Members of the Class of '47: During your senior year the decision - a momentous decision for you - was reached by His Grace, the Most Reverend Archbishop, that it there is to be a new Chaminade it must come from Chaminade's alumni. You are now alumni. Others have failed, you must succeed. The Brothers of Mary bore the brunt of supplying higher education to the Catholics of Dayton for almost a hundred years. Learned and religious men in a long procession have given their utmost on the elementary, intermediate, and collegiate levels. Their meager financial resources were used to back up their educational endeavors to the point of exhaustion. They have no more to give. The Fathers Club became interested, They met week after week, they plotted and planned in dead earnestness for ways and means to provide for their sons a respectable school building. Now they have had to withdraw from the field of battle. That puts the future of Chaminade squarely into your hands. You have been sent by the Arch- bishop to carry the ball. While it is true that the worth of a school is measured more by the moral character of its teachers and the manly spirit of its students than by the polished marble in its halls, it is likewise true that there comes a time when the lofty purpose of the school is out of all proportion to the material surroundings in which that purpose must be worked out. All of us feel that point has now been reached. Your spirit of loyalty to your Alma Mater must urge you on to correct what is now so wrong, to build up in this Gem City a Chaminade High of which you can be proud, a school where the undying principles of Father Chaminade, the principles of our Catholic faith will be perpetuated for your own sons and for future generations. Class of '47, congratulations! Congratulations on your successful graduation from Chaminade, congratulations on the enviable record you have compiled scholastically, religiously, and athletically while you were on the way. Success to you in the battle you will now enter as sons of the Mother of God and men of Chaminade. Faithfully yours in J.M.J., I I Principal, Page 5 w: ?v'7:lTfil:, t 'Q '-l'ff',f1-'il ','4 e' r' ' . J- .4 it gt.. - ' r '02, t Sons of Mary, how may we ever repay you for the sacrifices made for us, how, may we express our appreciation for your guidance and advice. You have given your all in Mary's name to us and our classmates. With untiring patience and undying faith, you, with Mary's grace have from unruly 'freshmen transformed us into men of character. ' ,You have guided the development of our characters by example andiword, youlhave actualized for us the teaching of Christ, stressing His love of Mary and mankind, you have above all else taught us the importance of love fdr our fellowmen. ' We have seen you together in prayer, together in study and 'in work. How striking is the example of your family . . . priests and brothers all working together, helping one another, without envy, without ambitions, ,greed or deceit. It is this spirit, this way of life which we must teach the world. Your efforts have nottbeen 'in vain, your examples have not failed -in their purpose, for we have caught this spirit, and we have realized our responsibility to bring this way of life into our world., Yes, you have done your job well, with- out complaint, withoutlmateriallreward, you have Informed us' A- apostles of Mary. Here we havelived four happy years of school life. As through these pages we pause thoughtfully we whisper - Here is our chaminadest , Chaminade, a word, a name, a MAN - but more it is part of us, part of our lives, part of our character. We have succeeded! We have attained the goal we've striven for ever since we first became Men of Chaminadef' Welhave added to our victories, our successes and failures, this our latest achieve- ment, our graduation! Our. hearts rejoice as this - our youthful battle to become men - is won! W With every joy, with every success there is sadness, there is responsibility in this our quest for happiness., We leave carefree day, our boyhood friends, to face weightier tasks, to greet friend and foe in worldly strife. We bid farewell to Chaminade, but not to all She has taught us.. We cannot forget Hefr ideals, Her prin- ciples, Her values and motives, She has cradled, guided, nourished and perfected us. l-ler training will not be in vain foriinto the troubled worldiof hate and greed, into the world where might is-W right, vve bear the light of Chaminade. The unity of faith, this common bond of Catholicism is the source of the FamilyfSpirit which we possess and proclaim. Co-offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the prime source of our togetherness. Our little chapel is the pivot around which the activities of our school revolve. It is the heart of our school-life. He lives with us in simple dignity as within the heart of every Christian student. Every morning beginning the school day, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered. Together we banquet at the table of our King. Together we find refuge from our youthful troubles and problems - a Counselor and Consoler, always ready to tisieni to our explanations. As students of Chami- nade High School, we find another bond which keeps us close to all that is upright and pure, our love for the Blessed Mother of God. We love her as sons, other sons of Mary, and this devotion inspires us to work harder for her, and to be closer to one another and to our teachers, Her consecrated sons. It is in Her name and for Her honor that we undertake all our tasks especially the responsibility to help Her in bringing all men back to Christ. a 1 -4 Z1 uk 'kiln M y I I 7' I. x . ii H: un, ,. cab' 1 1 fb ' ' pin-4 ' 5 e I l A 1 ' . The pro- gram of family spirit in student life along with the newly organized student representation in the C.S.M.C. was under the capable direction of Rev. John G. Dickson, S.M. To him and to the student representatives the student body owes a debt of gratitude for the spiritual advantages afforded it through the C.S.M.C. in one of its most active and successful years. It is the spirit of rallies, and at the stadium