehicle offload. He is sadly missed by the entire crew of the USS CHARLESTON . DIV S2 98 9J ■•« Jf t Ki mt.
