I Dog- matic bull INEFFABILIS DEUS, of Dec. 8, 18541 Moreover, it seems that the Blessed Virgin Mary herself wished to confirm by some special sign the definition . . . four years had not yet elapsed when . . . the Virgin Mother, youthful and benign in appearance, clothed in a shining white garment, covered with a white mantle and girded with a hanging blue cord, showed herself to a simple and innocent girl . . . who inquiring the name of her with whose vision she was favored, with eyes raised to heaven and sweetly smiling, she replied' I am the Immaculate Conception. It is therefore, a pleasure for Us, after a full century has passed, to summarize the whole doctrinal position and conclude in these words, that there is nothing more sweet, nothing dearer than to worship, venerate, invoke and praise with ardent affection the Mother of God conceived without stain of original sin. That pro- gram could be aptly entitled: A B' 1 ' ' ' cttcr World Through the Immaculate Conception. H Our heavenly Mother will be most pleased to see us reproduce her thoughts, words. and acti ' ' ons, we must, therefore, loathe and flee the least stain of sin, if we wish to imitate her Immaculate Conception. Our Blessed Mother spurs us all to accom I' h p is this. Is is the real purpose of the Marian Year. In this Marian Year, Christian living can be brought to flourish again, and true Christian principles can be applied to all social problems in order to bring true ea p ce to our times. But these principles must not remain theoretical, they must be put into practice. We must pray that people of mature age distinguish themselves by Christian honesty and fortitude, that families remain loyally united ' , give a sound Christian education to their children, and support one another in peace and by mutual aid. May our Immaculate Queen and Mother, then, make every one of you an apostle of the Marian Year and bless all your efforts with extraordinary success. Affectionately and devotedly yours in j.M.-I. His zealous efforts have in the past born rich fruit and his peerless guid- ance will continue to accurately chart and direct our course of striving toward heavenly channels. On leaving Chaminade, a debt of gratitude is owed to His Excel- lency for the personal interest he has shown in our spiritual well-being. His past example has left in all students an enduring impression that will enable them to accept the responsibilities of Catholic gentlemen in a non-Catholic world. Ryan has whole- heartedly thrown himself into the tremen- dous work of supervising all parochial schools in the Arch-diocese of Cincinnati. In the recent letter of the Holy Father, His Holiness pointed out the necessity of the education of the people so that their faith may be strengthened and their devotion to the Blessed Virgin increased. Monsignor has worked industriously to fulfill this request. The students of the Marianist school-Chaminade, Dayton- wish to extend their thanks for his untir- ing efforts in their behalf. '1 ' . EDWARD CONNAUGHTON For the past four years, Father Con- naughton has devoted his time to the supervision of Catholic education in the Dayton parochial schools. Without his guidance, Catholic education would not have reached its present high level. In this, The Marian Year, his work will take on new importance. We know Father will take this task in stride and the high moral and mental standards he has fostered in students of Catholic schools will remain with them in their later life. A- . Prizzcijml ima' Cozmxelof' DEDICATION For many years it has been the hope of faculty, friends, and students for a new Chaminade. Finally, under the guidance of Brother Matthew, our be- loved principal, the work was begun on Oct. 17, 1950. Although many were doubtful as to the outcome of his endeavor, the building slowly took shape and was dedicated on May 25, 1952, The senior class, the whole school, moreover, all those who have been con- nected with Chaminade owe Brother Matthew a debt of gratitude for what he has done for us, his students. A The time has come for Brother Matthew to go on another assignment, but the students he leaves behind will long remember him for his thoughtfulness and inspiring leadership. His smiling face and helping hand will always be remembered, not only by the class of '54, but also by every class passing through the halls of Chaminade. We, the senior class, wish you good luck and happiness. May God bless you and protect you through all the years of your life. REV. PAUL WAGNER, S.M. IMMACU LATE First among Mary's titles is that of the Immaculate Conception. This privilege was officially proclaimed a dogma of faith by Pope Pius IX exactly one hun- dred years ago. In it, God saw fit that the woman who was to bear Christ in her womb should .be conceived without original sin. It is only natural to expect that the Son of God have a human mother perfectly free from all sin, even from the first instant of life. This special privilege and honor, which of all women, of all the creatures of God, Mary alone enjoyed, is summed up in the beautiful words which the Blessed Mother herself in an apparition granted to little Berna- dette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1858: I am the Immaculate Conception. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. l Where daily attention centered during the retreat. This year, the yearbook staff has tried to capture the spirit of the Marian year, using our talents to express this theme on these pages. Looking back on the hard work, we only hope we have accomplished this purpose. The editorial staff, under the direction of Brother john Blank, combined their efforts toward creation. The business staff, under the supervision of Brother Charles Bergedick, supplied the financial means without which this book would not be possible.
