Some of us have been together a long time, while others have joined us along the way. One thought remains in all our hearts-and that is, we have not only attained the basic objectives of education here at Brush High School, but striving in our own way we feel we have accomplished the task of becoming better citizens of today to face the greater responsibilities of tomorrow! A scene that will linger long in our memories. 'if x f' , X ul .mba I CLASS As we look back on our school days, many of us chuckle over the stages of growing up we went through-little things that seemed so important then make our eyes water with laughter now! Remember fellas, that afternoon you met Willie Jones behind the old school bus for a bruising fist fight? You came home with a puffy right eye but it Was worth it-because Sally was yours! Seventh grade found us all in a big circle on the stage-Dancing class! How far it seemed across that circle when it came time for the two-step right fellas? The girls will recall that first date, he came to the door, grinned sheepishly, shifted from one foot to the other and didn't even seem to mind when your kid brother said, You better watch out for my sister, she's got a powerful left! Funny he never asked you out again. The old cafeteria on the third floor was the scene of our class dances in 8th and 9th grades. Everybody went stag and usually ended the eve- ning with a coke at Connor's. When the yearbook came out there was a rush to the Seniors for their signatures-they seemed sooo grown up! In the tenth grade, among other things that remain in our memories was the movie on appendectomy in Biology that had the girls getting that weak feeling in their stomachs. The talent contests between classes was held that year, and Barbie King and Nick Minadeo started off our 10th grade show with a dream in the toyshop. Some of the acts were Bob Mac- 42 .A Nancy Muller Rene Rothstein Micky McCammon Gregor the magician , jackie and Audrey in their traditional Charleston and of course Carol, Barb, Lill and Anne as the -4 Aces. That year Bill Randle had everyone rushing to get the real 4 Aces autographs as he brought them to school for an assembly that almost turned into a riot! Being Juniors brought us class rings, new officers, snappy black and silver jackets and the Sno-Ball our class dance held in the gym with music by Bob Russell's Band. Remember those wonderful preparations for the Prom? How proud we were to open up the doors of the Tudor Arms and play host to the Seniors-and even the rain didn't keep any- one from the picnics at Portage Lakes the next day! And then like a flash, before we even had time to talk over our summer vacations, the fall of '53 brought us to the top-THE SENIOR CLASS GF 195-4!! All around us things whizzed as we were caught in a whirl of studies, social, and athletic events. Senior cards and pictures added to our importance. Our last class dance went off in fine style in the new canteen-we were so thankful it was finished before we had to leave as it made a wonderful going away present! Yes, we've had a full school life, and we'll never forget it. By promoting an understanding between faculty and student, a successful program was carried out to meet the desires of all. .Due to efforts of the members, the impressive Coronation Assembly for the homecoming queen and her attendants together with the Varsity Hop brought a charming conclusion to the football season. Basketball fans were delighted to see the Greater Cleveland Con- ference school penants hanging in the gymnasium. They also enjoyed the up-to-date Scrapbook, which was placed in the trophy case to display the publicity of our team's successes. The most important accomplishment of the Student Council this year was the establishment of Honor Study Halls. lt is hoped that this experiment in self-discipline will be successful and remain as a Brush tradition. A climax to their many accomplishments was the clever and fascinating Brown and Gold Revue, which displayed student talent. Through the sponsorship of Miss Kingzett, this organization of elected representatives helped each student enjoy the benefits of self-government. The Brush Leaders' Club was established to unite the nominees for the various class offices for the sole purpose of using their abilities of leadership to assist and cooperate in promoting school campaigns and events. Some of its various projects have been the planning of the Ohio Sesquicentennial Celebration and the sponsoring of a boosters' section at varsity athletic contests. It has also promoted Brotherhood Week and the school's annual fund drive. Through the efforts of all of its members the Saturday night canteens, sponsored by the Kiwanis and held in the new Kiwanis Youth Center, were very suc- cessful. Not pictured: J. Wilson, F. