Central, '44, 3 School llaze ol I953-54 by Gloria Kruse and Jean Subo This has been a wonderful year as Central started her second century of training high school students in St. Louis for citizenship in the community and the nation. The events and activities of the year have been different from those of last year's Centennial turmoil, but all around us we have noticed that happy daze which comes to you only when you are a senior in a high school such as Central. When school opened on September 8, l953, we found that two members of the faculty, Mr. Beezley and Mrs. Ward, had gone to other schools, but that a big brave driving teacher had come to take their place lMr. Thuet, this means YOl1iXl. Our enrollment of a little over one JEAN SABO. All - Sports Queen thousand students included over two hundred freshies. September was filled with bright bubbles and practically no troubles. Classes and clubs got off to a good start and, report cards were still in the distant future. The Seniors looked forward to a wonderful term. They chose Ron Schnur as their presi- dent, Kathy Sandcork as vice-president, Joan McClellan as secretary, and Bill Davis as treas- urer. The New-Seniors also elected oficers. Those elected were Don Meyer, president: Joan Allen, vice-president: Virginia Svoboda, secretary, and Gary Couch, treasurer. The New Seniors held their outing at Trout Lodge on September 27th. Miss Giles and Mr. Carlisle are their sponsors. The Student Council officers were chosen as follows: President, Celeste Morales: Vice-Presi- dent, Max Tarpley: Secretary, Ciloria Kruse: Treasurer, Clyston Severs, and Sgt,-at-Arms, Eugene Brunk. The chief event for the Seniors in October was Color Day. There were 49 members on the stage of the auditorium, as the Red E5 Black colors were passed on to Ron Schnur, by Shirley Kilgore. member of the June, 1953, Centennial Class, The first issue of THE NEXVS came out on October 9th. On October 14th seventeen Central students entered the try-outs in the Voice of Democracy Contest. Richard Smith was the Central winner for the second straight year. Mr. Alexander accepted the award which was given to the school for its hundred years of education- al service. 'AEducation-Labor-Business'' Day was cele- brated at Central' on Tuesday, November I7. with an auditorium session and a luncheon in honor of our guests, who included about twenty prominent leaders in business and labor organ- izations, They made many favorable comments about the school. On December 4, the Lettermen's Club held its annual dance and selected an All-Sports Queen. The lucky girl was Jean Sabo. The other candidates were Joan Allen, Barbara Bell. Mary Jane DePauli, Pat Forsythe, Carol Hearst On the New York Trip Goodman, Bonnie Jones, Mary Marschlewski, Celeste Morales, Kathy Sandcork and Virginia Svoboda. In December the Choir and the Caroling group were kept very busy singing at hotels, parties and also in the Globe-Democrat Christ- mas Pageant at Kiel Auditorium. The chief events in January were the Senior Prom at Hotel De Soto on January 22nd and the Graduation Exercises held here at Central on January 27th. Speeches were made by Jim Williams and Ann Wright, Ron Schnur made the welcoming address and Bill Clarke was the Narrator for the illustrated story of the term. On February l a new term started and Mr. Robert Jaeger joined the Central' faculty. I43 Freshies entered Central for the first time, mak- ing the enrollment 1043. The Seniors chose their new officers: Gary Couch, president: Irene Mirth, vice-presidentg Joan Allen, secretary: Larry Couch, treasurer. The New Seniors elected Les Bushman, president: Sharon Bresely, vice- president: Barb Folwarczny. secretary, and Bill Root, treasurer. The student body elected the following Student Council officers: President. Max Tarpleyg Vice-President, Jackie Meyers: Secretary, Gloria Kruse: Treasurer, Pat Schu- macher, and Sgt.