ZOBRO “I came to dance-the sun was hot and so was I... ” MARIE ZUCK zuckie “Live each day to its fullest for to- morrow may never return. MICHAEL ALLMAN “Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make , them come true.” There is nothing greater than the loss of a friend. 1 find it very hard to understand why Randy was taken from us, but then God takes those that he loves the most. Randy was a person who loved life and people. We should be grateful that we were able to share some of our life with Randy. No one will be able to tell us that Randy is gone because he will always remain in our hearts. iis H1GHSCH00L FRIENDS As years go by we part Yeah, friend remember me? We used to be so close I thought that’s how it’d always be. Well, here I am; there your are; 1 hope you’ve made the most of life. Look at her, look at him, Boy he’s changed;lie’s even got a wife. I wonder what she’s doing She probably hasn’t changed She’ll always be the same She’s probably only aged. Yet, we all get old and further away This is the story so many times I’ve been told. I hope we see each other soon. It’s so darn impossible I feel like I’m asking for the moon. Remember the good times, remember the bad. It seems like only yesterday, It really makes ya sad. To think we’re so different. . .. Why? Well, time to go, take care If there’s a time you gotta problem, Just remember...... I’ll be there. 93 —Terry Palmer Class of 1979 «; v 'M - 'V 96 • • '•■ VO ' A 99 102 r—- Class Couple If you’ve ever seen a person always looking “dressed to kill” it was sure to have been Linda Kottmann. Class Steph Perry and Steve Kuno feel it is “sweet to feel by what fine-spun threads their affections are drawn to- gether” Dressed Tom Merchant is a welcome change from the everyday school attire. Cuties Because of Patti Collins’ small size and baby face you can’t help but notice her. Nicest Syes With eyes that sparkle, Jill Prall and Calvin Garrett can get you lost in their beauty. 105 Debbie Reinhardt and David Holtman are two people who can cheer you up on a gloomy day. Stephanie Delloog’s and David Bolson’s favorite area for dreaming is the theatre and their favorite dreamselves are its actors. Nicest Smile Laurie Kinsley and Matt Dobbins feel that “you arc never fully dressed until you wear a smile.” Kest Sense of Humor Class A e tors 106 Class Artists Just by looking at Sarah Schlcgel's and Kevin Butterfield’s works of art, you can under- stand what they’re trying to say yet no words are spoken. Class brownies Sharon Moses and Glen Niles act like “little angels” when in the company of teachers. Best AH Around Sue Man ville and Dave Rockwood believe that “personality has the power to open many doors, but character must keep them open.” Class Athletes With soccer, lacrosse, football, and many other sports; Michele Mercandante and Dion Mulvaney keep themselves busy in competitions. Most School Spirited uianc Kupracht and John Place are two people effort, and turn labor into a pleasant task. whu Miuw now ro ‘ w.c. Class Musicians Whether playing an instrument or just listening to music, Liz McCormick and Rob Kinslow really enjoy all aspects of music. Class Both Sandy Powers and Tim Smith practice the ‘'gentle art of making a person feel pleased with themself,” normally called flirting. flirts Margie Boyd is one person who is highly unique. She enjoys sitting and just doing her “own thing.” Gndy Williamson believes that “one must often change to be con- stant in happiness or wisdom.” If you've ever seen a real “hunk” in the halls, it was bound to have been Don Shaver. Mike Allman is truly an individual. He finds pleasure in gymnastics and other activities which show his true self. Tom Noonan believes that if you “consider how hard it is to change yourself, you’ll understand what little chance you have trying to change others.” Cooking Just by looking at Nancy Case you can tell that “if there is righteous ness in the heart there will be beauty in the character.” Most Zmnsfomed Jane Abbott and Jeff Serafini feel people should: “aim at the sun, and you may not reach it; but your arrow will fly higher than if aimed at an object on level with yourself.” Class Clowns Because Mary Ann Bchr is one half the size of Jim Baxter, it’s quite a site to sec them together. Messenger For the first time in Baldwinsville’s history, the budget was voted down. Fortunately with the help of many caring and enthusiastic athletes and citizens of Baldwinsville we were able to persuade the Board and other people as well to keep and support sports. Without these people we could- n’t have done it. I think I can speak on the behalf of all athletes and express our “Thanks!” 