Athletics A rapid review of the past Athletic Season forms convinc-- ing proof that Gerald Fuzzy Faust's first year as head coach at Chaminade was a highly successful one. In the short time that he has been here he has molded some fine fighting teams and has won the admiration and respect of the student body and followers of the school. ' On the gridiron the Eagles won three, lost four and tied one. However, these figures do not give a true picture of the iight- ing spirit of the Faustmen. The Eagles tied a much heavier Purcell eleven 7 to 7, lost by one point to Stivers, and by one I touchdown to Fairview and Roosevelt. Chaminade scored de- cisive victories over Kiser, Hamilton Catholic and Oakwood. Steele was the only team to score more than twice on the Eagles. On the hardwoods the Green and White quintet won seven and lost eight contests. Hamilton, Otterbein, Co-op, The - Alumni, Roger Bacon and Kiser were among those who fell Gerard qt-uzzyv Faust, Coach before the attack of the Eagle netmen. The Intramural Basketball League enjoyed a fine season with close races in each division. Senior B won the champion- ship of the school, with Junior B, Sophomore A and Freshman E taking the honors in their re- spective divisions. The track team, the second in the history of the school, gave a creditable performance and shows promise for the future. In golf, the Eagles walked off with another city championship for the sixth time in the past seven years. A fighting tennis team that gave a good account of itself in every match, and an intramural softball league completed the spring sports for Chaminade. Captains elected during the year for the various sports were: Donald Davis, football captain, Joseph Zotkiewicz, basketball and golf captaing James Wise, track captain. First Row: A. Rudzienski, C. The large audiences which enjoyed Cousin Gene and That Lucas Family can testify to his remarkable ability as a dramatic coach. His ex- perience overseas during the World War, when he was com- missioned by the government to form a troupe of players and entertain the American soldiers, has enabled him to stage these plays with such remarkable success. Cousin Gene was presented at the Dayton Industries Building in February, 1933, on three successive nights before large crowds. John Litkowski played the leading role of Cousin Gene. The supposting cast consisted of Wilfred Tumbusch, Thomas Grundish, John Toerner, John Schneble, Russell Cook, Richard Wenzel, Rodney Meyers, Dave Kersting, Leonard Daniszewski, and Thomas Hulse. That Lucas Family, presented in the beautiful auditorium of the Dayton Art Institute in January, 1934, proved even more of a success than Cousin Gene. Leo Uht played the leading role of Gramp Strong. Wilfred Tumbusch, Edward Hempel- man, Richard Smith, Alex Rudzienski and John Barstow had the other male roles. Louis Muth, Thomas McGarry, Paul Amann, Robert Deis, and Charles Deger gave good interpretations of the feminine characters in the play. Page 40 Spiritual Activities The Spiritual Activities of the school during the past year were under the enthusiastic and capable direction of Father Thomas Bodie, the school chaplain. School was opened with a Mass in honor of the Holy Ghost at Emmanuel Church, and was followed early in October by a three-day retreat preached by Father Walter Tredtin, Presi- dent of the University of Dayton. During the retreat, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Frank A. Thill spoke in behalf of the Catholic Students' Mission Crusade. Each class was organized into a C. S. M. C. unit, dues were collected and subscriptions secured to the Shield, Round Table discussions were started and meetings were held every other week throughout the year. Paladin honors were conferred upon several students for outstanding work done for the missions. An old clothes drive, sponsored by the C. S. M. C., netted four truck loads of clothing for distribution among the needy. At Christmas time over fifty bushel baskets of food were col- lected by the students and distributed to families in the city. Some two thousand books were secured in a book drive held for the missions. Stamps and tinfoil were gathered and the proceeds contributed to the missions. The Junior A stamp club, under the direction of Bro. Lawrence Eveslage, held a sale of foreign stamps for the benefit of the missions. Communication was established with missionaries in China, Japan, India, and other countries by the various units which had adopted certain countries in their prayers, study and good works. Rev. Thomas Bodie, S. M. Religious services were held on the feast of the Immaculate Conception and on the first day of May, with talks by student speakers and inspiring sermons by the chaplain. The seniors concluded the year with a one-day retreat at the end of the month of May. . Page 41 1. Student retreat, October 2, 3, 4. - 2. Homer Osborn with the C. M. S. C. shield he carved. - 3 85 4. Page 42 Catholic Action Under the enthusiastic direction of Bro. John Thomas, thirty seniors gave their whole-hearted cooperation in the many projects undertaken by the Catholic Action Club during the past year. The cataloging of the books by Catholic authors in the Day- ton Public Library was completed, and the final list containing about 1,500 titles was published in a seventy-page pamphlet and sold to those interested. Sixteen hundred copies of the American', magazine were bought by the students during the year. Over 2,500 old issues of Catholic magazines and newspapers were distributed in the Catholic hospitals, in the bus and railway stations, on the street cars and in the conservation camps in Tennessee. Early in the year the Press Department conducted a Catho- lic Press Survey, the results of which revealed many interesting and useful facts. It was found that among the 1,200 families reached in the survey, for every one cent spent for Catholic l papers, nine cents was spent for the secular papers. Only one family out of every three was receiving a Catholic paper. Bm' John Thomas' S'M' During February, Catholic Press Month, the students wit- nessed a mammoth Press Display of approximately two-thirds of the Catholic newspapers and pe- riodicals published in the United States. The display, which was on exhibition a week at Chamin- ade and a week at Julienne, received wide publicity through the N. C. W. C. News Service and a picture of the display was sent to its ninety-odd subscribers throughout the United States. Home missions as well as the foreign missions were thought of in a very practical way. Through the Catholic Information Society, modeled on the Na1'berth Plan, Catholic papers and letters con- taining information of the Catholic Faith were mailed to some seventy-five non-Catholics. The officers of the Catholic Action Club for the past year were: Daniel Hobbs, Chairman, Alex Rudzienski, Vice-Chairman, Richard Hempelman, Secretary-Treasurer, Wendell Grigsby, Press Secretary, Charles Gerwels, Secretary of the Department of Catholic Literature, and Walter Steph- ans, Secretary of Department of Apologetics.
