. I ' ' . cfffawe SHlP'S HISTORY QHQTLV 1905? .-.,..-.. .... A' M t'-ww. The USS CHARLES H. RGAN QDE,gQ 3g, .,4, is, one of the Navy's FRAM MK 1 Destroyers. She was built in the Bethlehem Shipyard, Quincy. Massg-and commissioned there on September 12, 1946. The 'ship was christened by the mother of Pvt. Charles H. Roan, USMCR, Congressional Medal of Honor win- ner, in whose honor the ship is named. The ROAN is homeported in Newport, R.l. and is assigned to Destroyer Squadron T'en. Among her many deployments is an eight month around-the-world cruise in 1954 and., in 1959, she was selected to participate in the first transitting of the St. Lawrence Seaway by Naval Vessels. In 1963, ROAN was the third ship in the Atlantic Fleet to qualify with DASH CDrone Anti-Submarine Helocopterj and the first ship to use these helocopters operationally. ln 1965, during the Dominican Republic crisis, ROAN was one of the first ships to land Marines in the Santo Domingo area. In Febru- ary, 1966, ROAN deployed to the Sixth Fleet and spent six weeks in the Middle East area before return- ing to Newport. After her return to the States, she took part in various operations and in March of 1967, the ship again deployed to the Mediterranean Sea for duty with the Sixth Fleet. During the cruise, ROAN was on hand to protect U.S. citizens and property during the crisis in Greece and the war between Israel and the United Arab Republic. A After being extended an additional two weeks, ROAN returned to Newport in August of 1967, hav- ing traveled a total of some 44,000 miles and visited eight countries during her deployment.
