The Catholic is a citizen of two worlds. Chaminade High School, in training youth to take its part in the future, must realize this duality and make its education meet both goals. The spiritual activities, under the watchful eye of the Blessed Mother, are constantly giving the students opportunity to develop a strong religious spirit. Various religious functions are in progress throughout the school year. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is ottered daily, the Sacrament of Penance is available before and after school each day, ' ' ll th and there are special devotions during October, Lent, and May, In a ese l l'f 's iven fullest recognition. activities, the role of Mary in man's spiritua ie I g Whi , orge that our country needs to have sturdy leaders to insure its progress ond security for the future. A native of Cleveland, Father Francis Gerber joined the Society of Mary in 1929. He made his perpetual vows in 1937. Father entered the seminary in 1942 and was ordained in 1945. His early teaching experience was obtained at Chaminade, Dayton and Chaminade, Mineola. His most important assignment, Father feels, was the mis- sionary work he did at Saint Joseph's College in Yokohama, Japan, from 1948 to 1955. Since 1956, Father has been here at Chaminade, where he has been teaching religion and has recently become Di- rector of the Sodality. We are proud to have Father with us and, in order to help him celebrate his 25 years ot service to us, we dedicate this book to him. Brother Herman Lambers has held many and varied occupations. He has shown skill as an engineer, mechanic, work supervisor, and cook. Brother spent seven years as Business Manager at Mount Saint John. He was one ofthe pioneers in setting up Chaminade Prepara- tory at Marcy, New York. ln January of 1952 he was called upon to open and manage the new cafeteria here. Brother Herman spends nearly 12 hours a day in the cafeteria. He starts at 6:00 a.m. and finishes after 5:00 p.m. Brother Lambers was born in Cincinnati and belonged to Saint Agnes Parish. We are happy to ioin in congratu- lating him on his Silver Jubilee. 1 3 A 1 . . The Most Reverend Korl J. Alter, D.D., LLD. Dehceean S ' df 5640034 Righf Reverend Msgr. Curl J, Ryan . V If NAR 3,2 X E I E My Dear Graduates, You have finally reached The pinnacle of your high school career. There remains only the awarding of the diplomas before you take a step into The unknown future. Are you prepared for this step? For Twelve long years you have looked forward to The day when you would be out of school, For Twelve long years your Teachers have endeavored to instill into your hearts the love of God and the love of neighbor. lt is of great significance that you may count yourselves among The graduating classes of this Centenary Year of the apparition of Our Blessed Mother at Lourdes in l858. ln a society, barely conscious of the ills which assail it, Our Lady appeals to you iust as She appealed to the humble maiden, Bernadette Soubirous, one hundred years ago, You must pray to God for sinners. Already in the Hrst grade of school you learned that God made me To know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world in order to be happy with Him forever in the next. For no other reason were you brought into This world, and for no other reason will future generations be created. How do you measure up to this obligation? Have you become well enough acquainted with the Mother of God to enable you to feel secure on the path of life? lf you find the world around you in a troubled, uncertain state, it is simply be- cause others before you have not learned the real reason for their existence. They have kept God and Mary out of their plans, and so it is now up to you to instill into other hearts, while Ending your place in the business world, the love of God and The love of neighbor. Many of your graduating class who could have been with you on this happy occasion, are already serving God and Our Lady as other apostles in some seminary or religious order. But whether God wants you to serve Him as a single layman, as a member of the married state, or as a priest or religious, may you go forward with the deep conviction in your heart that You Can Change the World. it is my wish and the wish of every member of the Chaminade Faculty that God and Our Blessed Mother shower you with choicest graces and blessings throughout the rest of your life. Vern Weber is a product of Solon High School near Cleveland. While at Solon, Vern earned the remarkable total of twelve varsity letters. Vern at- tended college at U.D. and was an outstanding fullback and line backer on the team that went to the Salad Bowl. After obtaining his lviasterate in Physical Education at Ohio State, he went to the Army, coached football here in the States, and was selected as one of the coaches for the Interservice Rice Bowl in Toyko. To show his versitility, Vern also coaches reserve basketball and golf. 7 SW! ln his first season as head football coach, Mr. Ed Regan proved to be a highly capable successor to Fuzzy Faust. In addition to its halt-time shows at all the football games, the band marched in the Holy Name Parade, the CYO Youth Rally, and The U.D. Homecoming Parade. The band this year played the popular hits With a Little Bit of Luck and Around the World. It also repeated the script CHS and saluted the Alumni, the Catholic Youth Organization, and the United Nations. With only eight seniors graduating, the band can look torvvaral to bigger and better things from this, its peak year. I 5 I 5 1 3 I . . V FIRST ROW: J. Stewart, P. Lamoureux, T. Reasor, N. Something new was added this year. For the first time, Chaminade Mr. James Wolf, Assistant Conductor had a secondary marching unit on the held. The Drum and Bugle Corps and the Rifle Drill Team performed at most of the football games, the fairgrounds, all the parades, and put a show on for the rally for the championship games. These units, comprised entirely of freshmen, spent many long hours during the summer and after school perfecting their routines. Under the leadership of Brother Trageser and Mr. James Wolf, they learned quickly and left expectations of better things to come. 'RQ F 1 'Q 51 5 , Q 4 , ' 's ,' . . A BOOSTER 11457. zVf'a4fP A 20 YEARS Acoz The world is moving at incredible speed these days. We are living in an age of unprecedented and almost unbelieveable growth. Methods have advanced 20 years almost overnight. Ideas that only a short time ago seemed fantastic, are now in actual use in industry, finance, service, and government. Gigantic strides are being made in medicine, science, and engineer- ing. Yet many of these which were un- thought of yesterday will be outmoded by graduation day! An era of astonishing development beckons to the 1958 graduate. Never before in history has there been such an insatiable demand for trained minds as today. It is from educational institutions that the alert, creative, imaginative brains needed to keep pace with these ever-chal- lenging, ever-expanding demands of prog- ress must come. Your diploma is your admission into this exciting new world of opportunity. Your education at Chaminade High School, plus your desire for continuing self- improvement, will enable you to assume your responsibilities in the uncharted years ahead.