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Let this light so shine as to be the symbol of the ideals of this honorary chapter. These words are a great inspiration in the lives of those students who are chosen to' receive mem- bership in the National Honor Society. Leadership, Scholarship, Service and Character mark the qualities in which each member must be outstanding. During the impressive candlelight ceremony, the new members are escorted forward to receive their certificate of membership and a lighted candle which symbolizes knowledge. While the words of the pledge still sound in the auditorium, everyone realizes the truly great honor which has been bestowed. The officers are Anita MacKay, president, joy Belt, vice- president, Barbara Matthews, secretary, and Sandy Richards, treasurer. The organization is under the advisorship of Miss Margaret Walker. 85 IIARLE . BIIU Left to right: M. Miller, A. DeCarlo, J. Helsing, D. Moore, M. Machi, M. Barone, R kins, H. Hecker, T. Duncan, R. Each year they perform in halftime shows during the football season. These shows are practiced almost every school morning and Wednesday evenings, also. After football season they use their time preparing for various concerts, some of the best known being the Combined Band and Choral Christmas Program, the Combined Band Concert which, this year, was presented by the bands of Shaw, Euclid, and Brush and the Annual Spring Concert. They also perform in the Armistice Day Assembly, Memorial Day Parade, and at the Maple Sugar Festival in Chardon. In their free time many of the members are seen practicing for solo and ensemble entries at music concerts. Their hard work often brings results of which all Brush can be proud. Band Honor Society National Band Honor Society To those band members who show special ability in band work comes the honor of being elected into National Band Honor Society. These students, chosen on the basis of musicianship, leadership, citi- zenship, and service, have as their main purpose the managing of the business affairs of the band. This year the group conceived the idea of a talent show to be given for assemblies at various schools in the Cleveland area. Under the title of The Festival of Stars this show, produced by the Society, was presented at several schools. The officers of this club are Dick Hopkins, prefi- denzq Mike Barone, vice-pfeiidentg and Carolyn Hels- ing, fecretavy-trearurer, and they are under the 86 leadership of Mr. Frank Miller. Using much of the same music, another program was presented at the Public Square. With the approach of spring, the chorus started making plans for the Brush-Willoughby Spring Concert. As in previous years, this concert was presented at Brush following an afternoon of practice and a dinner. The climax was still to come, however, as the chorus practiced feverishly for their radio broadcast. A chorus is only as good as its members and director make it and we think Brush has the best. 88 Ill H SCHOOL IIORUS . f .f .litnll lillllfl jail ,wi Left to right, In row: A. D'Anna, P. Gallo, M. The hard work of this group showed how good acting, unique make-up, and ex- tensive publicity work together to improve every performance. Membership is determined on a competitive basis, where each student must do his best to be considered eligible. Through the efforts of the new advisors, Miss Williams and Miss Benner, dramatics play an important roll in our extra- curricular life. A change of face comes when N. Gilmore, B. Kingzett. G. This organization brings those girls together who are interested in the regulations and the art of playing all sports. With a whistle in one hand and a rule book in the other, many of the girls helped in officiating at girls' intramural games. Membership is earned by attending the events which are held at the beginning of the semester. The girls enjoyed bowling, roller skating, the traditional All-Star vs. Teachers Volleyball Game, and a scavenger hunt, which sent the girls scurrying around the building. Those girls who filled the require- ments were initiated as members at the impressive candle light service on January 7. The agenda for the second half of the year consisted of a trip to Cabin X, the Mother and Daugh- ter Tea and the big, all-important Play Day. This year a Hawaiian theme was cleverly used to entertain the girls from other schools with games and food. This was because a subscription campaign energetically con- ducted by Art Raybin, Arc-Lite business manager, was received by over 70 per cent of the student body. The paper owed much of its success to the efforts of Editor Lucy Aveni and to Pamela Bilkey, managing editor. Contributors for the most part were from the journalism class in its first year at Brush. The Arc-Lite tried to report all activities that were of interest to the students at Brush as honestly and as entertainingly as possible. Left to right: P. Bilkey, C. Nieman, B. Yenigar, S.