1 also would not have had a sports section to present to you and I’m sure youre as glad as I am that it didn’t happen, ’cause here it is! They love their soccer and their record and string of successes shows it. This rowdie bunch of soccer players had a super season this year. A lot of good things happened to them. They had a new assistant coach, Janet Turner (Womans’ Soccer Champion from England) coaching them this year; Coach DeRockcr, as enthusiastic as ever; tremendous support from the public and the team had more spirit and drive than ever before. They ended up their season with a league record of 8 wins and 1 loss, an outstanding record at that. For the first time in B’ville Girls Soccer history, this team advanced to the N.Y.S.P.H.S.A.A. Sec. Ill finals. This team worked long and hard to achieve this’ goal, a goal achieved by few. Unfortunately, they were defeated by F.M., 1 -0, in a grueling knockdown drag out competition. However, they were in 2nd place in the League standings and they had received a lot of positive, complementary remarks from T.V. newsmen, officials, newspapers, spectators, etc. throughout the season. Accumulating a 4-4-3 overall record, the Baby Bees demonstrated a continual progression in skill and game sense. Definitely mastering one of their primary objectives—“row- diness”-each member of the team found that the best part of J.V. soccer was simply the good times that are always a part of being involved in the great game of soccer. Sophomore Laura Ryder’s 5 goals made her the team’s high scorer, while defensively keeper Jill Scluitz came up with 95 saves. The annual “Heart Hustle Award” was given to Jill Munzert. Nancy Harvey and Jeannine Roller shared the M.V.P. honors. —Swim Zeam The 1978 varsity girl swimmers made it through a losing sea- son in good spirits. Which Way js Up? —Gymnastics Excellence and depth characterize the 1978-79 Girls Varsity Gymnastics team. The combination of some talented vetrans and many new stars should result in a season filled with success. Early in the season, the team set the pace by establishing record high team totals that were accented by new all time high scores in the vaulting, beam and floor exercise events. The higher scores are the result of the execution of many extremely difficult moves that can only be performed by a high caliber of competitor. All around leading ladies Linda Bessette and Laurie Smith are sure to be sectional bound, while Robyn Haberer is working toward a hoped for trip to State on Balance Beam. National Monor Society The Donald W. Coates Chapter of the National Honor Society was started in Baldwinsville in 1955. Membership in the society is considered the highest honor obtainable in the High School. Candidates for mem- bership must be in the junior and senior class have an average of not less than 88.7 and possess qualities of leadership, service, and character. Mr. Keenan is the advisor. journalism Club The Journalism Club began under the auspices of our com- munity newspaper, the MES- SENGER in February 1976. The club’s weekly page, “Bal- derdash and Ballyhoo,” presents the viewpoints of students covering a wide range of topics. Editors are chosen on a ro- tating basis in order to give all interested members a chance. Advisor: Miss Rowe Aquanotes Soloist LeeAnn Palmer received the “Most Beautiful Swimmer” award and the MVP award. Kim Rice was the team’s “Most Organized Lady”. Mary- Beth Norton won the “Super Smite” award and Kris (Fred) Friedrich was selected as the “Best New Addition to the Team”. The combination of some of the most dedicated and fun swimmers Aquanotes has ever had and the best crew ever to man a production made the 1978 show one that will long be remembered. The 1978 Aquanotes production of “Movin’ and Groovin’” was a great success. The months of hard work paid off as the crowds delight- ed to the imagination and fun of such numbers as: “Clowning A- round”, “Climbing Trees” and “Tricycles”. The power and magnif- icence of such numbers as “Rocky” and “Star Wars” blended with the quiet beauty of “Good-bye Again” and “The tllusive Butterfly of Love” to provide a thoroughly