Six years ago when lVlr. Phares came to Chandler High the school did not have a National Forensics League. In 1972, one year after his arrival, lVlr. Phares and fifteen students founded and received a chapter for the NFL organization at CHS. Since then his sguad has qualified at least one debate team to state every year. IVIr. Phares was named Coach of the Year in 1974. One of the contributing factors to this honor has been the overall record for the squad. This year is a good example. His debate teams have finished their season with a 122-41 win-loss record . His coaching ability has also been reflected through his Individual Eventers. This year's speakers have captured 4 firsts, 6 seconds, and 6 third place awards. ln addition the speakers have totaled 40 times into semi-final and one speaker qualified for state competition . With a young debate team and new Individual Eventers, Phares' team looks even more promising for next year. PHARES STARTED N.F.L. AT CHANDLER FIVE YEARS AGO Llll fllllltl l ll N S, HOLLINGSHEAD ENDS 13TH YEAR The 1976-1977 school year has been a busy one for choral instructor John Hollings- head . He finished his thirteenth year here in June. IVIr. Hollingshead handles all choral music at Chandler High School. This job was lessened somewhat this year when the fresh- men stayed in the junior high schools and the need for a Nlixed Chorus was eliminated. But there was plenty left to do. Not only did lVlr. Hollingshead coach his lVladrigals into earning the 13th consecutive Superior rating at the Solo and Ensemble Festival, he taught Concert Choir and Advanced Girl's Chorus as well. The groups earned money for a spring tour to Northern Arizona by selling candy and game refreshments, having bake sales, car washes, and a January Giant Garage Sale. Teachers 95
