The Madwoman of Chaillot, played by Marcia Eidel, is confronted with saving the world from the evil plots of society in a single day. A de- posit of oil is said to be under her Paris cafe, and prospectors are determined to reach it. With the help of the Sewer- man, Deaf Mute, Irma, Pierre, Josephine, and others, the Madwoman is able to lure the evil people into her bottomless cellar and bring happiness back into life. The play, a poetically comic fantasy, was an exciting challenge for the actors, crews and directors. The entire cast of The Madwoman of Chaillot hams it up for the cameraman. The 80 contest partici- pants, with their coach, Mr. Jerry Hatch, and assistant coaches, Mrs. Eleanor Logan and Miss Kathy Rice, traveled 3800 Montana miles to twelve separate contests. The team spent 400 hours away from home competing in a total of 1060 rounds. If the time spent in preparing for victorious competition — an average of one hour a day for eight months— is added to the actual time of competition, the total time each of these long-winded Rustlers spends on speech activities in a year comes to 650 hours! Yet none of the students say this wearily, but with pride. Does all this time and effort pay otT. ' Talent, time, training, effort plus the will to win equal tro- phies, evidenced by the fact that for the first time, this year the CMR speech team won the sweepstakes trophies at both the NFL District Contest and the Montana District 3 contest, and became one of the best teams in the state. But what more long lasting effect is there? Look at the professional men and women in the business world today, and you will find a large percentage have had speech training. The French program is offered on two levels: level one comprises first, second, and third year French, and level two is offered for four year French, level one includes film strips, tape recorders, conversation, compositions, grammar, and graded reading. Level two contains advanced composition, modern French literature, and college preparation, the class approximates a college level situation. Three years of German are offered, the language study advances from speaking, reading and writing to German history, a study of Dier Roller , a monthly reader, and a study of modern short stories and some classical literature. The study of Latin allows the student to improve his grammar, vocabulary, and to further his study in humani- ties and history. At the intermediate level, the student finds a stepping stone to self expression and human understand- ing. Spanish is taught as a spoken language from the first days up through the third year. In addition to grammar studies, students study the history, culture, literature and novels of the Spanish speaking people. Only one year of the Russian language is offered. The students study the history, culture and customs of the Russian people in addition to the actual language. Mrs. Niemi relaxes between classes. Written tests are also written on this material. A practical test of skills involved end the unit of the activity. Drills and practice sessions help the students to learn and execute the skills of the activity before the practical test is given. Classes begin with ten to fifteen minutes of exercise. This exercise is designed to condition as well as prepare the student for class participation. At the conclusion of the warmup the class begins working on the unit being taught. In the Fall a Physical Fitness test is given. The same test is given again in the Spring to see if there is any improvement in the individual student ' s per- formance. The following activities are taught during the year: (Boys) touch football, soccer, cross country, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, weight-lifting, gymnastics, badminton, table tennis, track field, and softball; (Girls) soccer, speedball, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, softb all, track, badminton, and table tennis. Literature, grammar, writing, and speaking skills are taught, helping students share the knowledge of other eras. Creative skills are emphasized, promot- ing new insight into old concepts and forming original ideals and goals. Through discussion of literature, research, writing and speaking. Rustlers learn to share ideas and theories. Rustlers learn more about man, his world, his accomplishments, his dreams and his knowledge that the basis of learning is communica- tion. Extra emphasis in communication and initiative has been supplied by the English department in the new Pilot Program. Now in effect on the Sophomore level, the program seeks to provide students with the opportunity to study in areas that interest them with a minimal amount of supervision. Independent research and discovery are key factors. Students advance from level to level as they finish assigned projects in each area, working towards the possibility of studying a subject of their own choosing. This pro- gram is designed to give the student training in the various vocations available in the Great Falls area. The high school diploma, received alter completion of this program, will enable that student to meet mini- mum entrance requirements for Montana colleges and universities. A pre-vocational course of a general nature is offered in the ninth grade and a basic vocational is given in grade ten. In the junior year a two hour two-credit class is presented in which the student will concentrate on one of four general areas: Building Trades, Related Metals. Sheet Metal, and Power Mechanics. In the senior year the student specializes in one trade within his general area and receives class instruction and on-the-job training. This work-study program carries a two-credit value. Technical training in electronics and drafting is car- ried out during school hours using school equipment during the senior year in these two areas. When they get busy, there ' s no stopping them I For example, way before Christmas they ' d already built an impressive float for homecoming parade, cheered the junior varsit team to a winning football season, boosted their treasury with bake sales, won key positions in student government, and written several groups (in- cluding Sergio Mendes and Brasil ' 66) to ask about playing for the prom. JV cheerleader Liz Christiansen and Nancy Harrington get a lift at homecoming parade. Mean Busy Year For Active Juniors Junior bake sales help finance class projects Fred Weber works on plans for junior prom. Special projects keep juniors busy, but classes still rank first, and the juniors have shown the same skill and talent in studies as in all of their other activities. Heisey Awards, Honor Society, PSAT, and National Merit scores have helped to prove that juniors are achiev- ers. In addition, serving as student aides for the sophomore Pilot English program has added to pride in helping others. Challenge Of New School, Classes, Md into the gym lor another pep assembU High school is a challenge to new- comers — but the sophomore class has met that challenge and won! The amount of new Rustler pride and spirit is one proof of Sophomore vic- tory and for more, just look at activi- ties. A float for the homecoming parade, a big part in Government Day. legislation, bake sales and other fund-raising projects, plus a winning season for the JV teams. These are only a few samples of Sophomore spirit. Activities Is Met By Sophomores The world of activities doesn ' t claim all sopho- more time. In fact, it still comes after classes and homework. New skills and abilities are acquired and old talents polished as Sophomores learn to study and still have time to enjoy extra projects and activities. New teaching methods give more opportunities for knowledge in myriads of ways. Whether in class gaining skills, or using them in activities, the sophomore class has contributed much to life at CMR. Find Out! In The Petite Shoppe, of course! The Petite Shoppe is known as the authority on Teen Time fashions. This is no accident. Not only has the Petite Shoppe always shown a strong interest in teens and their needs, this unique fashion store also goes out of its way to let teens themselves decide what fashions should be ob- tained. The means is a unusual organization called Teen Buyers Club , including membership from all three of our local high schools. At Buyers Club meetings, members are shown the new fashions months in advance of the regular season seeing then as regular store buyers see them. From the opinions the club members, the Petite Shoppe decides what fashions to buy for this age group. Buyers Club is also associated with the National Fashion Board of SEVENTEEN Magazine. 236 K ' f)ft i .0 J K ; 27VyDlO i R 9 flHni r ( F W H l m ' ia -- ' ' 1 M -- PERSONALITIES . . , f flMb u v W . . .
