Captain Gordon H. Rheinstrom Commanding Officer Captain Rheinslrom was born in Evanston, Illinois He attended Denison University, Granville. Onto, where he received a Bachelor o1 Arts Degree He was commissioned an Ensign uponcompiet ion otOtticer Candidate School in Jjly 1966 Captain Rheinslrom served in USS MOUNT McKINLEY (LCC 7) and USS JULIUS A FURER (FFG 6) until August 1969 Upon completing the Depart- ment Head Course at the Naval Destroyer School in March 1970. Captain Rheinslrom served as Operations Officers, USS MANSFIELD (DD 728) and Weapons Officer. USS EVERSOLE (DD 789) Following a tour as an instructor in the Tactical Action Officer Course. Fleet Combat Direction Systems Train- ing Center, Pacific, Captain Rheinstrom assumed command of USS GRAND RAPIDS (PG 98) in February 1973 Forward deployed to the Sixth Fleet throughout most of his tour Captain Rheinstrom. was relieved in Naples. Italy in August 1974 From November 1974 to May 1976, he served in USS HAW- KINS IDD 873) as Executive Officer, Upon detachment Captain Rheinstrom reported for duty as Junior Officer Assignment Officer in the Bureau of Naval Personnel In December 1977, he reported to the Office of the Chief ol Naval Operationsand served as Aide Administrative Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Surface Warfare) until February 1980 From July 1980 to December 1981. Captain Rheinstrom served as Executive Officer m USS FOX (CG 33) He commanded USS FLETCHER (DD 992) from August 1982 to July 1984 In August 1984. he reported for duty at the Naval Military Personnel Command, first as Head. Surface Junior Officer Assignment Branch and in April 1989, Captain Rheinstrom assumed duties as the Commanding Officer of the Pre-Commissioning Unit CHANCELLORSVILLE He assumed command of USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62) upon her commissioning on 4 November 1989 Captain Rheinstrom has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star in heu of third award and the Navy Commenda- tion Medal In addition, he is authorized to wear the Meritorious Unit Citation and various Theatre and Service Medals. Hebner LT Tim A. Batzler Combat Systems Department Lieutenant Commander Edward S. Hebner graduated from West Virginia University at Morgantown in August 1979. He received his commission upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in December. Following Surface War- fare Officer Basic School and Damage Control Assistant (DCA) School, he was assigned to USS VOGELGESANG (DD862) as DCA. where he served from Octo- ber 1980 until February 1982. Upon completing his initial sea tour, LCDR Hebner served as the Fire Con- trol Missile Officer in USS MOOSBRUGGER (DD980) from May 1982 until Octo- ber 1983. He followed this tour with an assignment at Navy Recruiting District S. Louis, MO from December 1983 until December 1985. LCDR Hebner graduated from Surface Warfare Officer Department Head School in July 1986, with a follow-on tour as Weapons Officer in USS GOLDS- BOROUGH (DDG20) from September 1986 until May 1988. He reported to Pre- commissioning Unit CHANCELLORSVILLE in December 1988. LCDR Hebner wears the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with Gold Star, and various unit and service ribbons. Additionally, he was selected as CINCPACFLT Junior Officer Shiphandler of the Year in 1987. LCDR Hebner is married to the former Terri Renee Stoner. They have two children. Amy Marie and Brian Karl and currently reside in San Diego, CA. COMBAT SYSTEMS MISSION The Combat Systems Department is charged with the readiness and mainten- ance of all radars, underwater surveillance equipment, air defense equipm ent and Aegis weapons system for CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG62). NY, Lieutenant Commander O ' Kane attende d the United States Naval Academy. Graduating in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Histo- ry, he reported to the Surface Warfare Officer Basic Course in Coronado, California. From February 1982 until March 1984, he served as Engineer Officer and Damage Control Assistant in USS IMPLICIT (MS055) qualifying as a Surface Warfare Officer In October 1982. In June 1984, LCDR O ' Kane was assigned to USS CONSTELLATION under the Aircraft Carrier Readiness Improvement Pro- gram serving as Propulsion Material Officer, Forward Propulsion Group Officer, and Repair V Locker Leader. CONSTELLATION completed a Seventh Fleet deployment earning the COMNAVAIRPAC Battle Efficiency Award. In March 1986, he reported to the Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, RI to attend the Department Head Course. After graduation, he was assigned as Engineering Officer in USS CUSHING (DD985). From December 1986 until July 1988, CUSHING served at flagship for Commander Destroyer Squadron Thirty One, the Pacific Fleet ASW Squadron, winning a third consecutive Battle Effi- ciency Award. His department was awarded four consecutive awards for Engi- neering and Damage Control Excellence. Upon completion of his tour on CUSHING, LCDR O ' Kane reported to Pasca- goula. MS to begin his present assignment as Engineering Officer on USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG62). LCDR O ' Kane ' s awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (with Gold Star) and the Navy Achievement Medal (with Gold Star). LCDR O ' Kane currently resides in Chula Vista, California. During his enliste« career, LT Kurzawa served as a Machinist Mate in the Navy ' s Nuclear Propulsioi Program and was stationed as a student at MM A School, Great Lakes, IL Navy Nuclear Power School, Orlando, FL; and the Nuclear Propulsion Trainin; Unit in Ballston Spa, NY. LT Kurzawa served as an instructor at the 600ps Steam Plant at SSC Great Lakes, IL, and in the Reactor Laboratories Division ii USS DVVIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN69). Receiving his B.S. Graduating in November 1976 from the surface afloat curriculum, he reported shortly thereafter aboard USS VALDEZ (FF1096) as Sales and Disbursing Officer. Aboard VALDEZ he completed European, North Atlantic, African and South American deployments. In January 1979. LCDR Ruff reported to Fleet Training Group, Pearl Harbor, HI, where he served as the command ' s Supply Officer. In January 1980, he was assigned to Naval Air Station Barbers Point, HI as Aviation Support Division and Inventory Control Officer. LCDR Ruff attended Navy Postgraduate School and in March 1984, received a Masters of Science degree in Computer Systems Management. He then received orders to the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, DC where he was assigned to work for the Director of Information System Management. At the completion of this tour, in October 1987, he was transferred to Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command where he planned, developed and Implemented shipboard optical disk storage and retrieval systems. LCDR Ruff assumed his present position as Supply Officer In CHANCELLORSVILLE in December 1988 after completing several months of enroute pipeline training. LCDR Ruff is authorized to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. LCDR Ruff Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Ruff of Tupelo, MS. He Is married to the former Nancy Morris, a native of Memphis, TN. The Ruff ' s have four children, David, Jr.. Emily, Daniel and Jonathan. SUPPLY MISSION The Supply Department Is charged with providing complete support and services to the entire ship on a 24-hour-a- day basis.
