Science Dept. Outlaws Lab. Manual Cookbooks Every science course at Central has a labora- tory arrangement. A constant search for a new, meaningful experimentation is a goal shared by our science instructors. Now, more than ever, students are being forced to think for themselves rather than relying entirely on the old-fashioned cook book laboratory methods. ln the lab, stu- dents rediscover important principles and learn to take nature's problems and develop answers for them. Half of the entire student body is enrolled in sci- ences of different levels. Of these, approximately one hundred fifty students will take four or more courses in biological or physical science. At the other extreme, introductory physical science and sophomore biology are designed to provide a basic understanding and knowledge of science useful to vocational or humanities students. U. S. Social And Literary Ideals Examined Of the sixteen one-semester courses offered by the social studies department, the newest is American Studies. Sixty juniors and sen- iors received history and English credit in this large-group, small-group, individual study program taught by Mr. Dormann and Mrs. Pittard of the English department. How history and literature influence each other, the American dream of success, social in- justice, and social conscience are some of the topics studied. American Studies fits well in a department whose policy is to provide a broad, practical exposure to the social sciences rather than the traditionally compartmentalized history- government structure. Also, the economics course found a way to provide practical ap- plication to everyday life when all the local banks made personal checking accounts available to students depositing five dollars or more. Head Ralph Benson Roy Jucknath Sam Sharp Jay Topper David Watson 20 John Dormann Marilyn Hartzog John Hasandras Mark Isaacson Susan Kreider Richard Young Roberta Kinion works on her research subject, racial segre- gation.
