X? te s Hi: Excellency KARL 3. ALTER t Archbishop of Cincinnati t l In this Marian Year, Archbishop Karl J. Alter is especially trying to instill into his flock a fervent love of the Blessed Virgin. His zealous efforts have in the past born rich fruit and his peerless guid- ance will continue to accurately chart and direct our course of striving toward heavenly channels. On leaving Chaminade, a debt of gratitude is owed to His Excel- lency for the personal interest he has shown in our spiritual well-being. His past example has left in all students an enduring impression that will enable them to accept the responsibilities of Catholic gentlemen in a non-Catholic world. That pro- gram could be aptly entitled: A B' 1 ' ' ' cttcr World Through the Immaculate Conception. H Our heavenly Mother will be most pleased to see us reproduce her thoughts, words. and acti ' ' ons, we must, therefore, loathe and flee the least stain of sin, if we wish to imitate her Immaculate Conception. Our Blessed Mother spurs us all to accom I' h p is this. Is is the real purpose of the Marian Year. In this Marian Year, Christian living can be brought to flourish again, and true Christian principles can be applied to all social problems in order to bring true ea p ce to our times. But these principles must not remain theoretical, they must be put into practice. We must pray that people of mature age distinguish themselves by Christian honesty and fortitude, that families remain loyally united ' , give a sound Christian education to their children, and support one another in peace and by mutual aid. May our Immaculate Queen and Mother, then, make every one of you an apostle of the Marian Year and bless all your efforts with extraordinary success. Affectionately and devotedly yours in j.M.-I. The Right Refverend MSGR. CARL J. RYAN For many years, Msgr. Ryan has whole- heartedly thrown himself into the tremen- dous work of supervising all parochial schools in the Arch-diocese of Cincinnati. In the recent letter of the Holy Father, His Holiness pointed out the necessity of the education of the people so that their faith may be strengthened and their devotion to the Blessed Virgin increased. Monsignor has worked industriously to fulfill this request. The students of the Marianist school-Chaminade, Dayton- wish to extend their thanks for his untir- ing efforts in their behalf. '1 ' . EDWARD CONNAUGHTON For the past four years, Father Con- naughton has devoted his time to the supervision of Catholic education in the Dayton parochial schools. Without his guidance, Catholic education would not have reached its present high level. In this, The Marian Year, his work will take on new importance. We know Father will take this task in stride and the high moral and mental standards he has fostered in students of Catholic schools will remain with them in their later life.