-at-Arms, Kennard Vernon. On February llth Central observed its lOlst birthday. The school News also came out on February l lth, with a special edition. The students passed to various rooms where they listened to representa- tives of different occupations. On April 4th, the Senior Outing was held at Pierre Marquette Park. Everyone had a wonder- ful time, including Doug Cremeens, who had had an unfortunate accident and was forced to buy safety pins from Bob Winter. On April' 22nd four Central students from the Radio class discussed the newly passed Cur- few Law on Junior Town Meeting. In April thirteen of Central's students took a full week off for a trip to Washington, D. C. and New York City. In Washington they vis- ited the Capitol, the White House, the Washing- ton Monument and other famous buildings. In New York they visited the U. N. Building, Radio Center and numerous other centers of in- terest. They also took a cruise around Man- hattan Island and the Statue of Liberty. The lucky thirteen were Treasa Maloney, Joyce Onions, Chester Dorsey, Peggy Steward, Marian Brewer, Robert Landrum, Dorotha Shelton, Mary Price, Barbara West, Frances Jones, Jim Wagner. Bill Schulze and Herman Pendleton. On May 5th the Toastmistress and Toast- masters held their joint meeting in B-7. pre- ceeded by a luncheon. On May 7th the Seniors had their Color Day. The girls were seen in their traditional white dresses and the boys in their new suits. Enough pictures were taken to make a movie. Field Day was held at Public School Stadium on May 28. On June 6 the Seniors had another outing, This time at Trout Lodge. They were sorry to see such a good time end. On June 16th, 118 Seniors will walk regret- fully and yet happily down the aisle at Beau- mont High School to receive their diplomas from Mr, Alexander. School closes for the year on June l8. Our guidance program may be identified by three phases: Orientation. Educational Guidance, and Voca- tional Guidance. Included in all of these is also the fac- tor of Personal Guidance. The elementary teacher, the high school teacher, the group adviser, the counselor. and the administrator must all work together to success- fully fullill the aims of any guidance program. In the Central High plan, the school principal and as- sistant principal serve as the directors. They appoint a guidance committee of teachers. who have been certified as counselors by the Missouri State Department of Edu- cation, During the school year 1953-54, Mr. Russell W. Hibbert has served as chairman of the guidance com- mittee and as counselor for the pupils of Sophomore and Junior groups. Mr. Leighton Martyr has served as Freshman counselor, Mr, Max Carlisle as Senior counselor, and Miss Ruth Colestock as testing counselor. Much of the orientation guidance has been done in the Freshman year. It starts when the high school counselor visits the elementary school to interest the eighth grade pupils in a high school education, The selection of high school subjects most suited to a pupil's needs embraces the scope of Educational Guidance. Most Educational Guidance is done by the teacher-ad- at Central visers, some through the administrative staff of the school, and some through the counselors. Many individual pupils call at the guidance oiiice for personal counseling, and each term an increasing number of pupils are referred to the counselor by his advisor, Group guidance, as well as individual counseling helps to make a better informed pupil. At Central the group guidance program has included Auditorium programs, Guest Speakers, Visual Aids, Career Clubs, Multiple Counseling, Career Day, and field trips. Vocational Guidance helps a pupil prepare to better meet the problems he must solve when he becomes a high school graduate. Counselors spend considerable time in helping pupils make their vocational choice during the time they are school citizens. Much of this individual counseling is based on the results of Standardized Tests inter- preted by the counselor. Placement service is a part of the total program of Guidance services. At Central many pupils are placed in jobs selected to meet their interests, needs, and capabilities. Placements in commercial work are cared for by Mr. Ralph Kirn, those in Industrial Arts by Mr. Jesse Vertrees, and those in Distributive Education by Mr. E. E. Chapman. The Guidance and Counseling Service at Central en- deavors to provide a well rounded program including both Group guidance and Individual Counseling, and to agree with the author who says, Group Guidance plus in- dividual counseling produces better results than either alone. Around forty Central' High students are seen leaving the school soon after lunchtime each day. Are they skipping? you might ask. No. At least, most of them aren't. Their programs are arranged so that they can get to work early in the afternoon. These students are the Co-ops, enrolled in our two part-time work-experience programs, Distributive Education and Secretarial Practice. The Co-ops attend regular classes where they study about the work they are doing in the afternoon. UentraI's Cu-lip Program cedures during their eighth term. While doing this, they are attending school in the morning, and getting practical on-the-job experience