The institution now known as Central State University origl
noted with an act passed by the Ohio General Assembly
on March 19, 1887, establishing a Combined Normal and
Industrial Department at Wilberforce University which had
been founded before the Civil War. Although associated
with Wilberforce University, the Department was consicl
ered a separate institution with its own Board of Trustees.
ln 1941, the General Assembly expanded the Combined
Normal and Industrial Department, which offered two-
year courses, into the College of Education and Industrial
Arts, which provided four-year college programs.
In 1947, the College of Education and Industrial Arts be
gan operating independently from Wilberforce University.
lt continued its programs in teacher education, industrial
arts and business, and also began offering a four-year
llberal arts program under the name Wilberforce State
College. In 1951, the legislature provided the name Cen
tral State College and in November, 1965, Central State
was granted university status.

From a slngle brick bulldlng erected In 1890, the
Central State campus had grown to a total of 42
structures ln 1974. Wlthin a few seconds on April 3 ot
that year more than half ofthe Unlversity's facllltles
were wlped out as a tornado struck the campus
and nearby communltles. Sixteen bulldlngs were rav-
aged beyond repair, and others whlch wlthstood
the storm requlred extensive rennovation. Students
were sent home whlle emergency repairs were
made, and In spite of a short "recess"the Class of
1974 was graduated on schedule.

ln June, 1974, ground was broken for a new gymna-
slum, the flrst proiect of what was to be a S22 mllllon
rebulldlng program on the 60-acre maln campus.
Other projects in the rebuilding include the Admlnls-
tration Building, the Community Health Center, the
Paul Robeson Cultural and Performlng Arts Center,
the GaIlowayfAlumnl Tower, and the Presldent's Resl