entertaining experience for all. Ski Club The Baker High Ski Club is an individually funded program with over 200 members. The participants ski on Tuesday nights at Labrador Mt. in Tully. Ski Club starts in early January and ends in last February. This period of time allows the students in grades 10-12 to have 7 fantastic nights of skiing. There are no athletic requirements to be a member. It is open to all the students in the high school and is supervised by Mr. Brussel and some chaperon- ing school teachers. Zke llimior Craftmm The Baldwinsville Junior Craftsmen’s Club is one of three local high school clubs affiliated with the Syracuse Club of Printing House Crafts- men. This contact with pro- fessional offers opportunities for members to learn about careers in Graphic Communi- cations and establish contacts for potential jobs. I was in B’ville this year as a Senior student and 1 must say that living so far from home, with only new people, living a different way of life and speaking a different language was a wonderful experience. I think it will help me my whole life long. In a lot of the letters I wrote to France, I wrote that Baker is the way I meet a lot of friends. I have become active in a lot of activities through the high school also. I was in indoor-outdoor track, ceramics downhill and cross country skiing. Also, I took part in some playing of football and baseball. These are two sports not played in France. I would like to thank everyone in B’ville who helped me to have such a wonderful time. 1 hope I see more of you either in France or when 1 come back to the U.S.A. in a few years, as 1 wish to do. Thanks, Helene tliettc, Martin, my Mom, and Celine Martin and Falou Bielefeld, Germany “friends Are the Window to the World My biutlier, sister-in-law and nephew Susanne’s Germany Hello, My big family 1 am the German exchange student from Bielefeld, Germany. My town has a population of 321,398 citizens and was founded in 1214. It takes a while to get used to your slang, your enthusiasm for sports, your day’s schedule and the fact that one can go shopping at 10 am. I will leave America with fine memories because I met a lot of nice people. I would like to say “thank you” to the Rotary Club and my families, especially my first family the Millards who had a hard time trying to understand my English. I will really miss the fall season with all the color and the winter because of the great amount of snow. The AFS Talent Show was a super production of comedy sketches and musical numbers, it was meed by Tom Merchant and Chris Negay. Beth Russ, a real power source auditioned all the acts and organized them into a show. The show drew $1500 for the AFS fund. Jrma from Panama When I was informed that I had been chosen to be an A.F.S. student, I was very happy because by participating in this program I was able to be more knowledgeable about many new places. To me, this experience has been the most meaningful one in my life, and therefore I am very happy now. The pictures shown are of both the old and new Panama, a typical costume from my country' and of course the Panama Canal. I would like to thank the A.F.S.,all students and faculty for helping to make my experience a success. So long, Love, Irma '78 Kim Howard ASS’er to Finland the Summer of 1978 Dear Students ajid Faculty, This past surrt|ner I had the chance to pend 10 weeks in Inkirsinen, Finland, It was the best summer of my life and one 1 will never forget. This isnfach different than just siting a coun- try, because one actually gets to live with a fajnily and live as they do. During my stay, I had a wonderful family and many friends whom 1 misswery much. I know someday I will go back again. I want to thajfk you all so much for making my ummer experience fipsdble. French Club has planned many activities. It has had a Cafe Francais this year and 2 last year. A French Emmersion day took place also. This is when only French is spoken while the members prepare French food and have a lot of fun. We are especially privilcdgcd this year because one of our foreign exchange students is from France. drench Club The Spanish Club was organized to give the Spanish students of the high school an informal chance to express themselves in their chosen for- eign language. During the meetings the club plays Spanish scrabble or monopoly, makes future plans or just sits and tells jokes. Each year the club has a fiesta or party during the Christmas season. The club plans to do some cooking after school in the future. Mrs. Nevid is the advisor and always says that it is easier to min- gle when you are bilingual. 