“FOREWORD The Craftsman for i952 is designed to provide a pictorial volume for the pleasure of both faculty and students as well as for the many friends of the school. The reader will note that at the outset the school emblem is presented. Then a sky-line view of our city precedes a grouping of former buildings which housed various units of vocational education until they were merged into one unit on Iowa Avenue in 1942. This is followed by an aerial view of our new school which is being erected on a high promontory overlooking the intersection of Central Parkway and Ludlow Avenue. A departure from'custom next presents the graduates and juniors of our vocational department as to major trade fields, to be followed by the fresh- man and sophomore classes in home room groups. These underclassmen are engaged in what is known as exploratory courses. At the end of their sophomore year they select one of the major fields which they will follow in their junior and senior years. The faculty and administration are either identified with home room groups or are placed casually with the various departments. A picture, so the Chinese say, is worth a thousand words, so we have recorded the clubs, organizations and school activities through the medium of the camera so that they may distill a fragrance in your garden of memories to be enjoyed forever. Our friends, those who so faithfully have placed advertising with us through the years, play a large part in making this volume possible. We are ever mindful of their loyalty to the school. The cover design was inspired by the part the wheel has played in man's progress from the primitive to the present day. Wheels, wheels, wheels, have been the symbol of man's fight against friction and immobility. Some six centuries before the birth of Christ, Ezekiel the prophet had a vision. In his book he writes, for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. When they went, these went, and when those stood, these stood, and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. The negro spiritual catches the gleam when it says in part, Ezekiel saw the wheels, the big wheel runs by faith and the little wheel runs by the grace of God. Truly, the wheel' has been man's friend. ' 'Ne acknowledge the fine cooperation shown by all in the preparation of this annual. We wish especially to thank Mr. Howard Black, of the Black Wheel and Axle Company, for placing his airplane at our disposal in taking the aerial pictures, Mr. Homer Jones as pilot, and Mr. John Wheeler for his aerial photography. Also our hand goes to Big John for his untiring efforts in taking many of the shots appearing in this book, Mr. Howard Wesley for the retail sales of the annual, Mr. Robert Portune for his work with the seniors, Mr. Himmelmann for his counsel and proofreading, Mr. Schmidt and his staff for their help, and to all who have helped make this work possible, we are grateful. EVANS BURBANK, Faculty Sponsor
