Assisting Alice on the editorial staff were Margaret Gilson and Naomi Stwan, assistant editors. The business staff, headed by Robert Bonnell, business manager. consisted of Virginia Bittikofer, advertising manager. and Arthur Richter, chairman of the sub- scription committee. Two members of the advertising staff, Marianna Purpura and Doris Sargent, solicited much of the adver- tising and their work has been appreciated by all. The pictures of classes and activities throughout the book were taken by our photographer, Russell Meinke, who was as- sisted by Robert Whitaker. Russell also mounted the candid shots, many of which were contributed by various students. Michael DeMarco, art editor, created Li1tle Arky Brush and assisted in the lay-out. Other members of the staff were Elmer Fibich, Iane Kaighin, Howard Schuster, and Anne Levine. The staff appreciates the work which the entire senior class put forth in the pub- lishing of this annual. This consisted of soliciting advertising, writing copy, and typing. ' Arc - Lite Staff E A D E D by Margaret Gilson, edi- tor-in-chief, the Arc-Lite this year again attained a circulation of over 500. The paper, published monthly, is a member of the National Press Association and the Quill and Scroll. Assisting Margaret on the editorial staff were Naomi Stwan, man- aging editor: Ioan Bowman and Alice Esch- mann, assistant editors: Russell Meinke, art editor: Richard Bliss, music editor: and Don Smith. sports editor. Those on the busi- ness staff were Virginia Bittikofer, circu- lation manager, and Iosephine Darcole, ex- change editor. With the assistance of Margaret Gilson, Mr. M. G. Talcott, faculty advisor. organized the Iunior Iournalism club. This organization of 15 juniors and sophomores was formed to give them experience in publishing the paper and to teach them the fundamentals of journalism. Ioan Bowman, only junior on this year's staff, has been appointed editor-in- chief of the staff for next year. QUALITY SENIOR POLL BOY GIRL Most Likely to Succeed ....... , ....... Many times they marched to their opponent' goal through their mart and shitty offence and made magnificent stands against the onslaughts of much heavier opponents. Co-captain Sherm McKeogh was elected to the All-Eastern Conference Team for his fine ability to run and tackle. Art Richter, who played hard all season. was awarded honorable mention on the team. Andy McMahon, co-captain, could be counted on to do his best in all the games. Despite being handicapped with a broken finger, Gaeton Lanese played good football all season. Ken Eroskey and Bill Fenell played good ball even though this was their first year on the team. Bob Ioyce and Bill Spatz are two more seniors who played well throughout the seasonf B Basketball Squad A T S off to the 1942 basketball squad. Al.hough the boys were often on the short end of the score. their spirit never flagged. It was their colorful playing which filled the stands through- out the season. All the games were hotly contested and in most of the games there were but a few points between victory and defeat. Happy Martens played a sterling game in the forward while Iohn Adie starred at the guard position. We wish success to the departing seniors: Bob Giesler. Ken Eroskey, and Co-captains Andy McMahon and Happy Martens. ' Tracie S qaaaf HE most outstanding of our sport- ing events in 1941, was the naming of our team as track champs oi the Eastern Conference. This year almost the same team returned for practice as only one member had graduated. ' On the 1942 Track Team one of our ourstanding boys was Bob Oswald who ran the 100, 220, and the 880 relay and also starred in the broad- jump. Another member of the team. Ken Eroskey, did very well in the low hurdles. Captain Bob Whitaker, who ran both the high and low hurdles, returned from last year. Lee Vogler and Art Richter were outstanding in the mile relay and in pole vaulting. Other members of the team were: Dan Dorsch, Bill Smyth, Howard Schuster, Carl Huston, Glen Drake, Willard Lamb, Keith Huston, Ray Roughton, Dick MacAske1l,Ted Rowland, Don Booth, Don Agard, Robert Ianson, Eugene Torak, Happy Gourley. ' Baseball Squad HE 1941 baseball team concluded a successful season winning a majority of its games. This hard-hitting outfit was helped by the brilliant pitch- ing performance of Ray Haserodt and the veteran coaching of Iohn C. Welser and Fred Weinmann. The 1942 team had as a nucleus ten returning letterman. They were: Andy McMahon, Sylvester Meola, Fred Drotleff, Wayne Culp, Hap Martens, Duane Burgeson, Bob Giesler, Sam Con- solo, Lyle Chase, and Martin Rini. Andy McMahon, veteran first base- man and captain, led the team on the field. The new coach, Edwin Logan. instilled