Educated at Thayer Academy, Harvard College, and iHarvard University. Commissioned as an ensign in the Naval Reserve Oflicers Training Program at Harvard in 1938. Active naval' duty commenced in 194-0 aboard the battleship U.S.S. MARYLAND.