216 Homecoming 78 Homecoming 1978 was a success. 1 We started the weekend off with a Boy’s Varsity Soccer victory over Ful- ton 3-1. Later that night we had a pep- rally at Mercer Park and a snake dance back to the school. A dance was held there where the Junior Class Princess, Deb Forish and the Sophomore Class Princess, Sue Spillman were announced. Saturday was started with the Home- coming Parade. Seniors won the spirit competition receiving S25. Our Varsity Football team lost a well-played game to Fayetville-Manlius. During half-time the Marching Band performed. Nancy Case was crowned Queen and Terri Toennies, runner up. The other Queen Candidates were: Jane Abbott, Dana Brennan, Patti Collins, Lynn Carroway, Michelle Forish, Kris Frie- drich, Carol Hildebrandt, Kim Howard, Laurie Kinsley, Linda Kottmann, Sue Manville, Sharon Moses, Michele Murray, Steph Perry, Diane Rupracht, and Dorothy Slye. .. - •«I Wl? Homecoming 197$ W l « v t The band played “Colour My World” as couples strolled into the Holiday Inn Ban- quet Room on Saturday, April 15, 1978. The mirror ball on the dance floor and the lighted candles on the tables set the mood for a romantic evening. As the clock struck midnight, Sandy Mac- Pherson was crowned queen of the prom, along with Greg Pearce as king. Their court included Diane Rupracht, Jeff Serafini, Stephanie Perry, Dion Mulvany, Michele Herbert, and Monte Vigliotti. As the evening drew to a close the couples departed to unknown destinations, carrying with them many memories of an enjoyable evening. The class especially appreciates the poem Lisa Anderson wrote and the cake Greg Pearce made. 219 W'iVi Concert ftand 7 ? During the school year, tl e Baldwinsville concert band me ved forward in its growth progra n, involving more students, and f re- senting a much wider variety of experiences to its members ai d audiences. Concert band members had the opportunity to become involve d in color guard activities, stage ba id. Small ensembles, all county and NYSSMA activities, and the | it orchestra for the 78-79 musical. Memories of an active and re- warding musical life at Baker will remain with the students fore’ er. Marching Hand ’78 Under pressure to raise funds to- survive the season in Baldwinsville’s first austerity budget year, the Baldwinsville marching band succeeded where many bands of less character might have failed. It was a year of selling, collecting glass and bottles, and borrowing uniforms and equipment. In addition, the band successfully moved into class “AA” of the New York Field Band Conference, finishing 6th in a tough race for that prestigeous title. The year in retrospect was one of victories over many obstacles. By the end of the season, the band drew a standing ovation from crowds in response to a show that was creative and exciting. 1978 Chorus Chorus The chorus meets 4th period every day of the week. During this time the students work on a variety of music ranging from opera to contemporary. Through- out the school year the chorus performs 3 or 4 concerts. Some of these are invitationals to other parts of the state. This is due to the success of some of the past per- formances. Besides concerts, the chorus also has members that participate in the school musicals. Chorus provides a fun yet educational way of learning about and taking part in music and its good experiences. 223 Math Club '78 Students compete with other Math Clubs in the county once every two months. Simulation matches and practice sessions are held on Mondays. Students are exposed to interesting math problems along with their equally interesting solutions. 1st Row: C. Alguire, T. Russet, P. Led by the dedicated efforts of president, Karen Honan, the G.A.A. raked lawns, washed cars, and sold bumper stickers to come up with much needed sports dollars. Future projects include a bowl- a-thon and a winter party. Spring will find the members actively recruiting future female athletes through a huge picnic for the eighth grade girls of Durgee and Ray. The event will promote the entire girl’s program and emphasize the importance of freshman competing on the varsity and junior varsity teams. Row 1: B. Root, J. Golden, K. Raynor, N. Hulbert, P.