in the afternoon. During the last year the girls have received their training in such businesses as insurance, finance, wholesale paper, newspaper, fuse and electrical manufacturing, as well as at several elementary schools. Co-ops in Secretarial Practice and Distribu- tive Education earn a credit for their class work and a credit for their successful work experience. The employers grade their work for each report Secretarial Co-ops Distributive Education students study about the distribution of goods: that is, the buying and selling of merchandise, with all the prob- lems connected with that activity. They learn about the problems of both the employees and the management of stores. Each Distributive Education student learns and earns on the job, by working at least l5 hours a week in a store. Jobs range from stock work to selling, in such places as grocery stores, department stores, va- riety stores, drug stores, and others. Some 20 Central students have been in the D. E. program during the past term, having started as New Seniors. Secretarial Practice Co-ops finish their training in typing, shorthand and office pro- card period, by means of a rating sheet, for characteristics like Ability to get along with others, Initiative, Punctuality and Attend- ance, and i'Suitability to the job . The teacher-coordinators, Mr. Chapman and lVlr. Kirn, visit the students' training stations regularly, to observe them on the job and to confer with the employers about the training programs. Employers like to take our selected Central students for training, because they progress faster on the job, and are ready to take over full-time jobs when they graduate. llur Anti - Jaywalking Pr Last autumn, when the city of St. Louis launched an anti-jaywalking campaign as a phase of their major traffic control plan, the public schools were invited to cooperate, Since Central High School lies along a very busy thor- oughfare, which most of our pupils must cross on their way to school, an anti-jaywalking cam- paign seemed a very practical and worthwhile project, It seemed an opportune time to try to establish in our student body a consciousness of the need for pedestrian cooperation to overcome the traffic hazards in our school community. This project fitted in very nicely with the work of the American Problems classes, which had just completed the topic of Propaganda and the Devices for Influencing Public Opinion . Both classes decided to test their skill in the use of these devices in an Anti-jaywalking Cam- paign. They drew up lists of things they needed to know before launching the campaign. Pupils at once volunteered to gather the information. Prom then on to the end of the project, time was given at the beginning of every class period to any committee of pupils which wished to report its progress or ask the class for advice or authority to pursue an activity. In this way pupils learned responsibility for group action. inject One small group of students visited the Traf- Hc Division in the City Hall to get a copy of the Traffic Code and learn the provisions of the ordinance on jaywalking. Another group visited the Police Station in our community to talk over our project with the Police and ask their cooperation. The next matter to be considered by the classes was the diffusion of information to others. Ways and means for informing the whole school' were decided upon. Every pupil agreed to advertise the project by speaking to at least ten other pupils not engaged in the project. The classes also selected the propaganda devices to be used, and grouped themselves into com- mittees, each committee assuming the responsi- bility of using one of these devices. So they made up slogans and posters picturing the pos- sible consequences of jaywalking, The slogan, The life you save may be your own, figured prominently in the posters. The Principal and student leaders were interviewed for statements on the value and need of an Anti-jaywalking Campaign. These testimonials appeared in the daily bulletins and in the school newspaper. Playing upon the desire of every school child to belong to a club, a committee decided to or- llur ganize an anti-jaywalking club in every advis- ory group. When the members of the advisory group signed a pledge promising to obey the traffic rules, they were presented with tags to wear as a sign of their cooperation. A roving class photographer snapped pictures of pupils caught in the act of jaywalking. These pictures and posters, exhibited in the corridors, aroused much interest and merriment. Anti - .laywalking Project As a result