Business Education Has Wallet-stuffing Goal Providing courses that can put a dollar in a student's pocket now, while a contribution is also being made for the educated person is a primary aim for the business education department. New electric and electronic equipment helps. The merchandising class here is utilizing closed circuit T.V. The guest lecturer re- corded his talk first period, and other classes throughout the day saw it on T.V. replay. Also, forty-five new electric typewriters and an electronic console used in secretarial ed- ucation are great aids. Judy Garibay works on the electronic printing calculator. Ray Hammack Dept. Home Economics Growing More Co-educational Among the 500 students in the nineteen home ec. courses are some sixty boys studying cooking, fam- ily living, and home furnishings. The present trend may soon result in a department serving nearly as many boys as girls. The demand, at least in part, is because of the increasing stress on vocational preparation in such fields as nursing and cafe and hotel management as well as the broadening of fam- ily living to cover physical and mental health, family budgeting, and marriage preparation. A goal for all advanced students is for them to be involved in at least one catering service project. Opportunities for such community involvement proj- ects are provided by such things as the annualffac- ulty Christmas party, student and personnel teas, the mid-year graduate dinner, the county fair, and the Carrot Carnival cooking contest. At Holtville this year Linette Lerno, Carol Jones, and Bonnie Luke won a second with their carrot empanada, and Nlarie Brokamp and Pat Conarty took a third wih a glazed carrot cake. Mary Kline Dept. Head Carol Likins Colleen Schwartz Rhonda Zdravecky 27
