The English De- partment was dedicated to improving the commu- nication skills of the stu- dents. Each student was required to take a two year course in the basic, standard, preparatory, or honors program. At the end of the two years, stu- dents could continue to take year courses or select some of the many elective classes open to them at the junior and senior level. Joanne Black, who was the department chair- person, taught English 9B, English 1, and Mythology. Phillip Bryant taught Language of the Cinema, English 4, and English 4H, and he also worked with the Advanced Place- ment Program. Dave Buss, a Reading Researcher, was also the golf coach this year. Carol Campbell, an advi- sor for the Future Teach- ers of America Club, taught English 2 and Eng- lish 10B. Eiko Cruichshank, who taught English 12, English 2, and Modern Litature was active with the For- eign Exchange Club. Harold Ecklund taught English 9, and English 11. Carolyn Hilburn, the Bilingual Program Assist- ant, taught English 10B and is a Bilingual Re- searcher. Sid Hill kept busy with Future Teachers of America and freshmen baseball coaching, as well as teaching English 9, English 3, and English 3H. They learned the skills to obtain jobs in offices as receptionist secretaries, clerical workers, bookkeepers, recordkeepers, sales and marketing positions and office machines operators. The students enjoyed the classes because the business department really taught something that was useful.

Henry Lewenberg, an advior of California Scholarship Federation, taught Grammar and Composition,and worked in the Reading lab. Marsha Lorenzana taught English 10B, English 10, Drama and Advanced Drama. She also worked with the Drama Club and the school plays. Ben McNary, a Reading Resident, did a good job with the Future Farmers of America. Pat Murphy taught English 10 and English 2. Charnell Ortega, a chief organizer of the graduation ceremonies, taught Grammar, English 9B, and English 1. Dan Solarez, a coach for the Varsity Football Team, taught English 1 and English 10B. He also did a fine job with the Open House and Back-to- School nights. joe Stuckey, who taught English 10. Simulated office Practice, and Shorthand 1, was an advisor of Future Business Leaders of America. Yvonne Tang, an advisor of Interact, taught English 2, English ZH and worked in the Reading Lab. Bill Terrazas taught English 9 and Drivers' Education and coached the junior Varsity Football team. Gil Velasquez, an advisor for the Asian-American Club, taught English 9, and English 1. He also' taught a new course, Literature of the Bible. Betty Wailes taught Film Criticism, Short Story, and Speech 1, and she was also the Speech Club advisor.