of this campaign, not only has jaywalking been reduced, but the students en- gaged in it received valuable, first hand experi- ence with a phase of American citizenship - that is, dealing with a hazardous traffic prob- lem, This practice also had democratic values. lt impressed upon the pupils the social and poli- tical responsibilities of the individual to his community. Umm Allied Youth, llentral's Largest Ulull Allied Youth is a teen-age organization to help young people learn the facts about alcohol and face the social pressures of drinking. lt was organized in the early l93O's by Dr. Daniel A. Poling and a group of other national leaders who felt a new approach to alcoholism was in need. Allied Youth is non-political. It welcomes all young people regardless of their faith. lt sets no scholastic, economic or social standard for membership. The only requirement for membership is that you are in the age range of I4-30 years and interested in the objectives of Allied Youth, which are: l. Teach the facts about alcohol: Z. Establish an alcohol-free fellowship of young people: 3. Conduct programs of character educa- tion, teaching individual responsibilities to the community and societyg 4. Strengthen personalities among young people: Officers and Sponsors of Allied Youth 5. Help community understand its alcohol problem. All members are inducted using the induction ceremony. During the induction ceremony the symbols, which make up the Allied Youth em- blem, are presented to its Post officers. The symbols are: The Torch-Stands for enlightment, which lights the path by means of proper and correct educational facts. The Shield-Stands for vigilance to guard us against the enemies of youth. The WreathffStands for victory. sets for us a goal towards which we constantly strive. The Golden Cord-Stands for unity of effort in a common cause for the welfare of society. All members make an oral statement, during the ceremony, explaining his purpose in joining. saying: My purpose in joining Allied Youth is to seek the truth concerning beverage alcohol and the best way of life in relation to this problem. Allied Youth is mostly organized in high schools and colleges rather than churches and communities. It is co-educational while many other character building organizations aren't. Allied Youth is one of the most popular clubs at Central as well as all over the United States. Allied Youth reaches out as far as Hawaii and Canada. She is an earnest student of superior abil- ity and artistic talent, winning several prizes with her paintings and posters. We are fortunate to have a photograph showing her native cos- tume, and another displaying one of her unusual paintings. In the following letter Grozdana tells some of her experiences and impressions. Dear Editor: It is a pleasure to answer your question concerning my impression of America and Central High School. From the story of my father, who lived in the U. S. A. for twenty years, this country became my dream. It didn't take too long, and my dream became a fact. When I arrived in the U. S. A. in 1951, it gave me impressions hard to express. New York was a very large city, and the people and society were strange and different to me. I had lots me ww mum of diliculty because I didn't know English at all, and my three brothers and I did not have any place to live. It didn't take us too long to Hnd a way out because we found jobs. Several church organizations tried to help us, and a teacher was even sent to teach us English at home. We were working and studying, too, and soon made enough progress to become a part of American society. We are proud and glad that we have a chance to live in the twen- tieth century in the great country of the U. S. A. My ambition is to pass through school and col- lege. All I can say about the school is that the relationship between the boys and girls and the teachers is really good and modern. The prin- cipal and teachers are friendly and willing to help the students wherever they can. ROST Asszistanl Prirzcipul l MISS MARY BIRTLEY The year l954 has become a very important year in the history of education because of the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court concerning segregation in the schools. This action will change the practice of lip service democracy in our schools to a real live democracy in the very near future. I personally believe that our Central High School student body is ready and most willing to adjust to an integrated school. The responsibility for making a smooth transition from a segregated school to a non- segregated school