The free public schools supply the media by which this training for citizenship is accomplished. Thomas Jefferson said The Public School's reason for being is to teach citizenship . A mere memorization of historical facts is not sufficient to achieve good citizenship. A good citizen must act as well as knowand think. studentsf Training for citizenship cannot be citizen- delegated to a single department. T ship training must be a part of the daily routine in each department and each teacher must have a part in citizenship training. A good citizen- ship program teaches respect for responsibility and the individual's acceptance o such respon- sibility. !
