One Hundred Years of Progress This is the one hundredth year of the NVash- ington Territory. Few people realize the fact that our school system is less than one hundred years old. The first school in our system was the Alder Street School shown in the above picture. VVe are not certain of the exact year in which it was built but the picture was taken in 1880. It was a small wooden frame building with very few rooms. The building without walls to the left, was used as a playshed. Today Centralia has one of the most mod- ern schools in the state. It is the new NVashing- ton School located on South Field Street. It has large well lighted classrooms which are central- ly heated. One of the most prominant features of the school is the gymnasium which is used for everything from P.E. classes to square dances. Besides the Wlashington School we now have seven other grade schools, a high school and the Hrst Junior College in the state. Transportation for getting to and from school has also been greatly changed. In the Old days the students had to furnish their own transpora tation. This meant they either had to walk or ride horses. Today we have school buses that pick up the students that live lar from school. Also many of the students have their own cars which they drive to school. Wie are very proud of our state and its schools and we hope they will continue to improve in the next one hundred years. Page 4