lies with the parents as well as the pupils now enrolled in school. Central High School can, in this endeavor, become a model for other schools. Otto P. Rosz The Ilauult E. VJ. ALEXANDER Row l. Miss Giles. Miss Sclmrocslrr. Miss llmks. Miss Kramer. Mrs. Finley. Using the remaining regu- lars that he had and working with mid-termers, Brad -as he is called by the team-gave every player a chance to gain experience from a high school game, thereby preparing for the sea- sons ahead. Of the fourteen league games played by the Redwings, our team won two while losing twelve. ln the first five games, Central lost to Soldan-Blewett, Roosevelt, Hadley, Cleveland and McKinley. But then the Redwings came back to defeat Beaumont C4 to 35 in a closely contested game. The next two games were lost to Southwest and Roosevelt, only for the team to overwhelm Soldan-Blewett C11 to 21 in a one-sided slugfest. But still, the season ended with Cleveland, Hadley, McKinley, Beaumont and Southwest, winning in that order. In our only State Game, St. Louis University High won by the score of twelve to six. Lettermen for the year were: L. Bushmann, T, Carroll, J. Goudy, D. Kahre, R. Mathews, A, Moser, R. Schnur, E. O'Connor, F. Pisciotta, R. Ritz, W. Root, H. Spink and R. Burling, Manager. TRACK 1953 The 1953 Track Team had a very successful season, winding up in third place in the Inter- scholastic Meet behind Roosevelt and Beaumont. In the District Meet the Juniors took seventh place and the Seniors took eighth place. In the Maplewood Relays, Vernon Reed tied for first place in the pole vault and Max Tarpley took fourth in the mile. The team won most of its dual meets, winning notable victories over Cleveland, McKinley, Southwest and Soldan- Blewett. Joe Crowe was high point man for the Juniors, scoring consistently in the 100, 220 Athletics and broad jump. Brunk scored in the broad jump and 880. Other good performers were Newmann in the low hurdles, Rimini in the 880, Dave Reed in the high jump, Ryan in the shot put, Skelly in the high jump, and Tomp- kins in the 100 and 220. The Seniors also had several real' stars. Vernon Reed usually won the pole vault and broad jump. Max Tarpley usu- ally took the mile and half mile, Harry Lemke scored in the high and low hurdles. In one meet Gary Couch took hrst in the four dashes and second in the high jump. Among the other Senior point winners were Choate in the hurdles, Rios in the 880 and Davidson in the hurdles and pole vault. TENNIS 1953 There can be no mention of Centralws Tennis Team without first speaking of its star and nucleus, Al Holtman. Al, an outstanding stu- dent as well as a great tennis player, has over a period of three years, twenty-One victories without a defeat - this is, of course, in league play. In that time he has captured the State High School Singles Championship three times running. And he still has one more season ahead. Last year he joined Hal McKeever, another fine Central player, in the Country Day Tourn- ament. They were able to pile up enough points to bring back the Tournament Trophy, though they only went as far as the semi-finals. Al' brought the singles cup back also. Unfortunately, Central has its same disease un the Tennis squad. We have a small team that needs more players, especially if we expect to win a couple of league championships. Of course, if you do not think that this sport offers enough challenge, why not go out for the team and find out. lf you expect to be any good you'll have to have strength, balance and perfect timing. Come on out and see if you have the stuff that it takes. Holtman and McKeever were the only letter- men. Athletics FOOTBALL 195 3 The 1953 Football Season saw Central mak- ing its most impressive showing of recent years, and saw several of our players earning the honor of being chosen for the All-District and the All'- Public League teams. In each game our Redwings battled until the last second of the clock ran out, but still they were unable to win a game out of the six played in the league, and were only able to tie two. In the first game, our Varsity fought McKin- ley, the 1952 League Champion, to a CO-OD checkmate. A strong Beaumont team defeated Central C14-Oj in the second game, and South- west, the strongest team in the league, passed over Central C34-181 in a gruelling game. Soldan-Blewett fought Central to a C14-145 standstill,, and the Redwing's last two games, though sharply contested, were lost to Cleveland and Roosevelt. i Central's B team showed their strength by winning four of ten games, losing only four and tying-the