and Coliseum, which awakens in the youngest Freshman the beginnings of the spirit whch is Chaminade's. What is more inspiring than to see a team of young men play a hard game of football or basketball, fighting in true sportsmanship fashion for the honor of their school and in the name of their fellow-students? Where elsecould the lesson of teamwork and co-operation be taught than one the gridironsor hardwood? The' value of teamwork' is appreciated by the student body for they know what teamwork is to success in study, in prayer as well as in play. The common bond of friendship and loyalty which embraces the youngest Freshman and the Principal himself is symbolized on the athletic field in the battle of sports. Together with team members, student body and the faculty, the athletes strive for triumphs and victory. For the athlete sports is his means of demonstrating the spirit which is Chaminade's before the public eye. . ' ' Co-operation, generosity, sacrifice, loyalty are the necessary qualifications of all the members of the family- of Chaminade. Sports are a means of achieving these character traits. We by our loyalty and school-spirit displayed by our cheers in victory or defeat help to realize true family spirit - Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior proud in success, .stronger through defeat. Although the score was not in their favor, they proved themselves true champions by winning seven ball games with convincing scores, bowing only to Massillon. The Eagles fielded a team that had both power and speed in addition to that all important winning spirit. A great wealth of reserve power characterized the 1946 squad, as time after time, they proved themselves able successors to this year's team. Real credit belongs to the seven line-men who were reported the only question mark in Chaminade's bid for the city title this year. From the start of the season, however, under the guidance of Tony Furst, they outcharged and generally outplayed their opponents in game after game. The totals for the season mark the end of 1946 as one of truly great achievement on the gridiron. --... :Xt il? - ylf af fit -4 , ...,, was ' 1 ?'d',,,,--0 v f,ig4ri-' 'X ,.-- I ,',, Q fl. , .- -1 ,U C A P T A i N L. Heck and Brennan were the big guns of the outfit as they cracked through for the most scoring. Lee Butler at the Quarter spot baffled all opposition as he mixed the Notre Dame box, the short punt and T formations into a well molded offense. Up on the line, little Bill Parker, was positively vicious at the guard post, his tackling and blocking should earn him a berth on next year's varsity. The ideals we dreamed about during the last years of grade school had finally been realized. Although only grown up eighth graders we boldly took our rightful place in the family of Chaminade, proud in our latest achievement. Immediately we went about with earnest efforts to be a success in our studies, to become active participants in the varied activities which are dear to Chaminade. We were active in sports, in drives, we joined the library squad, the C.S.M.C., the Chaminade News Staff, and made the eleven and five and look to us as future Champions. We caught one phase of Chaminade's spirit as we cheered our lungs out at the pep rallies. In the footsteps of the upperclassmen we felt proud as we passed from our Freshman year to the Sopohmore division and from then on considered ourselves Men of Chaminade. Proud, sophis- ticated and somewhat independent we earned the title of Men by leading the school in the Marianist and Turkey Drives. We watched and helped to earn the title with Chaminade's cagemen, and rejoiced with sophomoric glee as the newly organized golf team reached the state finals. We welcomed into our ranks the boys from Sacred Heart Latin School, they felt at home and their place in our class today proves that they weren't slow in catching the spirit of Chaminade High. At last we attained the Junior class. Upperclassmen we were called. Studies got rougher, but we asked for them, for now we were able to take advantage of the broader fields of knowledge, some remaining faithful to the classic and the math and the sciences, others took to Spanish, German, the business courses and mechanical drawing. Our social life, the Prom, the many dances meant more to us, now that we were accepted by our older brothers. The basketball and football teams maintained their titles adding prestige to us, the men of Chaminade. We took pride in Moonlight Frolics , our minstrel, for we as members of the Junior class had a very active part in it. Three of us were the endmen, and the chorus swelled with many of our lusty voices. Seniors at last! Jubilant, and yet with a note of sadness we began our last year at Chaminade. We, the class of '47 were the largest ever to be graduated from the halls of Chaminade. Under the guidance of our new principal, we the seniors laid plans for the future of Chaminade. The year was chucked full with activities, participants in these speeded the already fleeting days of this our last year. The football season closed with our team again victorious city champs. The basketball team, despite its inexperience, its defeats merited our loyal support because of its fighting spirit. We take pride in the eve of the closing days of our high school career, as we look through our annual, as we recall the Senior Promenade, our own Senior Dance, the bustle of electioneering for our Senior Offi- cers, the senior poll, casting our votes for our best student and best athlete - Robert Stachler, for the one who has done the most for Chaminade, - Tom Zimmerman, for the most likely to suc- ceed - James Gilvary, for the most humorous , - Ned Duffy, and for the best dressed - Carl Reichert, the final exams and now graduation - The Salutatorian, the Valedictorianl Farewell! We the class of '47 close one phase of our history, but yet we realize more than any other graduating class that the bonds which bind us to Chaminade cannot be severed. For on us the task of organizing all the past sons of Chaminade so that together we might build the new Chaminade. Our class history has no conclusion.