plenty of pep and enthusiasm in the squad. Thus our chapter became one of more than 2,500 throughout the United States. Four seniors, President Robert Dus- tin, Vice-president Frank Dorsch, Secretary Virginia Bittikofer and Treasurer Catherine Dykeman, resumed the activities of the society last fall under the direction of Miss Blanche Robinson. Much preparation was made in arranging the induction ceremonies held December 9, at which time twelve seniors and five juniors became members. As no member can hold office for more than one semester, new officers were elected in the middle of the year. Margaret Gilson became president: Dan Dorsch, vice- president: Dorothy Rehn, secretary: and Alice Eschmann, treasurer. The sociely, under these officers, inducted several more members in the latter part of April, 1942. Among the activities carried on by the members were assisting teachers, listening for air raid signals over the short wave radio, tutoring students, and award- ing honor and merit roll certificates. It was an honor for such a young organization to have been invited to take pari in the induction ceremony at Orange High School in March, 1942. The president, Margaret Gilson, and ex-presi- dent, Bob Dustin, attended their program with Miss Robinson, faculty advisor. 9 Student Council H E Student Council was very active this year and sponsored many of the school activities. The officers were: Russell Meinke. president: Dorothy Doman, vice-president: Virginia Ricciardi, secretary: and Lee Sal- inger, treasurer. The council was under the guidance ot Mr. lohn Iacque, who has shown much interest in the work of this organization. Their regular meetings were held every Wednesday, and weekly dances were given each Thursday afternoon. The proceeds of one of these dances were given to the senior annual, while on another occasion the money was donated to the junior class. The Varsity Hop, a yearly dance, was held at the end of the football season. This year for the first time, identifi- cation badges were awarded to the council members. SENIOR CHORUS w43,, ' B Friemiship Club H E Girl Reserve Friendship club was established at Brush in Sep- tember, 1941, by Miss Ioan Luton, who has proved to be a very capable leader as well as advisor for the organization. This club, which is a big sister or- ganization of the Girl Reserves, is super- vised by Miss Eldridge, and is affiliated with the Y.W.C.A. The Brush chapter of the Friendship club held its first installation on January 19, 1942, in the school's social room. The ceremony. conducted in solemn manner, made the twenty girls fully pledged mem- bers of the Friendship club. At Thanksgiving, and again at Christmas, the group filled baskets of food stuffs, toys, and other articles which were given to needy families of the community. Scrapbooks. which revealed the individual personalities of the girls, were made and presented to neighboring hospitals. An interesting ritual of the Friend- ship club is the burning of the Christmas Eve candle which brings out the symbol of the club, the candle lighting the way of life. Officers for this year were Marjorie McConville, president: Dorothy Robinson, vice-president: Doris Sargent, secretary: Barbara Elliott, treasurer: Catherine Dyke- man, program chairman: and Marianna Purpura, membership chairman. ' Senior Chorus NDE R the direction of Mrs. Sylvia Hamilton, the senior chorus partici- pated in various activities throughout the 1941-42 school year. On December 16, 1941, the P.T.A. presented their Christmas program, at which time the chorus shared the spotlight with the Brush High band. To bring Christmas music to the citi- zens of South Euclid, the chorus made two records that were played through a loud speaker system at the corner oi Mayfield and Green Roads on Saturday, December 20, 1941. Several patriotic songs were sung by the chorus at the War Council Benefit Show, held in February oi this year. The operetta, The Treasure Chest, was presented on March 27. The cast included Naomi Stwan, Betty Nichols, Kathleen Wilson, La Verne Zsoka. Michael DeMarco. Lee Vogler, Bill Manz, Dan Dorsch. and Sam Consolo. They also played in a concert with Euclid Cen- tral, Willoughby, and Cleveland Heights High Schools which took place at Euclid Central on March 6. Following this, the band participated in the Greater Cleveland Solo and Ensemble contest. At Christmas the band took part in the annual P.T.A. Christmas program. In addition to their music the members held other activities such as ping-pong tourna- ments and roller skating parties. On April 30, the band marched in a Victory parade, the. purpose of which was to encourage war bond and stamp sales. The annual spring concert was presented on May 22.