other two. With some of the B team moving up to Varsity next year, chances are that we will have a good season. Varsity letters were awarded to Les Bush- mann, Joe Crowe, Wayne Cupp, Bill Clarke, Jim Daugherty, Bob Griner, Ed Gambill, Bill Davis, Elmer King, Gene Knopp, Bob Lukitsch, Art Moser, Bob Panosh, Bill Root, Norman Wanger, Ronald Schnur, Bob Winter and Dave Grewe CManagerj. B Team letters were awarded to Ernest Fields, Don Fox, Jim Gambill, Farro Giannola, Leroy Killian, Gerald Lancaster, Don Mason, Mike Moran, Bob Murdock, Alan Polley, Charles Richardson, Fred Ryan, John Smith, Bob Tompkins, George Viviano, Charles Wal- ters, Larry Randazzo, Ray Stiffler, Glynn Miller, Don Svoboda and Tim Montelione. CROSS-COUNTRY 19 5 3 Central's Redwings ran a long way last year and made some good showings. But this year, as in past years, our Cross-Country team was suffering from Central's most dreaded disease, an undermanned team. While most high schools put ten or twenty men on the Held, we had only six. The six, R. Allison, E.Brunk, R. Norvall, J. Rimini, A.Rios and M. Tarpley, all lettered. And they earned their right to those letters by refusing to give up against all odds. Our Redwings were pretty tired by the time the season ended, for they had been able to cap- ture third in the City Meet, seventh in the East Side Invitational and eighth in the State Meet. When one of our boys had an off day and did not take his usual place, we lost many points. Other schools always had somebody to fill in a vacant spot. Central did not have a good season last year, but we had a good team - a team that never forgot it represented Central. SWIMMING 1953-54 In the 1953-1954 Swimming Season, Cen- tral's 'iMermen captured third place in the City League, and tied for fourth in the State Meet. To show exactly how good our team was in the individual events of the City League, at least one of our men took either first or second place: and then in the stiff competition of the State Meet, we had two Hrst place winners. With all but a few of the boys returning next year, Coach Ray Clilfe has high hopes for just as good if not a better season in 1955. The first two City meets saw Cleveland and Beaumont swimming by our Tankmen , but Central's swimmers came back in the third meet to defeat Roosevelt C61-265. In the last three meets, the Central' Mermen scored continually to overcome Soldan-Blewett C62-143, then Hadley C42-351 and, finally, McKinley Q68- 9l. The two extra meets against St. Louis U. I-Iigh, our Mermen won by the scores 41 to 36, and 43 to 34. Those receiving Varsity Letters were: R. Davidson, J. Hogue, C. Morgan, L. Smith, L. Bushman, W. Cupp, H. Bittick, J. Bittick, D. Mana, J. Wolfe, W. Freebersyser, J. Gunn and L. Killian. Athletiv' 1053 BfXSI.lBAI,I, TIQAIVI Coach: Mr, Bradburn Huw I: .I Cwugiv. II. Iluol, R. Rxtz. II. XInlI1cx'.w I' Pisciulln, L, O'l,unnur, A. WMF Athletics BASKETBALL 195 3-54 As the final buzzer rang the end to the 1953- 54 Basketball Season, Central had a pretty de- jected l'Bunch of players for a varsity team. The Varsity Redwings felt that they had let their Alma Mater and their school mates down by not winning a game out of the seven played. But then, too, maybe we let our team down. When they went out onto the court, there were only a few Ca very fewl friendly faces to be seen in the stands to cheer them on. There was no one out there to give them that added cour- age and zest, so necessary to win. An excited yell might have helped the Redwings when they were putting on a sudden spurt that could have been a winning score. I don't think we have our team to blame for their bad showing, nor was it Coach Carlisle's fault. We, the student body, are the only ones who can give our school a winning team. The players come from us, and if we give our whole- hearted support, they'll win for us. l'Come on, Central, let's go . Special mention goes to Lajuan Kirk and Harold McCracken for their showing during the season. TRACK 1954 Although we have to go to press before the l954 Track Season is Hnished, we can include a brief account of its activities under Coach Kirn and the new Assistant Coach, Mr. Thuet. The team won three of its first six meets. Cuene Pill- man tied for third in the pole vault in the very tough District Meet. In the middle of the sea- son the team was given a very hard blow by the injury of our star mile runner, Max Tarpley. The team includes about twenty-five boys, and all but six of them will be back next year. Fol- lowing are some of the members with their main events: M. Tarpley, 880 and mile: Ci.
