That statement penned by the greatest sports- writer of all-time, Grantland Rice, exemplifies the basketball season at CHS this year. The 1955 basket- ball squad was one of the most improved squads in the state as they came from last place the year before to the quarter-finals of the Southwest Xvashington district tournament this year. Not only was this one of the finest teams record-wise at CHS in the past few years but it also provided their ardent folowers land there were manyp with plenty of thrills. Biggest thrills of the season came when the Tigers knocked over three of the top teams in the state, two of which ended up in the state tournament. just be- fore the league season started, the Tigers knocked over the powerful Vancouver Trappers by a 66-53 count and then on the first league game, one week later, they upset the Aberdeen Bobcats 57-46. Both the Trappers and the Bobcats participated in the state tournament with Aberdeen coming in in Sth place. The third and probably the biggest upset of the year came in the district tournament when the Tigers eliminated the Hoquiam Grizzlies, a team that had been ranked number one in the state press poll throughout most of the season, from further tourna- ment action by a score of 49-43. Playing in the newly organized Capitol league, the Tigers started out with a big bang and walked off with 3 victories in their first 4 starts. After that the casaba squad hit the skids and lost their next six games, but when the playoff game came for the at-large berth in the district tournament, it was the early season Tiger that met the Eagle from Elma. The Tigers easily walked away from the Eagles by a score of 52-38 as the looked like the team that had won 9 Ollt 10 at the beginning of the season. Upon completion of the season, two Tigers were singled out for all Capitol league honors. Ray Kinnaman, 6'5 center. was a unanimous choice for the first team while Les Reynoldson, hustllng junior guard and forward received second team award. The Yellowjackets got off to a nice start this season, executing two straight wins over Longview. However, lady luck must have turned her head tem- porarily as HOLILITHIII came through with a close win of 34-31. The Ycllowjackets won the next four games by a comfortable margin except for a close 42-40 win over Olympia. Aberdeen broke the winning steak ol the Yellow- jackets by trouncing them here February 11. The boys displayed their stinging power with a strong come-back February 19, out-distancing the Aberdeen Bobkittens by twenty points. The season was well- rounded by a win over Shelton. High scorer for the season was Ray Siemers with 103 points. Clarence Foote was next with ninety-seven POIHIS. All in all, the Yellowjackets had a successful season, winning eight and losing two.
