Ably coached by Fred Yeager and Bob Reeves, the Hornets stung all the opponents except Purcell, Portsmouth and YVithrow. Lack of space doesn't permit a full description of each contest but a few highlights deserve mentioning. It took a blocked punt and a recovery for a touch down to pull the Roger Bacon game out of the Hre. Being up and playing rough football were some of the aspects of the Hughes game in which the Hornets won 47 to 0. VVestern Hills again put up a hard fought contest but fell to ia 12 to 7 score. Again the XVithrow Tigers beat the hard fighting Hornet team for the City Championship. This time to a score of 41 to 7. The lone Central score came when Ed Potter returned a kick off 87 yards. Coach Carl Dutch Schmidt worked hard but every time the Hornets got hot the other team was hotter. The lone win was over YV00dWard, Friday 13. Friday 13 might be an unlucky day for most people but not for the Hornets. They outscored the Bulldogs 51 to 38. The Hornets were never below 40 points all year but the opponents just seemed to stay a little ahead. Captain VVelton jones Smith Cole , Wilks RESERVE BASKETBALL Coach Toney,' Chiodiis reserve basketball team won 7 and lost 8. V BASEBALL TEAM Bottom row: Hedges, Fathergill, Pyles, Peterson, Tudor, Vtfalker. Middle row: Armor, Mack, Peters, Steidle, Gibbons, Ieffers. Top row: Starkey, Payton, Hartzell. VARSITY BASEBALL Toney Chiodi, who is coaching varsity baseball for the first time, has a well-balanced club. So far this year his charges have won 5 and lost 3. All three losses were league games. The XVestern Hills game needs special mentioning because the Maroons barely pulled the game out of the fire. The Hornets led 4 to 2 in the last inning but made two errors and lost the game. This is an account of that inning. Olsen started the last inning for Wfestern Hills by striking out. Roehrvvein and Schinder walked. Beiler hit an infield Hy and was automatically out, but Dumler, C6Ht1'3l,S second baseman dropped the ball, picking it up he threw it to Garnett to force Schinder at second. The umpire called the runner out at second and the batter safe at Hrst. Upon leaving the field, Paul Nora, VVestern's coach, sent Schinder back to second. The umpire reversed his decision, leaving WVestern with men on third and second. Heckmen, the next batter, hit a hard single through the box and as Coriell, Central's center fielder, started to field the ball it bounced over his shoulder for a home run. The final score, NVestern Hills 5, Central 4. The Hornets, record follows: ' Central 7 Norwood .... . . 5 Central 4 Western Hills ..... 5 Central 8 Purcell ....... . . 6 Central 17 Norwood ..... . . . 0 Central 5 XValnut Hills ..... 8 Central 14 Hughes .......... 3 Central 0 XVithr0w ......... 4 Central 13 VValnut Hills ..... 4 The reserve baseball team of C.V.H.S. is one of the best defensive clubs coach Fred Yeager has seen in a long time. They lack the hitting ability but coach believes that it will improve as the years pass. Their record follows: Central 2 Hughes .. 3 Central 3 WVestern Hills 10 Central 7 Withrow .. .. 6 Central 2 VValnut Hills 0 VARSITY TRACK TEAM Top row: VVilks, Jones, Smith. Bottom row: Hibbett, Miller. TRACK Our prospects of a strong team this year were shot when seven of our best men from last year's team either quit school or let outside interests keep them from getting into proper condition. With only iifteen boys to work with, our coaches had to try to make experienced men out of beginners. With only George jones, 8803 Charles Cole, mileg Edward Potter, low hurdles and mile relayg Julius VVilks, mileg and Sammy Miller, low hurdles and mile relayg from last year's squad to start with, our team finished low in the Springfield, Mans- field, City and Triangular Meets. The coaches and boys are working hard for the District and K of C Meets. George Ewring and Melvin Hibbett have improved enough to win a regular job. Herman Blankenship, Ralph Carpenter and Kenneth Showers are doing nicely in the pole vault, with Clarence Leatherwood, our only shot and discus man, doing very well also, considering this is his first year. Timothy Kelly, Chris jacobson. Norman Johnston and Elmer Smith Hlled in the vacant spots. I The Junior squad was shot and discus heavy with only five boys in track and six out of the seven field 1nen being shot and discus. Kenneth Wlright, SSO, David Tucker, hurdles, George Hankerson, sprintsg Bill Synch, George Howell and Roy Sweet, shot and discus, Charles Cornell, high jump, Kenneth Kloth, and Bob Sharp, track, Tom Rertemiller, john Pelzer and Phill Strapp, all Held men made up the squad. Because the annual went to print before the season was finished, we cannot put all of the track results but this is it up to date. April 8 Triangular Meet-XVestern Hills, YValnnt Hills and Central 11 Springfield Relay - Central 11th 18 Mansfield Relay - Central 24th 21 Triangular Meet-Hughes, XVestern Hills and Central 24 City Meet - Central -lth TRACK TEAM First row: Cole, jones, NVilks, Miller, Hibbett, Ewing, Potter. Second row: Jacobson, Kelly, johnson, Leatherwood, Smith, Showes Third row: Howell, Tucker, Hankerson, VVright, Sharp. Fourth row: Pelzer, Carpenter, Blankenship, Sweet, Lynch, Kloth. F ifth row: Rutemueller, Girdler, Stapp, Chastcen, Cornell. Sixth. row: Mr. Reisner, Mr. Kuehn, Canter, YVright. GOLF Coach Bob Reeves is starting his first year as Golf coach. His team members are made up of freshmen and sophomores and promise to develop into a strong team in their remaining years at Central. Because the annual has to go to press before the season was completed, their match scores could not be printed. BOWLING The varsity bowling competition was extremely close this year. The Hornets lost two games by only one pin. One to Hughes, the other to NValnut Hills. They also lost one by 3 pins and one by 6 pins. Boys receiving varsity letters are Bill Baer, Frank Brinkman, Jim Kolde, Bill Raymond, Ed Schopin and jack Shephard. Chevrons go to Dan Payson, Richard Greer and Arthur Schmaltz. Highest single game was Richard Greer with 238. Highest 3 game was also taken by Greer with 566. Highest average was Dan Payson with 160. The team was coached by Homer jones. GOLF TEAM Brown, Gaither, Holbrook, Huekler. Rouse CROSS COUNTRY The Hornet's Cross Country team came through again this year to win the City and District championship. In the eight years that Coach Art Reisner has been here, the Cross Country record is 1 State, 5 District, 5 City Championships, 1 State, 2 District and City runners-up. This year the hill runners surprised their opponents by staying together enough to win the City with ease. 'With only 3 seniors, Iones, Smith and VV elton, the burden was placed on Cole, Ewing and XVilks, all new to Cross Country and for that we feel the team did a great job in winning the District and going on to finish Sth in the state. Chasteen and Garnett alternated and did well for beginners. With only eight boys on the squad it left no problem for Coach Reisner to make a selection, but to make each one good enough to turn in a winner.
