U. S. Social And Literary Ideals Examined Of the sixteen one-semester courses offered by the social studies department, the newest is American Studies. Sixty juniors and sen- iors received history and English credit in this large-group, small-group, individual study program taught by Mr. Dormann and Mrs. Pittard of the English department. How history and literature influence each other, the American dream of success, social in- justice, and social conscience are some of the topics studied. American Studies fits well in a department whose policy is to provide a broad, practical exposure to the social sciences rather than the traditionally compartmentalized history- government structure. Also, the economics course found a way to provide practical ap- plication to everyday life when all the local banks made personal checking accounts available to students depositing five dollars or more.
